Looking back at the history of our developing nation, it was once easy to define our goals and identify the enemies that stood in the way of our growth and freedom. We were encouraged to work, succeed in our endeavors.
Is that same path open to all now?
The press served as our conscience, keeping us aware of, among other things, the missteps of Congress. We had leaders -- statesmen -- who thought first of our country and not the benefits they would receive. Those who served politically were more inclined to shorten their tenure than make it a profession. Our work ethic was encouraged and a symbol of what makes us a great nation. The world saw us as a beacon of light where a family could have the freedom to grow, prosper and worship as they pleased.
At our inception as a nation, it was predicted that our demise would come when we discovered the way to reward ourselves from our treasury. The words, "As Americans, we deserve the best medical support available," or "No man, woman or child in America should starve or be without shelter" capture the beginning of that prophecy.
When those statements are the guidelines for our government, we have indeed reached the turning point toward failure. As individuals and as a nation we have always been generous, even to a fault (aid to starving nations, hurricane victims). There is a difference between volunteering and mandating support for those in need.
Our enemy has become apathy -- not caring, expecting something for nothing.
It is bad enough that our laws are being interpreted against our religious beliefs. Even worse, the media play down the sworn purpose of Muslims to eradicate the Christian world, and it is a further insult not to mention what is happening in Europe. The press no longer acts as our conscience but perpetuates its own elitist thinking.
If we elect those who stand for socialism, then we have started the destruction of the American dream for our children and grandchildren. It has been said that we will be defeated from within. We just do not seem to care or understand.
