Glenn Hills High School football team deserves recognition by the paper, too

  • Follow Letters

My husband and I, along with several other parents, are huge sports fans.

We are also parents of a son who plays football for Glenn Hills High School.

We have noticed the lack of recognition they are receiving from the paper.

Those boys worked hard all year long and had several games where they really made outstanding plays to win a game and they were not noticed by the paper!

They are also in the playoffs again this year, and again, not recognized in the paper!

We will be traveling to Griffin, Ga. tomorrow along with a busload and several carloads of fans that have paid to go support these boys. But today, like other days, we notice you have a write-up about a team that has only won 2 games.

That's good to give them some publicity but why not recognize all the talent in the CSRA?

Is it because schools like Glenn Hills, Laney, Hephzibah, to name a few, which are also in the playoffs, are located on the wrong side of town?

No hint in that line. I'm stating racism on behalf of the sports department.

Those boys are good boys and they work just as hard as Greenbrier, Evans, Lakeside, Westside, etc.

It seems to me that you base your coverage on something that may have happened at black schools that involve other students not affiliated with the athletes.

Those boys are good and most of them end up in 4-year colleges. They recognize the prejudice of all this and they are hurt by it. They have feelings and they are hurt.

We as parents are upset because we have to console these boys over something that they know they should be recognized for. They worked hard to accomplish their goals just like the other teams that are so represented in the paper. It's just unfair.

I agree, what you hear about in RC schools is who shot who or what fight happened, but alot of the RC sports teams this year are really kicking butt...

Did you forget to get the "memo" that racism is dead...Get over the idea that you, Carolyn, can so glibly throw that race game card out and it is going to stick...Not in my book...Stuff happens and if the kids schools don't get recognized just do what the rest of the schools do...Get off your pity pot and call the papers, tv studios as well as anyone else you can think of and get the word out...For crying out loud the day of "I or he/she is black is not going to stick...Many don't get the recognition they deserve...You want to know what that is? Carolyn it is called "life"...

Dear Carolyb aren't you proud that your son will wind up in a 4 year college, but the chances of his graduating are less than 5% because football isn't a graduate program. If you want me to be proud of Glen Hills then tell the kids there to start acting like members of the human race and quit acting like criminals. Or is that too much for you as a parent? Last I heard that school was down in the rankings as a academic facility, so what is the most important for you, an education or a fine career as a H.S. football player? I wonder which will help him in life?

I concede there MAY be some racism involved, but I qualify that by saying in the late 60's and 70's when I was a student there it was majority white yet one of our biggest complaints was the lack of media coverage when our football team was doing well. Even when we won, the headline would read similar to this: Richmond Academy suffers an unexpected loss. They wouldn't even put the name of our school in the headline when we would win! When I went to college and was making the highest scores possible in Art History, the professor gave me a clue. Puzzled when I was getting extra credit for material she hadn't even covered, she asked, "How are you making such good grades, aren't you from a school out in the sticks?" I had a similar comment from a jealous mom when I told her at Walker I had three children at Davidson. She asked, "What are YOU doing with children at Davidson?" I asked, "What do you mean?" She sneered, "Don't you live in that section 8 neighborhood, 'X'?" I asked, "What is section 8?" She said, "Oh, NEVERMIND." in exasperation. It seems GHHS just wasn't "significant" enough in their circles to bother recognizing its achievements. I did write a complaint.

Just the Facts Please

Dear folks, As for those of you who want to make generalizations about student bodies let me have you rest assured that the young people attending Richmond County Schools are for the most part" good kids". Some make mistakes that are costly to themselves and others and harm their respective communites equally. This goes for the westside of town as well as the southside. What Mrs. Mack is proposing to you is that there seems some sort of bias as it relates to majority african american schools. I must agree with her on this point as I see the paper in Augusta as one sided. I remember some years ago when my son came home upset about the Westside Homecoming T Shirt. It had the Patriot (White soldier) pointing at and laughing at an indian who was crying and walking down a road, with a signage that said"Trial of Tears" and a slogan saying "Homecoming patritot style" . Did the paper say anything about it when contaced? No. So I contacted my friend Chad Smith Prinicpal Chief of the Cherokee. (because I sent them a t shirt) Who got the school and senoir class as well as the superintendent to apologize. Racism exists. It hurts on all levels. It is something that needs to end.

I had hoped things had changed for GHHS. Apparently not a whole lot. Except after I left, my father substitute taught there and recommended that if I taught school, not to teach above elementary level if I taught in Richmond County based on what he experienced there. He had been a drill sgt., military instructor and drug counselor in the military, but he said nothing prepared him for what he faced at that school. He went on to a second career as a counselor at a medical prison, and even then he said it was not as stressful as Glenn Hills. What does that tell you? That was in the late '70's after I left and early 80's he was at GHHS. So things haven't gotten much better in that respect either? What a shame. That needs to be addressed.

I sure do miss Jeff Sentell he covered all schools equally.

There are and have always been good kids at GHHS. Lots of them. Too bad a few bad eggs make it hard for the reputation of the school. Hopefully things will start turning around now.

PROOF THAT RACISM IS ALIVE AND WELL IN THE SOUTH

Taharqa

wow , i didnt know that criminals were not human , lol.

Taharqa

such beautiful , kind , and understanding people in augusta , makes you wonder why the town is still the same way it was 20 years ago.

Taharqa

to speak on this topic , because i have an sincere interest on this subject , since i am a graduate of glenn hills high. what does athletic exposure have to do with what reputation the school has in general? i thought that what the athletic program does in another arena , shouldn't be marred by any negative reputation that the school might have.

coachemery

Anyone know where Jeff is working now?

Taharqa

i think that it would be a fair assessment that the augusta chronicle is semi-racist when it comes to showing support to athletic programs in the inner city. lakeside , greenbriar , and evans are technically not even augusta schools , but yet seem to get more exposure in this good ol' boy southern newspaper.

Taharqa

Glenn Hills record is pretty darn good , and what a shame that you guys at the chronicle didn't shed more light on the season they are having , but yet you got lakeside High , a school that which Glenn hills obliterated , I might add, getting more press than the True Blue Spartans.

Taharqa

christian134 , you are in such denial about anything that points to white racism. you are the epitome of why the south will remain behind the rest of the u.s. , because you cannot let common sense preside over your racist southern views.

KingJames

As a graduate of Glenn Hills, I get the football scores from the AC. I have also noticed that our players never really get any headlines, even when we win. I could somewhat understand it when our record was not so good, but there aren't even headlines about our rivalry with Butler. When I attended Glenn Hills, I have to admit the team wasn't always that great, but they are far better now than I have ever known them to be. They deserve some headlines. I won't go as far as to say that it is racial, but I will say that I believe the sports reporters for whatever reason never expect Glenn Hills to win a football game. Those reasons whatever they might be make them biased against the Spartans. If they think that no one is interested, then the LTE from Carolyn Mack proves they are wrong.

christian134

Wow now that is one I haven't come to terms with yet...I am the epitome of what a --what did you say...white racist...Oh come come now don't leave me out here all by myself Taharga..Blacks do not have to look very far when it comes to calling a person racist...Please it is like calling the pot calling the kettle black...I haven't any use for the left-wing socialist liberal ideologies...As far as Obama is concerned I never support or vote for someone who has extreme liberal views as this man so obviously has...If your black and depressed get some help otherwise I am not the source of your problems or any other black out there today...We have a extreme liberal for our next President who just as a side note is black...So what else is it you want Taharga?

christian134

You know what folks the only thing wrong here is that life happens...Some get the glory and fame while others just play the game and that is that...My kids played sports and quite frankly if they didn't get the headlines it never crossed my mind to believe it was anything other that school rivalries or just not meant to be..It was not racist then and it is not now...It is life...For crying out loud not everything is racist...Some have some don't some will some never will...It is life people...Take the race pity party game and "stuff it"...This is being said as nicely as possible for this moment in time...:-)

Jeff Sentell is in Alabama now :(

I hope Mrs. Mack's son graduates with more common sense than his mother has. Her mind is encased in concrete and will never be open to a new idea. Where is she looking for "recognition" of the Glenn Hills football team? In the society pages? In the classifieds? On the comics page? She obviously has failed to read the sports section, because Glenn Hills' games are covered there quite adequately and equally with the other CSRA teams.

Mama sounds [filtered word] and proud. You go mama.

Taharqa, you actually graduated?

youbetcha

hey evans deserves the coverage that it got!! 10 & 0 now that's something to write about , and guess what? they have black and white players!!!

lifelongresidient

first and foremost how about all the parents get involved with EDUCATION?!?!?!? what good is football when the school can't graduate over 50% of its senior class or pass ayp??? but here in georgia football is king, glen hills and all other underperforming high schools will make the papers with positive press more if they would concentrate more on academics, which will then lead to more college scholarships on the academic and sports levels and once they get in college have a better chance to graduate. if it was up to me glenn hills, josey, laney and all other schools that do not graduate over 60% of their senior class will have their spoerts programs suspended until they. even if it means expelling all of the disruptive, disrespectful and students are there for anything other than learning. don't worry as i said before 3-5 years richmond county will lose their accredidation like clayton county anyway, then what good will "football" be?
