Verdict is still out on Dogs' receivers

  • Follow UGA

ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia receivers coach John Eason isn't quite ready to declare this year's Bulldogs' dynamic duo at the position the best he's had at Georgia quite yet.

Freshman A.J. Green and senior Mohamed Massaquoi rank first and third in the Southeastern Conference in receiving yards and fourth and fifth in receptions.

"They've got a couple of more games to go," Eason said. "The jury is still out right now."

Eason still isn't ready to declare Green and Massaquoi better than Reggie Brown and Fred Gibson , starters together in 2003 and 2004.

"Right now, they are rivaling that group," Eason said. "I'll decide after the bowl game."

Eason's receivers have combined for 145 catches this season for the top passing offense in the SEC, led by Green with 46 catches for 806 yards and six touchdowns and Massaquoi with 41 catches for 669 yards and five TDs.

"It's always a sense of pride when the guys that you recruit, you coach and you see them playing well," Eason said. "If they don't play well, obviously you get the brunt of it and if they play well, then they're doing a great job."

Eason has felt the brunt for dropped passes by his players in past seasons, but this year his wideouts are making plays.

"You know coach Eason's definitely having fun now," junior receiver Michael Moore said. "He's definitely more upbeat now. He's able to joke with us out on the field when we're able to make plays. He makes our life easier and we make his life easier."

FOR STARTERS: Redshirt sophomore Josh Davis probably will start ahead of Kiante Tripp at offensive right tackle, but both should play, Georgia coach Mark Richt said. The two were competing this week to fill in for Justin Anderson , who is out with a foot injury.

"Josh can play," Richt said. "Josh knows what to do. Josh has been kind of a putty man for us. He's been playing guard. He's probably played each guard and each tackle. I know he practiced at every position but center. He knows what to do. His technique is getting better."

The one downside for Davis is he still needs to get stronger, Richt said.

THIS AND THAT: Georgia will wrap up a four-week stretch of four consecutive games on the road.

"One more time in the stadium, one more time cranking up the noise," Richt said before practice. "It's been a little bit of a Groundhog's Day here the last four weeks in terms of the preparation mode. We'll change the music to something Auburn."

YEAR AFTER YEAR AFTER YEAR

YEAR AFTER YEAR AFTER YEAR AFTER YEAR, Mark Richt can recruit terrific top shelf athletes and coach them down to a mediocre team. He wins enough to make the fans believe that he can deliver the national championship, and it will never happen under his watch. The best college football coach in the nation does reside in Athens, Georgia...............and his name is Jim Donnan. DAWG FANS, you can thank President (DICTATOR) Michael Adams for the reality of NO National Championship for 28 years and counting..... Richt is a good man, a devout Christian, and a great recruiter, but he does not and will never have the "grit", the "mean streak", the "relentlessness" that a coach must have to achieve the ultimate prize. Richt may "get you to the door", and may even "knock on the door", but he lacks the necessary elelments to "KICK THE DOOR DOWN", and claim the prize. If not for that moron Adams who terminated Donnan because he was not a "press the flesh" kind of coach, UGA would have enjoyed at least one but probably more than one National Championship by now.

If Jim Donnan was any good he would still be at UGA, 8-4 year after year gets you fired at UGA. At usc or vandy 8-4 gets you a 10 year contract....

Shocker, Danny Ford took the Tigers a long way. Mark Richt is a fine coach. Even Bear Bryant wasn't national champion every year. Georgia has great receivers and running backs and QB. Their defense can be taken advantage of. Go 'Cocks.

Donnan recruited okay, and

Donnan recruited okay, and left good players for Richt to start with, but obviously he was not winning enough games. Ron Zook recruited well, and left great talent for Urban Meyer to start with at Florida, but Meyer must have been better at coaching up that talent. Richt has been the best thing for UGA since Vince Dooley, despite not getting into the national title game. During the Ray Goff and Jim Donnan years I just remember Tennessee and Florida dominating that side of the SEC.

Danny Ford was only the coach

Danny Ford was only the coach at Clemson when they were given the National Championship. Not one of his recruits played in that game. Charley Pell built the team, Danny Boy just happened to fall in place. His tenure at Clemson would have possibly been a little longer if he could have kept his pants on. Danny Boy was a know womanizer, especially around the Augusta area. He doesen't even know what a football looks like, only women.

If Donnan was such a great

If Donnan was such a great coach, then ummmmmmmmmmm, why the heck hasn't another school hired him? And our receivers coach is not noted as a genius. Bobo, Willie and several others need to be let go by Georgia for us to have a real shot to go further towards a NC. But, we play solid football year in and year out and I'm happy with that. Go Dawgs.

pretty solid mediocre

pretty solid mediocre performance again today, totally boring, not impressive.....yea, better than average team, but nothing to post exciting blogs about. Quite a deflation for you dawg fans i bet, told them all, Georgia should never of played a game this year. You would still be #1 in a dawg brain. My prediction...Georgia vs Ball State in Peach.
