"To those Americans whose support I have yet to earn, I may not have won your vote tonight, but I hear your voices. I need your help. And I will be your president, too."

That's what Barack Obama said in his victory speech. We hope he means it.

Experience on the ground would indicate otherwise. Obama supporters have tried to silence conservatives at a Chicago radio station; Democrats are planning a return to the "Fairness Doctrine," which would rein in conservative speech; and newspapers that endorsed John McCain had their reporters kicked off Obama's press plane.

We hope Mr. Obama's soaring rhetoric is met with action, and that his supporters won't seek to silence dissent and conservative speech. There are definitely things we can learn from each other. The first step is to listen.

Trying to shift blame to "the angry left" is ridiculous. And talk about the need to listen - millions begged President Bush not to invade Iraq. "I get to make that decision, you don't" Bush sneered. Bush administration insiders told the press "We make history. You only eat our dust & write about what we do after the fact." That was arrogance & a succinct explanation why United States has earned the enmity of much of the world including from many of our natural allies in Europe. Bush & United States had the world's sympathy after 9/11. Bush & Cheney squandered that goodwill by using 9/11 as an excuse to start an unjustified war in Iraq & use torture. I, a U.S. citizen, don't respect or support that & neither do many people in foreign lands. The election of Barack Obama has purchased renewed goodwill toward America. We need to capitalize on that by changing U.S. foreign policy from unilateralism to one of cooperation. It is the radical right in this country that most needs to listen to reason. The rhetoric of The Augusta Chronicle & right wing talk radio in Augusta has been extremist. It is the radical right that needs to listen to reason. Unfortunately, that will not happen.

Trying to shift blame to the left is patently absurd when MONSTERS like Tom Delay, Karl Rove and Dick Cheney have held office and wielded capricious power during the last 8 years. They must be held to account. Read what Paul Krugman writes:

Why is there no mention of the reporters (e.g. Maureen Dowd - NY Times) that McCain kicked off his plane several weeks ago?

patriciathomas

Obama has a record of never compromising and never considering anything bipartisan. He's never had to. His house leader and senate leader are both extreme partisans and as a trio, they'll be very harsh to the center and right. However, the right has enough power to act as a roadblock for the most radical projects. Count on the hard left press to crucify every attempt to slow the dive toward socialism.

patriciathomas

randon, no one ever mentions Maureen Dowd in polite company.

Regardless of all the negative comments to the editorial, the statements are still fact. We will see how the King reigns and judge him on his administration of our government. The day after the election is the time to return to regular business. We can all remember we do have a voice everyday in our Congressmen and Senators to make sure we are heard.

It is unfortunate that the once honorable Democratic party has adopted liberalism as its governing philisophy and has embraced evil and immorality. Because of liberalism doctrine of moral relativism there is no evil that true liberals will not condone if it furthers the liberal agenda. Assuming that Obama is a true liberal with the agenda of unfettered abortion, homosexual supremacy and Marxist social and economic policies there is little reason to trust him.

I4PUTT

Obama finished up his campaign by moving to the center. Even he was aware that hiding his far left politics was a necessary decption of the American people. He is considered the most liberal Senator in the Senate. He is even considered more liberal than one Senator who admits he is communist. I think it is quite reasonable that all Democrats truly believe that he will change completely now that he is President. Remember, he has promised to balance the budget in his first term and he will have our troops out of Iraq in 16 months. I made a list of all his promises. I'll remind you of them as we go.

Did anyone read each of the 99 Senate votes on which the National Review's 2007 vote ratings were based? Here's a couple that I would consider common sense, yet deemed "liberal?"
Establish a Senate Office of Public Integrity to handle ethics complaints against senators. Barack voted YES.
Table an amendment that would require the Homeland Security Department to screen 100 percent of cargo containers entering the country within five years. Barack voted NO to tabling the amendment.
In regard to promising to balance the budget, Putt, you have the wrong candidate, according to Fox News, "Republican presidential candidate John McCain promised Wednesday to balance the federal budget despite the nation's deepening economic distress."http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/10/08/mccain-pledges-balance-budget-attacks-obama/

14PUTT, I seem to recall Obama coming down firmly on both sides of every position, depending on his audience. How can he go wrong? No matter the issue, he'll have video to show he supported or fought against it, depending on the expediency of the moment.

teharper, your post amounts to litle more than petty bickering unless you can add enough detail to put a legislator's voting record into an accurate context. A peice of legislation can contain provisions that make it unacceptable so we really don't know what a voting record means if we don't know the details.

teharper428

Patricia- Here's some reading material for you on Obama's legislative records:

for complete list of Obama's record:

Paws - It is true that a bill may contain many things that would alter how the legislator votes. Go into the bill itself and read for yourself. Base your decision on the details, not some talking head.

President Obama has the potential to be one of America's great Presidents and that is what scares the Hell out of the radical right. No one beleived W would be one of the greats at the beginning of his presidency. He was given the opportunity to do so on 9/11 when most of the world believed but what he proved is that he will be the worst ever. Say it with me: President Barack Hussein Obama! WOW!!! One of America's greatest Presidents? At least the World has Hope.

I bang my head into the wall every time someone invokes the terms "socialism" and "spread the wealth" in this case as if it carries inherently negative connotations. Really, it boils down to this: are you in the wealthiest 1% bracket? If the answer is no, your money isn't going anywhere. If the answer is yes, quit your whining.

jack

Cain, those of us who listen to reason sure as hell don't listen to you and your blathering.

jack

otpor, you are indeed deluded by Obama's lies about who ain't gonna' get taxed. He has said all along that the Bush tax cuts will be allowed to expire in 2010. THEN, check you take home pay. I didn't realize that $30K was "wealthy".

Oh, my, good ol' California. In a state of "emergency," asking the Fed govt for a bailout, and they approve $10Bn in bonds to build high-speed rail. But here's the funny part "Opponents also fear the measure might not pay for itself and require ongoing subsidies. An environmental group, meanwhile, has sued over the proposed route from the Central Valley to the San Francisco Bay area." Ongoing subsidies? For government-initiated passenger rail systems??? What could they POSSIBLY be thinking?!?! But hey, I really like the "liberal sacred cows collide" aspect of this: liberals who want to build commuter rail are going to be stymied by liberals who want to preserve the vital habitat of the Bearded Clam Wort, or some such...

johnsmith

Randon, calling Maureen Dowd a "reporter" would be the height of absurdity. You're not actually calling her a reporter, are you? The Obama situation concerned reporters, people who make their living on the front page of newspapers. Those people were ostracized because of the statements made on the opinion pages. Maureen Dowd only writes opinion pieces. Excluding a commentator is not the same as excluding the press. Even people who get their news from The Daily Show ought to recognize the difference between news and entertainment/opinion. Or are you going to call Limbaugh a journalist, now?

johnsmith

Here is the kind of thing that people are talking about when they're discussing "journalism": http://www.breitbart.tv/html/214673.html
