Regal Exchange will open IMAX with 'Madagascar'

  • Follow Metro

The IMAX experience will be available in Augusta starting Friday with the opening of an IMAX theater at the Augusta Regal Exchange 20.

The first film screened will be the animated comedy Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa .

IMAX theaters have traditionally used extremely large screens and complex surround sound audio systems to present an immersive film experience. The Augusta IMAX is a retrofit of one of the multiplex's existing theaters and will feature a smaller screen, but the experience will be the same as in large IMAX theaters, according to Jackson Myers, a spokesman for Toronto-based IMAX Corp.

"What we do is bring the screen closer to the audience, use our new digital projection and surround sound systems and acoustically treat the walls," he said.

Russ Nunley, the vice president of marketing and communications for Regal Entertainment Group, said the geometry of the theater offers the same experience in a much smaller space.

"It's really about how much of the screen is in the field of vision," he said.

IMAX Corp. and Regal Entertainment Group in March announced a partnership that would bring 31 new IMAX facilities to 20 markets. The Augusta IMAX is one of six opening this week.

Augusta is one of the smaller markets chosen for the upgrade. Mr. Nunley said Regal Exchange was selected because it has been financially successful and it made geographical sense. The closest IMAX facility showing studio fare such as Madagascar is at the Mall of Georgia in Buford, Ga., approximately 170 miles away.

Patrons can expect to pay more for IMAX screenings. Tickets for the IMAX Madagascar cost $13 for adults and $10 for children, compared with $9.50 for adults and $6 for children for a traditional screening.

Mr. Nunley said Regal sees IMAX as a premium movie-going experience, similar to digital 3-D presentations such as Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour .

Recent films released in IMAX format include The Dark Night , Speed Racer and Eagle Eye. Future presentations include The Day the Earth Stood Still in December and Watchmen in March. The Augusta Exchange IMAX was originally scheduled to open with Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, but its release was pushed back to July 2009.

Just My Opinion

Another reason this IMAX has been placed in an existing smaller theater "room" is because the ticket price is much higher and the theater owners have learned that not as many people want to pay the high price for that experience. This is just a high-tech gimmick to bring in more patrons. However, history has shown that, once the novelty wears off and people have experienced IMAX, then they're more reluctant to pay the increase. Ticket prices are high enough the way they are nowadays. And everyone complains, and rightly so, about the ridiculous concession prices. No wonder people sneak in munchies!

Home is my favorite place to watch a movie. The convenience of the "pause" button for snacks or bathroom trips is good. Also, I like being able to control the volume which often has periods of too quiet or too loud at the theater. Of course, when I must see the show on a big screen, I make time for a trip to the dollar theater. For extravagance, I load the family up for an all nighter at the Monetta drive-in. I've been to an IMAX show before and may go again sometime. It's just seems like a lot of money to watch a movie.

It's small, but the same experience? Yeah right, if so they would have smaller versions everywhere. I was in a hurry to see Madagascar Tomorrow, but after reading this I feel like Regal Exchange is just putting in a half [filtered word]ed version to make money. Not from this guy, now I decided I'll go ahead and just take my family to Fort Discovery on Saturday instead.

Great news! Maybe Regal can have access to IMAX archives which include some superb educational fare. By scheduling morning screenings and offering group discounts, the theatre chain can benefit children and educators.

I have not seen IMAX yet, and want to...but Madagascar? I will wait.

I've seen several IMAX films in "real" IMAX theatres. The last one was The Dark Knight. It is a pretty amazing experience and several of the full city scenes could induce a feeling of acrophobia. I'm not sure if this smaller version will provide the same effects but I've seen several home thetres, mine included, that offer a pretty realistic movie like experience on a smaller scale.

Oh, well now the smaller screen can not possibly give the view the same experience as the bigger screen - trust me. I've been to the Imax theater in Charleston, which closed due to lack of business, and the experience was worth a few dollars more in ticket price. I doubt though that it will be the same on a smaller screen.

Didn't your mother teach you not to sit that close to the screen! :)

hard times

$13 dollars is alot of money for one person to view a movie, especially when there's Netflix!

I wonder what other movies they will offer on IMAX. It would be cool to see the new James Bond movie on IMAX.

I'm gonna have to let the "independantly wealthy" or desperate teens pay $13 a ticket. I have three children...that would be $43 for tix alone! Sheez....I'll definitly be checking this one out on DVD express or Redbox....for a buck., heck, I could act out the movie for you in your home for $43...that's making $21.50 an hour...no prob!
