SC priest says he was hasty in Obama comments

  • Follow Metro

GREENVILLE --- A South Carolina priest told his parishioners he was too hasty when he wrote on the church's Web site that those who voted for President-elect Barack Obama should refrain from taking Holy Communion because of Mr. Obama's abortion rights stance.

After getting a standing ovation from parishioners Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greenville, the Rev. Jay Scott Newman said he wrote his column in haste and would have explained his position better had he taken his time, The Greenville News reported.

The Rev. Newman said he wrote the column "at the last moment and right at the deadline," and he regrets the attention it has drawn. He said all future comments should come from South Carolina's Roman Catholic Diocese in Charleston.

My only problem I have with Rev. Newman is one of profound disappointment...He has backed down from a stance on the morally repugnant practice of slaughtering innocents simply because he has stirred up the bee hives...Doing and saying the right thing is not always popular...In fact it is frequently made fun of and declared as prejudiced to others who believe in "free choice"...Abortion is wrong, it is murder but a person can repent and be set free from the guilt and stain of the sin...Next time Rev. Newman do not back down, sir, from what you know to be the right thing to do...

You and I read this article differently, christian134. Rev. Jay said he was hasty, not wrong. His parishioners gave him a standing ovation for his stand, not his apology. He said future comments should come from his superiors because he didn't explain his position well enough. All of that was just politico speak for "I brought heat down on my bosses head and he told me to quit".

christian134

If I misread the article then I must by all accounts apologize...But as I see it for him to reply that he might have been in haste and regrets the unwanted attention is a form of regret...I do, however, applaud him for taking the stand and now I pray he will go forth and bring the message firmly, openly and without backing away...

Some people would support a country controlled by the Vatican. How sad. Sounds a lot like the Taliban.

christian134

The man commented on the insanity of slaughtering thousands upon thousands of innocents shivas...What has that to do with Vatican or Taliban control?...

cajunnana2000

He's just sucking up to the Pope.

Can't pay much attention to shiv; it sounds like a replay of the same old religious bigotry. He/she doesn't have a clue about the RCC but will still spew the same old venom and hatred.

jeelmy

Why do republicans blame the left for the dismal show of their elected Bush/Cheney? These self billed Christian conservatives never even attempted to reverse Row v. Wade, even though Bush said that would be a priority, instead, more funds were given Planned Parenthood. For the right to even use that to lure their "base" is absurd while killing more than 8 million babies while in the wombs of their mothers during unconstitutional wars. Really!

karmakills123

While Rev. Newman and Dr. Broun were in a way "over-ruled" the jury still heard the statments..

Republicant

He meant he was too hasty to make the comments, because his superiors have not decided how to deal with Obama yet. Considering 54% of Catholics voted for Obama, the Church is retooling it's teachings to reflect this.

Bizarro

Just think the population of the U.S. is some 300 million and since 1973 over 40 million abortions have been performed. That is a significant number. Just think, it is estimated similar to the number of deaths from Bubonic plaque in Europe. Every year a fifth to sixth of all pregnancies end in abortion. I support legal abortions but these numbers seem too high.

genbartow

"He was too hasty" means he didn't consider the financial ramifications.
Now the Catholic church will try to un-ring the bell.

Christian, he told parishioners they could not take communion if they voted for Obama. This is what is meant by the vatican trying to influence our political process in the US. Much like Muslim extremists who try to influence politics in secular societies. This is why our Founding Fathers sought to separate church from state. Fortunately for the Catholic Church in the US, Obama won their vote. Republicant, the Catholic Church is becoming more extremist with this new Pope, and has issued a statement saying Catholics must vote in elections, consistent with biblical teachings, or Catholic interpretation of those teachings.

soldout

There is no way a Christian could ever vote pro-death. How do you vote for a party that promotes sin and calls it good. We all sin but thinking you stop sowing and reaping by calling sin good is men thinking they are smarter than God. Why not obey God and His Word and receive the blessings and peace that come from that. Try it, if you don't like it, the devil will always take you back.

christian134

Unfortunate would have to be the fact that the most extreme liberal to date has entered into the White House along with his ultra liberal supporters... It has nothing to do with religion as religion can be anything or anyone that is deemed worthy of worship...Obama and the socialist ideologies have no use other than to further spiral a nation of immoral behaviors into a deeper abyss...But we can all do something...We can pray for this new President and we can tough it out all the while finding ways to fight the out of control "whatever it takes to feel good" society" to a society that seeks to end chaos with a renewal of God's moral code of right and wrong...

Another question to think about: Why is this story even newsworthy? It seems to me that this is an internal affair for the RCC and it has no effect on the public in general. This is a case of a Pastor speaking to his congregation about a matter of morality that has been addressed and clarified by the Catholic bishops. What he said was consistent with what the bishops have been saying so why is this event worthy of all this attention. Who really cares what Catholic bishops and priests have to say?

the idiot should be removed from the priesthood, such hate should not be preached in a House of God, shame you, and shame on the Catholic Church if they do not remove you. hypocrite

............................................................................................................................Shiv, you poor ignorant soul. Abortion was a moral issue long before it became a poliical issue. It was not politicized by any religious organization but by legislators and the courts who legalized what was immoral. The founding fathers never uttered the term "seperation of church and state" and the way it is used today is not what the framers of the constitution intended.

Shivas, there is just one slight difference between the Taliban / the Vatican. The Taliban slaughters innocent people everyday for their beliefs. The vatican always speaks out against violence. What an idiotic statement you made!

LifeIsSoGood

You folks are truly entertaining. One simple article is written and it is unbelievable how many directions the topic goes throughout the string of blogs. Have any of you ever attended Rev. Newman's church in Greenville? I have. He's a nut case. And if any of you ever actually read and comprehended the newspaper, you would have seen in the AC, 2 days ago, "COLUMBIA --- A Roman Catholic priest in South Carolina should not have told parishioners who voted for President-elect Barack Obama to refrain from taking Holy Communion because of his pro-abortion rights stance, said Monsignor Martin T. Laughlin, the administrator of the Diocese of Charleston and a senior official in the church." In summary ... Newman spoke improperly, Newman's boss corrected him, and Newman is trying to do damage-control. But some of you are correct, for more reasons than this. It's time for him to be removed from the priesthood ... at least, sent away for some re-training.

PLAYLIKETHUNDER4

you are full of crap shivas....you have a lot of room to sqawk about people influencing voters when you boy ob was just voted for by people simply beacause he is black, uh, well, half black.
youy people wanted him, you got him, but don't dare talk against common decency, and the morale right ,legal right of a priest to follow his beliefs....

shivas

Hossiv, how often did the Catholic Church cover-up for child molesters? The Catholic church is losing members day after day because they are bcoming more extreme. If some of you believe that your voting should be dictated by the Pope, then that is for you to decide. The separation from Church and State was exactly because of this issue with the Papacy. Get some education Paws.

paws, your are a fascist, and you must be destroyed
as you will be, come jan 20

shivas

playlikethunder, us white folks voted for him as well. He won more white male voters than anyone since JFK. I believe this Preist can say what he wants. However, when he starts telling people that they have to vote a certain way, or not be able to take communion, then that's something different. For you to support that notion is truly supporting religious extremism which is no different than the Taliban or Islamic militants. You know, the Catholic Church has a very long history of genocide. Go luck it up. start in South America.

sanders23

I don't give a flip what party you a part of. The "priest" had no right to tell his followers not to take holy communion. Obama and or McCain should never even come up in conversation inside a church. Try reading the bible and not just believe what some moron on a podium tells you.

sanders23

Dare I say..I 100% agree with Shivas.

justthefacts

The Priest didn't say they could not recieve communion, only that they should refrain. Big difference. They have a choice. He was giving advice based on the Church's belief that abortion is a sin. Condoning it is a sin. Catholics are not suppose to recieve communion when they are living in sin.

"The Taliban slaughters innocent people everyday for their beliefs. The vatican always speaks out against violence" by hossiv 9:24AM. You must of been educated in the south. Did you ever take this class at school called "HISTORY?"

Have you ever heard of the crusades?
