Conference at Lake Oconee cost taxpayers at least $2,600

  • Follow Metro

Just days before considering nearly $1.28 million in cuts from next year's budget, Columbia County officials spent at least $2,600 in taxpayer money on a two-day conference at a Lake Oconee resort.

The money paid for meeting rooms, coffee and soft drink services, and food during meetings held Wednesday and Thursday at the Ritz Carlton in Greensboro, Ga., according to figures from the county administrator's office.

Those figures do not include the cost of lodging or the rental of audiovisual equipment.

The county received a discounted rate of $225 a night to stay at the Ritz Carlton. An assistant in the administrator's office did not know Monday which of the 25 officials attending the meeting Wednesday or the 16 attending Thursday spent the night or paid for rooms themselves.

"We're pretty ... frugal with the taxpayers' money, and if people have a problem with that trip, then I think they've got a problem," Commissioner Tommy Mercer said.

Out-of-town trips provide a distraction-free environment for officials to discuss county business, Mr. Mercer said.

"I don't think we need to justify it, but if we did have to justify it, that's how we'd do it," he said.

The meetings included reports from division directors, updates from consultants, committee appointments and budget discussions, said county Commission Chairman Ron Cross.

The trip had been planned for more than a year, and the Ritz Carlton had already been paid a deposit, Mr. Cross said. But the trip was cut from three days to 1 1/2, and staff did not stay overnight.

Mr. Cross said he paid for his own room Tuesday evening after an informal meeting with consultants but that he charged the county for his Wednesday lodging.

Though Mr. Mercer finds value in such meetings, Mr. Cross said he thinks the commission likely will not continue the practice.

"We'd have gotten out of it this year if we'd been able to, but we'd already signed a contract before we knew we'd be losing so much money from the state," he said.

Prompted by a $1.45 million shortfall in state funding, commissioners will discuss trimming the 2008-09 county budget during a regular meeting tonight at the Evans Government Center.

Proposed cuts include nearly $360,000 from the sheriff's budget, about $190,000 from the detention center, about $71,000 from commissioners, $100,000 from information technology and more than $100,000 from management services.

The commission meeting starts at 6 p.m. and will be held in the auditorium of the government complex at 630 Ronald Reagan Drive.

As It Is

If commisoner Tommy Mercer responded as reported he needs to take his arrogance elsewhere. If county officials aren't able to find ways to meet within our own county without being bothered then maybe they aren't suited for the job. Furthermore, if they must conduct business elsewhere, they need not choose a 5 star resort facility with those kind of rates. If Mr. Mercer considers the Ritz Carlton a frugile expense and sees no need in justifying the actions of the commissoners or others using tax payer money then he is in the wrong business. Cut law enforcement from the Sheriff's Office but spend $250.00 per night on 5 star hotel rooms and rent projectors and conference space, etc. costing over $2,600.00. How about just go to one of the excellent Columbia County schools on a Saturday when they are closed and use the equipment, conference rooms, etc. already paid for by tax payers and purchase some .50 cent cokes from Krogers vs. the $4.00 per coke + 18% gratuity from the Ritz Carlton. As for Mr. Cross' statement it appears it is ok to waste tax payer money as long as funds are coming from the state. Is this a REPUBILCAN CONSERVATIVE commission? No wonder we are loosing voters.

Did Tommy Mercer get his political training... from the Richmond County Commissioners?

I agree with the previous comments from "As it is"!

Ladies and Gentlemen Officials of Columbia County, you are fortunate to learn from the circus-like atmosphere that is Augusta politics. Do you really have to embarrass yourselves with idiotic reasoning?

Regardless of red or black ink, use facilities in your own county! Why couldn't a local business cater your meetings? Does the mere thought of sleeping on sheets with a higher thread count than your own zip code stimulate your brains to comprehensive excellence?

Get your hands out of the cookie jar and get fiscally conservative!

Mr. Mercer, you owe the taxpayers a sincere apology. If you think not, the taxpayers owe you the door.

Mercer is a member of Ron "Double" Cross's Band of Bandits. I'm one of those that just has a problem according to Mercer, who does he think he is? Columbia County will be much better off when these bandits are no longer in power.

Why could they not get one of the rooms at the Mariott here in town? I tell you why because the money was free, it was not theirs, they didn't work for it. That's what you do in poloitics. The American Way, take from the mass's & spend it on the few, the proud, the ones that put themselves above the tax payers. The Poloticians. Pres. Elect Obama said he was going to stop spending like this on the higher end of government. I for one think he will. Our white poloticians have never stoped it, that why senators serve only 8 years in the senate & retire will 100% of their salary for life. Oh that includes full medical to. Oh did I forget to say they don't pay income tax on their salary? Obama may clean some of this up, but I bet you he does not take that 8 year retirement away. God that must be nice, only 8 years & full pay retirement.

Stop voting these losers in. This is not all the spending they do. What about their catered lunches before some commission meetings at about 65 a head. Ridiculous.

sick of taxes

I agree with ALL of the comments above. These clowns are NOT conservative Republicans. They are RHINOS. The only way to get elected in Columbia County is to LIE and call yourself a REPUBLICAN. They ALL need to get kicked out of office ASAP. Columbia County is killing their citizens with stupid spending. Things like the Aquatic Center etc. GIVE US A BREAK. Do not run for re-election.

wise ole man

What a joke! Didn't the BOE meet seveal months ago at River Island- they weren't bothered. Mercer- thank goodness your time is up- Cross- please take note and leave too. As for the others - shame on you for allowing this to happen. You are no better than the other 2. WHy didn't Scott Dean offer his new place of business for the retreat? I am sure he could have used $2600.00!

Martinez

$2600 on a gathering of 25 people is definetely within reason. I agree that a distraction free environment is needed in some situations. This happens in business all the time and at a much greater expense.

I don't live in Columbia County, but I have a daughter and grandson who does, and I think this kind of spending is ridiculous and I DO AGREE WITH ALL OF THE ABOVE EXCEPT MArtinez, dummy!! Go to a chool and have your meeting, just like RC Commissioners and RCBOE are spending too much money on these so called meetings. They have so many breaks and 1 1/2 hrs or longer for luncher, talk about waste, that is wasteful. And my child works hard just to keep her house, vehicle and monthly bills paid, give me a break. Stay at home, sleep on your cheap sheets and drive to the meeting. Pay for your own food, gas and softdrinks, no onw pays all that for me. Ya'll act like the government and the taxpayers should pay eveything for you--BULL-Most of you do not even know what it is like to be desperate. All meetings for Col. Co. and Rich Co. no matter who it is should be held locally and no not catered. WE ARE IN A RECESSION, QUIT SPENDING OUT MONEY. Give your lowest paid employees who work the hardest a RAISE!!!
There is a lot more I could say but I have other things to do to make my own gas-food-and car payment, so gotta go.

It is obviously a treat for Commissioners. The Evans government complex is adequate for meetings. If they want to feel warm and fuzzy with each other, they could all go to dinner in a Columbia County restaurant paying their own way. One thing I remember about former Richmond County Mayor Larry Sconyers is that he never charged the county for anything. He paid his own way always if he attended meetings out of town. It would be nice if Columbia County Commissioners would get the idea. It is tax money they are spending...the public's money that we trust them with.

DuhJudge

Ya'll talk about these Commissioners as if they were members of the Soviet nomenclature. If they start building roads with special lanes for them to travel, then you have something to complain about. This complaint is ridiculous. This whole article is ridiculous. The only reason it made the newspaper is because the Chronicle makes such a big to do about Richmond County Commissioners traveling out of town. Their version of the Fairness Doctrine.

EXCUSE ME DUH JUDGE---THIS IS A RIDICULOUS MEETING. THEY NEED TO STAY IN THEiR OWN AREA, SUPPORT THE FOOD SERVICES IN THAT AREA. WE ARE ALL SICK OF THE TAXPAYERS, PAYING FOR THEIR LUXURY WHEN WE STRUGGLE EVERYDAY. These people already get cars and gas, and have special places to park, so their feet don't hurt to walk in a building. They are all money hunger for our money.

Little Lamb

They could have met at Savannah Rapids Pavilion and saved the travel expenses.

Little Lamb

Fetter must have been on a deadline to get this story in the paper. I hope he will follow up and publish the whole cost including transportation, hotel rooms, meals, incidentals, etc. The expense statements are public records, but it's hard for a layman to know he's got every expense when the clerk hands him a bunch of paper.

karmakills123

Seems like a reasonable amount to me...

double_standard

That Ritz-Carlton their in Greensboro is a very nice hotel. They have hosted many diplomats there from the lame duck president to numerous foreign leaders. But if this was Richmond County the commisoners name and how much they spent would have already been posted.

karmakills123

You know there is over 5,000.00 still missing over at the coliseum right now that no one is questioning...consider yourselves lucky to be in CC.

r11mcbell

Ron's people do an excellent job for our county. Those people who think they need to constantly work in a basement enviroment are not using your heads. Our servants work at very low pay and long hours. It is a good thing to let them getaway and not work in their usual setting. More good ideas and money saving ideas will flow when there is no one bothering you. Cross alone could garner 5 or 6 times his salary if he worked in the private side.

justthefacts

Possibly mcbell, but you can't justify this. All things considered, it is poor judgement. I like Tommy as much as anybody. Darn good ref. He should have been a little more...ah political.

Rob Pavey

I wonder if the county paid for any rounds of golf? this one might warrant a followup when the bills are in.

BOO

if cross had any offers at "5 or 6 times his salary" he would have been long gone. taxpayers should vote on whether they want our tax dollars spent on vacations!!!

wise ole man

Ron's people are our elected officals. That is one of the problems- Ron Cross thinks he is boss of the county. He is a representative of the people- he answers to us- or atleast the few that voted for him.

jack

Martinez, the cost provided in the article did not include $225 per room per person. I believe there are other, more affordable places than the ritzy Ritz Carlton. Vote Mercer and his ilk out or quit whining.

shivas

I wonder how many of these Commissioners are white?

BarstoolDreamer

yea...wait does what color they are imact the amount of money spent? What is the black dollar to white dollar conversion?

1941

It is so refreshing to read comments from CC, that stay on topic. Mabe the readers from RC can learn something from most of the posts. Most of the readers from RC, are still talking about the election, and who they voted for, or not..

Still Clarks Hill 2 Me

r11mcbell got it right. But Mercer needs some PR training. A better quote = an 80% reduction in the comments on this page. You can't please all the people all the time, but Mercer didn't please anyone.

realistineducation

just goes to show you the mentality of the hypocrites in office, who elected these people? you did
