Bob Franklin is preparing to cast his largest show ever.
"There are nearly 50 people in this show," said Mr. Franklin, who will hold auditions for Inherit the Wind at 3 p.m. today and 7 p.m. Monday.
In March, Mr. Franklin directed a youth wing production of M*A*S*H, with 30 actors; that was his largest cast until now.
In addition to 30 speaking parts, there are roles for singers and musicians.
"I need lead singers and a choir. There is a lot of music in this show. There are hymns as well as other songs from the '20s, when this is set," he said. "I'd like some strong singers."
Singers should demonstrate their ability with a traditional song, such as Amazing Grace, He's Got the Whole World in His Hands or Give Me that Old Time Religion.
Inherit the Wind is based on the 1925 trial in Dayton, Tenn., of John Scopes, which is often called the Scopes Monkey Trial. Mr. Scopes was convicted of teaching evolution, which was then a violation of Tennessee law.
Mr. Franklin said the play is about more than the trial.
"Man was given a brain. Not only does he have a right, he has an obligation to think," he said. "I'm not playing it as creationism versus evolution. It's more about the right of people to think."
Rehearsals for Inherit the Wind will begin soon after auditions, he said, and the show will open for three weekends beginning Jan. 16.
Mr. Franklin said he hopes the stage will be big enough for the entire cast.
