AIKEN --- Aiken County schools will have to cut $941,000 in their budget by Monday, but the cuts shouldn't affect classrooms, according to district personnel.
Administrators knew another round of cuts were on their way after Gov. Mark Sanford let stand the Legislature's statewide budget reductions last week.
Aiken County schools Comptroller Tray Traxler said plans for reductions are due to the state Education Department by Monday.
"We're not cutting any programs," he said.
About $217,000 was available from proposed summer school funds for the 2009 session. The rest of the $941,000 will be paid by shifting funds from ACT 135, which provides academic assistance to classrooms.
"It basically means we're using the ACT 135 money to balance the budget, and we'll have less available to balance the general fund next year," he said.
Mr. Traxler said that in discussions with Superintendent Beth Everitt, they have talked about scenarios for reducing next year's budget, but classroom sizes and teaching positions aren't being affected by the most recent cuts.
"The state gave us about seven or eight funds we could choose to cut from, so they'll know next month which monies to reduce when they cut our checks," he said.
This is the second round of cuts this year for Aiken County schools. The district reduced its budget by more than $5 million in the spring.
