Centenarian still thinks of others first

Lucy Moore is a woman of few words: She lets her actions speak for her.

"She's very careful with her language and makes sure that when she speaks, it has impact," said Marion Hale, who volunteers with Ms. Moore at the United Way of the CSRA. "Otherwise, her actions demonstrate who she is -- a dedicated, hard worker. She just quietly goes about doing what she needs to do."

Ms. Moore's actions haven't gone unnoticed, however. She was recognized for her service during the United Way Kickoff in August, at which she was presented with a gift basket. In 2006, she received a plaque for her service to the organization.

"I didn't expect that," said Ms. Moore, who is 100. "I don't do it for awards or anything like that. I just like volunteering. I like helping other people."

For about 10 years, she has helped the organization, whose mission is to help others. She stuffs envelopes with the organization's communications, assists with its events and does other tasks as needed.

When she's not volunteering for United Way, Ms. Moore helps with a variety of tasks at Brandon Wilde, including assisting in its shop, helping with vespers and folding the retirement community's newsletter.

In the past, she has volunteered at the Master's Table Soup Kitchen and Golden Harvest Food Bank.

"I've always wanted to help others," she said. "I do it because it's fun. I don't do it to stay busy."

Ms. Moore is also an inspiration to other volunteers, Ms. Hale said.

"Anyone who has volunteered with her knows what a joy it is to be with her," she said. "Not only is she a great volunteer, she's an excellent friend to everyone. She's a great role model for us."
