Georgia Senate runoff crucial to nation

  • Follow Editorials

So you thought the election was over? No way. One of the most important elections of the year is taking place right here in Georgia in the runoff between Republican U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss and challenger Jim Martin.

The race is important enough for President-elect Barak Obama to flood the state with "community organizers," including 15 sent to Augusta, to get out the vote for Martin. And Republicans are sending in heavy hitters to stump for Chambliss, including John McCain, Sarah Palin and Mike Huckabee.

The stakes couldn't be higher. There are still undecided Senate races in Alaska, Minnesota and Georgia. If all three go Democratic -- and the first two are trending that way -- Democrats will have a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate, giving Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, both far-out liberals, unbridled congressional power, even if Obama disagrees with them.

This is why the re-election of Chambliss is a must. He may be all that stands between the American people and congressional tyranny.

And when all the Obama supporters arrive they need to remind everyone that Chambliss voted twice against S-CHIP, a program aimed at providing healthcare for children whose parents are the working poor. So, we need to send this guy packing along with President Bush who vetoed that bill.

What a hoot! Just what we need in Washington indeed! Most of the country had seen enough and sent the accomplices of President Bush packing. There are still holdover states that don't seem to see the light, of which my beloved Georgia sadly is one. On the other hand, that number is shrinking. This country is full of mostly moderates. The Republicans took advantage of 9/11 and kept themselves in office out of fear mongering, not acquiescence to neo-conservative ideals. The people simply got tired of the rhetoric and lack of governance. The constant howling about Reid and Pelosi rings hollow as well. The Democratic make-up in both houses is moving rapidly to the center and will keep plenty of tabs on the respective Speakers. I welcome McCain and Palin in Georgia. Along with Rep. Broun, they will work wonders for the efforts of the unconscionable Chambliss, who shamelessly used the same unethical tactics in unseating a very decent Senator Cleland. The people are weary of it, editorial board. Very weary. Wedge issues are becoming less and less effective, and, for the love of Mike, people are a lot smarter than you think. You guys need to do yourselves a favor. Open those eyes.

I think I'd vote for Martin just to spite the likes of PT and the AC!

PTHS225

GAC - We'd exepect nothing else from you. The good news is, with 2 white guys running, the Obama vote will stay on their porches and streetcorners. We'll handle this - one day you will thank us.

G-You on the right have handled things long enough. While I do occasionally sit on my porch, I do not hang out on streetcorners. Otherwise, I spend my time savings lives in a Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. Plenty of Dems work just as many of the Reps do not. Sounds stereotypical and bigoted.

patriciathomas

With a run off scheduled, the Repub has a chance of winning. If it were as simple as a recount, the Dems would be a shoo in.

Ga Values

Saxby is a Big Spending, Big Government, Pro Amnesty Socialist who works for the LOBBYIST not Georgia. Saxby's Calls & emailis were running 1,000 to 1 AGAINST the Wall Street Bailout but Saxby took over $2,000,000.00 from the LOBBYIST and sold us out. A vote for Saxby is not a vote for the Republican Party but a vote for the LOBBYIST that gives him the most money. My vote goes to Martin & hope he works for Georgia not the Lobbyist like Saxby.

Ga Values

SAXBY sells us out with the LIBERALS, Boxer, KENNEDY, Reid, & Pelosi. Saxby will do anything for his LOBBYIST MASTERS................. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cK5TprmkgRw&feature=related

Vote! I don't care who your candidate is, vote. Run offs generally cause a poor turn out. This election is kinda like the presidential election this year. Neither candidate is a great choice. Republicans should & have been punished for betraying the trust of the voters and getting away from conservative values. But so should Democrats.

I4PUTT

GA VALUES...so I assume you will vote a straight Republican ticket????

American International Group plans to pay out $503 million in deferred compensation to some of its top employees, saying it must tap the funds to keep valuable workers from exiting the troubled insurance giant.

News of the payments to top AIG talent comes as the federal government has just put more money into saving the company from bankruptcy, beefing up the total public commitment to $152 billion. Meanwhile, members of Congress are questioning the company's expenditures -- including lavish business trips to resorts -- during a time when taxpayers are on the hook for the bailout.

AIG's troubles stem from bad bets it made guaranteeing and buying risky mortgage investments. On Monday, the U.S. government announced that it would have to expand its rescue of the company to nearly double the $85 billion loan it first provided in September when AIG was unable to pay billions of dollars in claims.

Ga Values

I4PUTT---I voted a straight Republican ticket because Allen Buckley is a REAL REPUBLICAN. In the runoff it's the Democratic vs. the LOBBYIST party, so I'll try Martin & hope for the best.

GATOR you are an idiot. I guess the Chambliss votes will stay in the trailer parks and the sex offenders lock up?

christian134

GACopper now that is the best reason of all to vote for Martin just to spite patricia and the Newspaper...Wow that is cleaver and should rate way up on the scale of good positive clear thinking...Proud of you as well as all those who see this as their reason for voting Martin...:-)

convertedsoutherner

Check out the votes martin has made. We can tell how O, pelosi/reid will govern by the dims last 2 yrs in control of congress. If you want 2 more years of the high gas prices, investigation of baseball, crisis in the economy, no secret votes for union members, higher prices in services and products, etc, etc., be sure to put dims in total control of the congress. If you want a pelosi/reid puppet -- vote for martin. Be careful of the 'change' you hope/wish for -- You probably aren't going to like what you get.

double_standard

Saxby Chambliss has done nothing fo Georgia. Saxby, Sonny, and Johnny have sat on their [filtered word] and ruined the state's education, economy, and healthcare. Vote Jim Martin

convertedsoutherner

Give facts why martin should get the votes. What is his history, policies and what does he plan for the country?

GACopperhead

As is typical. Republicans don't comprehend sarcasm. I will vote for Martin partly because of the lies the Republicans have put out, especially about the fair tax. The Republican party is the party of fear and lies.

GACopperhead

convertedsoutherner, converted from what? or is it to? I'd suggest from common sense to Republican.

convertedsoutherner

NO facts. If you don't like the message - attack the messenger.

patriciathomas

Yes GaC, everything you don't understand is a lie. How Democratic if of you.

sjgraci

John McCain on Chicken Hawk Chambliss: "worse than disgraceful... reprehensible."

GLC

convertedsoutherner...Below are some facts that motivate me to vote for Martin in the run-off:
Chambliss...
... Voted with Bush better than 90% of the time over the last almost eight years.
... Supports amnesty for illegals.
... Was not able to save one military base in Georgia.
... Has consistentlyvoted for the interests of corporations and the fats.
... is now running against Pelosi, Reid, and his own performance record.

Perhaps most importantly, Chambliss should not be rewarded for poor performance on behalf of the middle class of Georgia.

convertedsoutherner

What are the facts about martin and what are his plans for GA?

jack

Hyper, the S on SCHIP stands for socialized medicine and yep, he voted against it.

jack

GAC, you'd vote for Martn 'cause you are just that stupid.

jack

GLC which military bases did GA lose because of Chambliss? Ya' think he can sway an independent panel all by himself? I ain't a Chambliss fan, but definitley fear total control of the Senate by the DIMs.

BobG

The only lies concerning the Fair Tax have been from Democrats. The Fair Tax would eliminate all current federal income taxes, and the IRS. All to be replaced by an embedded tax of approximately 23 percent. The more you spend, the more tax you pay, giving us a degree of control we don't have now. There would be no need for the IRS since there would be no income tax law to enforce. Everyone in the country would receive a rebate once a year to cover cost of living expenses. The real beauty of the Fair Tax is that politicians would no longer be able to use the tax code (there wouldn't be a tax code) to punish and reward citizens. Martin and his accomplices understand this, but think voters are stupid. He continues to run ads which claim Chambliss wants to tack on an extra 23 percent to current taxes. An outright lie. The Fair Tax wouldn't take effect until the current system has been legally abolished. There would be no overlap.

GLC

jack...The Navy School in Athens and Ft. McPherson in Atlanta and another which I cannot recall at the moment. Chambliss had zero influence in the matter despite his loyal support of Bush and the Republican agenda. You will recall that up until two years ago the Republcans dominated the Congressional and Executive branches.

Convertedsouther...Martin is a Democrat, which bodes well for his influence to get things done for Georgia. Chambliss had eight years and now wants to be rewarded for doing nothing.
