SUWANEE, Ga. - Maxine Amelia Schive Widener, beloved wife of Jack L. Widener, passed away quietly in the Atlanta, Georgia Area, on Nov. 14, 2008 at the age of 91. Mrs. Widener was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa, in 1917, to Hope and Francis Schive and lived there until her marriage to Jack Lamar Widener of Augusta, Ga., in 1945. Maxine and Jack were married for 54 years until his death in 1999. They lived on Richmond Ave., in Augusta for 51 years until they moved to the Atlanta area to live with their son, Bruce Widener, due to failing health. For the last 9 years, Mrs. Widener has lived with her daughter, Constance Widener Malott and her husband, Jack, in Suwanee, Ga. Mrs. Widener was an active and involved member of Curtis Baptist Church for her entire adult life as a Sunday school teacher, a member of the choir, WMU, pastoral search committee, and various other positions of leadership. Curtis was a major part of their lives the entire time they live in Augusta. Maxine was a voracious reader, loved to work crossword puzzles, put puzzles together and loved to make peanut butter crunchies for the family. Mrs. Widener was a graduate of the Iowa State Teachers' College and retired from a long and distinguished teaching career which included tenure at Curtis Baptist School, Augusta Vocational School, and Butler High School. The children all agree that Maxine was the best mother that they could have ever hoped to have. "We never knew what a great mother and childhood we had until we were grown and heard others talk about their early days." Surviving family members include a sister, Constance Peters of Fredericksburg, Va.; children, Constance Widener Malott of Suwanee, Ga., Bruce Widener of Johns Creek, Ga., Rusty Widener of Wichita, Kan.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Widener was dearly loved by all who knew her and will be terribly missed. Funeral service will be held at the Curtis Baptist Church, Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008 at 3 p.m. with Rev. Sherrill Dunn officiating. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Augusta, Ga. Mrs. Widener will lie in state at the church one hour prior to service.
