AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mr. Ralph Erath Old, Sr, 85, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, passed into the hands of our Holy Father on Friday, November 14, 2008, at University Hospital. Funeral services will be held from the chapel of Chance & Hydrick Funeral Directors this Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at 1:00 PM with the Reverend Bill Burch officiating. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park. Mr. Old was born in Toledo, Ohio, son of the late James Lee Old, Sr, and Joy Belle Woodward Old. He proudly served in the United States Army, during World War II, doing tours in France, Belgium, and Germany. After he was honorably discharged, he settled down in Augusta to start his family with his lovely wife, Charlotte Harwell Old. As a very young man, he joined the CCC and helped to build the very buildings at Fort Gordon where he retired as a Civil Service Instructor of Electronics with the United States Signal Corps. He was an accomplished HAM amateur radio operator with an advanced license with the FCC. His call sign was K4BOG. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed wintering in Fort Myers Beach, Florida. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his only son, Ralph Erath Old, Jr. He also left love and precious memories to his grandchildren, Chris Old, Erath Old, Sean Old, and Renee Goodman, and great grandchildren, Amberley Brooks, Daniel Clements, Bailey Old, Riley Old, and Carson Old, and his special niece Diane and her husband, Vester 'Monty' Montgomery. The family will receive friends this Monday, November 17, 2008 from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Chance & Hydrick Funeral Directors, 2502 Richmond Hill Rd, Augusta, GA, 30906.
