Drought getting worse, state forecaster warns

  • Follow Metro

Drought conditions across the northern half of Georgia are worsening, with water levels in lakes and streams at near record levels, state Climatologist David Stooksbury said Thursday.

Thurmond Lake and the two reservoirs upstream on the Savannah River -- Lakes Hartwell and Russell -- are at or near record low levels, Dr. Stooksbury said. "Both Russell and (Thurmond) have less than two feet of usable pool left."

Lake Lanier, a major source of water for the Atlanta area, is at a record low level for mid-November, he said.

Portions of Lincoln and Wilkes counties are in exceptional drought -- the most extreme category. Richmond, Columbia and McDuffie counties are in extreme drought, the second-worst category, Dr. Stooksbury said.

He said there is no indication that the upcoming winter will be abnormally wet or dry.

I live part time in the NC Mountains...for the first time my town is considering water rationing. However...rain in the last day or two and more to come this week end is going to help. At present we are 12 inches below normal. The creek behind my properity is down to just a trickle...things have been worse...this too shall pass. {I pray}

Tell it like it is

If the corps would only release the normal flow of the river we would have more water at Lake Thurmond. They are generating power 10 to 12 hours a day, that is too much release of water. The REA's don't need to purchase the power from them anyway. Just let it dry up and plant a garden around the docks that are 12 ft from the water. Well the Govt seems to always do the wrong thing so what could we expect.
