Raid on gang house nets weapons, drugs

  • Follow Metro

Richmond County sheriff's investigators say they believe a Wednesday morning raid on an abandoned Augusta home has yielded the weapon in the fatal shooting of 23-year-old Jezreel Hammond.

Members of the sheriff's gang task force descended upon the Luckey Street home, which sits within the territory claimed by the Sunset gang, on a tip they received while working that investigation, sheriff's Lt. Scott Peebles said.

They think the gang was using the home as a "trap house," or a storage facility, for their weapons and drugs, according to Lt. Peebles.

"We've got ideas about who this stuff is going to be linked to and we're going to verify that through forensics," he said.

By late morning, deputies could be seen carrying suitcases and paper bags filled with cocaine, marijuana, ecstasy and ammunition from the home. Two assault rifles, a shotgun and three handguns also were seized.

Lt. Peebles said his office had received information while working Mr. Hammond's slaying case that members of the gang were hiding their guns and drugs on Luckey Street, which is off 15th Street near the now-closed Castleberry plant.

It wasn't until recently, however, that police were able to connect it to the home that was raided Wednesday, Lt. Peebles said.

"We weren't able to pinpoint it until we got the information today," he said.

Mr. Hammond was fatally shot last month when three men burst into his Royal Street home.

A man and two teenagers, who were arrested shortly after, are accused of shooting him a number of times as his grandmother slept in another part of the home.

Ian Gemell Bonner and Cornelius Moore, both 16, were charged with murder and armed robbery in connection with the crime. Kenneth R. Gaines, 26, was charged with armed robbery, firearm and drug charges.

Another good example of arming your home; preventing violent crime.

well as far as commissioner holland is concerned all augusta needs to do is build more parks. this will immediately reduce the gang/crime problem in augusta....HEY EVERYONE DON'T PILE UP ON ME I DIDN'T MAKE THIS IDIOTIC AND ASININE STATEMENT...HE DID AND THE SCARY PART IS HE REPRESENTS A PORTION OF AUGUSTA.

No_Longer_Amazed

jisomjr: Hopefully not much longer as he is up for re-election next year. As a District 5 resident, I guarantee he will not to get my vote this time.

Raves to the RCSD. Keep up the good work!

RBI

Well behaved murderers and armed robbers huh.....Damn, that's a first!!

WW1949

If they killed this person then hang them high. We do not need trash like that in Augusta or any where else. Good work RCSD. Keep it up.

Gang members deserve the death penalty. The only gang we want is to bring back the chain gang. Support www.hongkongaugustaga.org

savoy_savoy

I don't think SMH really thought about that comment....hopefully their "well behaved" manners, morals and values will help them in prison....

SargentMidTown

ww1949...Here, here, I agree. Please let Richmond County prosecuting attorney know how you feel. It will make a difference. Gang members are domestic terrorist. They are not much different than Al-Qaeda.

SargentMidTown

jisomjr ....Maybe commissioner Holland knows gang affiliated youth. I do not know anyone like that nor do I ever wish to know them. Maybe we need to oust commissioner Holland.

takeme2

I wonder where this tip came from? Could it have possibly been from the young men that they arrested behind the murder, and was anyone arrested during the seize yesterday?

Bobbie S.K

SMH, you are obviously as ignorant as the two animals you're defending!!! Maybe you should rot in the big house with them!!

Freedbygrace

So let me see, we found this house full of narcotics and weapons and NOONE was arrested? Maybe we need to set up a sting, a surveillance (camera or undercover officers), tracking devices in weapons/drugs, maybe we could be a little smarter than the criminal. Maybe we could just get criminals off the street, not the drugs. The drug inforcement agencies love to show large stashes of weapons and drugs-BUT NO CRIMINALS. I haven't seen a marijuana plant, a bag of coccaine or a gun in a house kill anybody yet, I still believe it's people that kill! This is not the first time for photo-ops and won't be the last until we demand more of our law enforcement agencies.

SMHwhatamessthisis

let's not judge anyone when there was a older boy with them..i heard he talked them into doing it.

SMHwhatamessthisis

Bobbie S.K. i never been to jail in my life...when i spoke i spoke about when they have been around me..they have been to skate parties with my kids pool parties etc..

SMHwhatamessthisis

Did ANYOne on here ever take English while in school? Damn sure appears not.

FallingLeaves

Drugs and gangs have been in Holland's neighborhood since at LEAST 1999. He can't say he wasn't told about it. Juvenile Court Judge Ben Allen in the same neighborhood, lives two blocks away from Holland. He can't say he wasn't told about it. I suppose Judge Allen is doing what he can in Juvenile Court, but I sure wish the community had come together at the first sign of trouble and addressed the problems THEN instead of prioritizing speed bumps and putting up and beautifying entrance ways to each of the neighborhoods over various criminal and suspicious behavior. Maybe things wouldn't be as bad as they are now. And they're spreading. I've started hearing gunshots CLOSE in the neighborhood I moved to a few years ago (to get AWAY FROM that kind of criminal mischief). One rascal was apprehended after he drove past a neighbor shooting into the air. And we're having trouble with what appears to be drug activity just starting up in a new household on my street. Ongoing problems with that on other nearby streets. These should be RARE occurrences, but they seem to be the NORM around 30906. Why???

FallingLeaves

I didn't take English, but I studied it. Wink. Hi jack.

No_Longer_Amazed

First, I would like to point out that the house was a VACANT house where apparently the guns and drugs had been stashed. The second point I would like to make is that I believe you will find that this house is in District 2, not District 5. However, "Drugs and gangs have been in Holland's neighborhood since at LEAST 1999" because I can assure you that his district, District 5, DOES HAVE a drug and gang problem.

semperfi

These teens should be charged as adults and giving the max penalty if found guilty.

FallingLeaves

I added a Holland comment only because jisomjr at 7:59pm brought him up. I've lived mostly in 30906, a couple of years on the hill and in Martinez and have friends all over the CSRA including Augusta-Richmond County and surrounding counties, so I am concerned about crime in each and every part of the CSRA. Hate to see it anywhere, don't want it and am trying to make it go away wherever I can and will report it.
