Suspect sought after man is shot on porch

Aiken authorities are seeking a man accused of shooting another man in the head Wednesday evening at an Aiken residence.

Aiken Department of Public Safety officers said a 24-year-old man was standing on his porch in the 300 block of Freiday Lane when several shots were fired at 6:54 p.m.

The injuries are not life-threatening, police said.

The shooter is described as a heavy-built black man dressed in black.

Anyone with information is asked to call (803) 643-7687. A cash reward is being offered for information in the case.

Men accused in chase turn themselves in

Two men accused of firing at deputies during a chase earlier this week surrendered to authorities Wednesday.

Julian Durden III, 20, and William Dalzell, 23, are charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, according to Richmond County sheriff's jail records.

The men turned themselves in about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.

In the incident, Burke County authorities notified Richmond County deputies of a chase involving a black Nissan pickup allegedly driven by one of the suspects Sunday morning.

Richmond County deputies began chasing the vehicle on Georgia Highway 56 after it crossed the county line, a sheriff's report states.

The passenger fired a rifle at deputies.

The men abandoned the pickup on a dirt road off Brown Road, according to the report.

Authorities say the men traveled to Lincoln, Ala., while they were being sought and returned to Augusta in a Nissan Sentra, which was then dumped in the Savannah River near the Lock and Dam.

Man freed after arrest for conduct at polls

A former Augusta State University Department of Public Safety officer was released from the Columbia County Detention Center early Wednesday after his Election Day arrest at a polling place on a charge of disorderly conduct.

James Joseph Stachowiak, 47, of the 300 block of Mears Street in Martinez, was sitting in his vehicle outside the Columbia County Library about 5:30 p.m.

Witnesses said he started to rant about his political views when approached by an Evans woman who told him the American flag sticking out of his vehicle's sunroof was turned upside down.

The woman went to find a special duty officer working inside the library after she thought she saw a weapon in Mr. Stachowiak's vehicle.

Police said they found an empty holster to a handgun in the passenger seat of the vehicle in addition to a tactical baton and pepper spray that Mr. Stachowiak was carrying.

Woman still in critical condition after wreck

A two-vehicle wreck Wednesday afternoon on North Belair Road in Martinez left a Grovetown woman critically injured.

Janice Holton, 53, of Martinez, was traveling north when she crossed the center turn lane and struck a truck driven by Gleda Rich, 54, of Grovetown, head on, according to police.

Ms. Rich was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition Wednesday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Doctors Hospital treated and released Ms. Holton, according to their spokeswoman.

Police charged Ms. Holton with failure to maintain lane, said Columbia County sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris.

Panel holds off on naming center

Augusta commissioners took no action on a request Wednesday to name Augusta's proposed new judicial center in honor of retiring presiding Georgia Court of Appeals Judge John H. Ruffin Jr.

The request by former Coliseum Authority member J.R. Riles cited Judge Ruffin's role in the civil rights movement, his distinction as Richmond County's first black Superior Court judge and his tenure on the Appeals Court. Commissioner Corey Johnson made a motion to grant Mr. Riles' request, but Commissioner Don Grantham said the board might be naming the building prematurely. Commissioners agreed to research the matter and come back with an official resolution.

Okay, shot in the head while on his porch and there are no life-threatening injuries. The victim had to be an Obama supporter.

huh????????

NoRestForMe

Hater...I mean Gator. It is early and when I would usually laugh at then ignore such an ignorant comment...I have a few minutes while my coffee is brewing and will indulge your "comment" in hopes that most everyone else will "laugh at and or ignore it". First and foremost I am grateful the bullet did not do too much damage to the victim..and to make ANY kind of negative comment..even though in your juvenile mind you thought yourself intelligent on being able to slip one in concerning the next President and those that support him, just goes to show the true lacking content of your character. Second...the majority voice was heard and we will begin a new direction because of it. I know it is killing you and will keep you up at night...Keep in mind there are flights leaving the country daily..if you don't care to support the New Direction..I am sure I could find some people to chip in purchase a ticket for you. I remember the old intro to the Wide World of Sports... The Thrill of Victory..the Agony of Defeat. Cheer up HatorRaid...as your way of "thinking" is no longer inline with where we are headed. Coffee is ready!

ListenAndLearn

Glad Stachowiak is out of Grovetown....he was a loud mouth here too and actually ran for office (I believe city council) several years ago. NO..he did NOT win. Thank you voters!

PTHS225

NoRest - More than 70% of the voters in my chosen county of residence did not vote for the current president-ELECT. I don't think I need to consider moving. Enjoy your coffee, you probably should have taken the laugh or ignore suggestion before showing your hatred and ignorance.

patriciathomas

The car chase cowboys seem to have lost much needed brain cells while on the lamb. They'd traveled to Lincoln, Al and returned in a stolen car to turn themselves in. The funny thing is, I think this is a common trait for this type of "adventurer". I'm surprised that these people can shoot at a policeman and only get charged with aggravated assault.

patriciathomas

NoRest, if Gator's little quip stirred you this much, you're going to have a miserable 4 years. You might want to consider not reading comments during that period.

NoRestForMe

HATOR-RAID...It is obvious you are bitter...The Democratic Process worked and you can't stand it. I see you stressed ELECT....that is right..there is a new President ELECT and I will repeat...if you are unhappy...such is life!!!

patriciathomas

Is it possible the peculiar behavior of James Joseph Stachowiak was caused by the spelling of his last name? That has to have an effect on a person after a while.

patriciathomas

If the new center were to be named after Judge Ruffin , how long before the nick name became Ruffin Up?

ColdBeerBoiledPeanuts

No rest, just some food for your brain, my business expansion plans which include hiring at least 10 more employees have been put on hold indefinitely! I want to see what the much TOOTED plan holds before I think of expanding my business or income!

NoRestForMe

Patricia...one need not be "stirred" to respond to comments as they see fit....thank you for your concern but my next four years will be Lovely!

NoRestForMe

Cold....That sounds like Smart Business. I would hope that smart business practice would be your choice regardless of the election outcome...true?

ColdBeerBoiledPeanuts

But more so now than with other results!

karmakills123

All plans are on hold.......no expansions no hiring..just laying low and flying under the radar.............. it's gonna be a hoot !! (toot....toot)
Don't Blame Me ...I Voted For McCain !!!

christian134

NoRest get some rest...Just because someone speaks out against the incoming President doesn't mean they are racists haters...If you were spoken to in that same manner you would probably become a candidate for a stroke...Let me clue you in on a what must amount to a little know secret obviously in your world Obama won that is a given..He is our new President...He was also the first love of the media nationally as well as world wide...Now for the secret as in every election the media by and large are fickle to the core...They will begin sniping at Obama soon enough after he enters the White House...You can take that to the bank NoRest so just get used to it...We are all in this thing together and as such we had better learn to live with each other because what happens to one is going to directly affect the rest of us one aspect or another...

NoRestForMe

Christian....If I feel the need to challenge a comment that equates Obama supports to having no brain then I have the right to do so....and will continue to if I feel the need. Thank you very much for your concern.

karmakills123

toot..toot !!! come on now ya'll caint we all justs gets along????
: O )

christian134

I never said that did I NoRest?...I commented on the fact that you stated, your words, that Gator must be a hater/racist and was an idiot...Where you get anything different is from your own understanding of what I actually said...

jackfruitpaper833

I really don't think no other major city has a problem like Augusta has when it comes to RACE, the good thing about being a racist whether you black or white, you will never show your face. You can spew it, but I bet you will never spew it out in the OPEN where everybody can see it, and put a face with a name, so most comments here you just have to Bite on your tongue and say, and believe that if a lot more people get saved and washed in the Blood of the Lamb, the new life in Christ will CHANGE THEIR MINDS. I think it's mostly small cities/towns southern papers that allow comments like this.

jackfruitpaper833

Don't blame me I voted for Obama.

jackfruitpaper833

I can't believe those two guys stole a car and drove back here to turn themselves in, lives wasted. God help them.

FallingLeaves

NoRestForMe. Don't forget your doughnut.

FallingLeaves

People spew hate all the time. I'm not even white, but because I look white and reported suspicious activity, noise complaints and drug-trafficking in my old neighborhood and "someone" tipped them off, the drug trafficker's girlfriends, co-dependents and drug trafficking network called me white Georgia cracker (I'm not even from Georgia), fat [filtered word] white b*tch, well, the list goes on nearly all prefaced by the word white. If that's not racist, I don't know what is. BTW, I NEVER responded. Ironically, I was advised not to respond and they would stop. WRONG! I reminded the law I NEVER responded and they never stopped. Seven years later, they still hadn't stopped and didn't even hold back in front of my minor children. Nothing was done about it, despite videotapes and a couple of officers own observations, so we finally moved. One of the families finally got evicted recently, and one other particularly foul-mouthed neighbor finally has quieted down now that her baby's daddy went to Federal prison for drug-trafficking cocaine and possession of marijuana. One drug-trafficker is still there, even after being arrested, probably got out for snitching on the other guy. Glad I moved.

HYPOCRITES 08

The rest of you don't forget your medication.

FallingLeaves

Sorry to go the long way around to get to the point, (as usual, bad habit of mine), but I was just trying to say, their racist diatribes were right out in the open, right to my face, right in front of my children. Only once did any of them blurt out anything in front of any adult with me, which confirmed to me they were bullying and cowardly. They wanted to enjoy their torture of me without any adult witnesses to corroborate what I had endured.

patriciathomas

Good advice Hypo, medication for all. It's the American way.

FallingLeaves

You, too, HYPOCRITES 08. Don't want that blood pressure topping out.

patriciathomas

I'm not white either baroness, even though I look white. I'm actually pink with orangish brown speckles (freckles). I think people yell racist stuff at me sometimes, but I don't know for sure, because when I accidentally point my pistol at them they get real quiet. I think it's coincidental.

FallingLeaves

LOL. If they had known what a good shot I was, none of them would have been shooting anything at my house. They never knew I even carried. They have no idea how patient I am. But I got so tired of replacing windows, I left the last window unfixed since it was just a BB that time and it only broke the storm window. I didn't replace the vinyl siding where a 9mm bullet went in, either.
