How many of us have gone up to a house trick-or-treating? This horrible tragedy could happen anywhere. My heart goes out to Tony Darrisaw and his family.
SUMTER, S.C. --- Tony Darrisaw was a "mama's boy" who loved to help out in the kitchen, said the mother of the 12-year-old who was shot and killed while trick-or-treating on Halloween.
Daphne Grinnell said Tony liked to be in the kitchen with her, The State newspaper of Columbia reported Sunday.
"He was a wonderful child," said Ms. Grinnell, who tried administering first-aid while talking to a 911 dispatcher. "He was just having fun, running from house to house trick-or-treating."
T.J., as he was called, died of a gunshot wound to the head at Tuomey Regional Medical Center shortly after the 8:30 p.m. shooting.
His brother, 9-year-old Ahmadre Darrisaw, was shot in the leg and the side, and his father, 31-year-old Freddie Grinnell Jr., was shot in the arm and grazed in the stomach, family members said. Both were released from Tuomey Regional Medical Center early Saturday, Sumter Police Chief Patty Patterson said.
Reports indicate T.J. had been shot 13 times.
"Blood was everywhere," said his mother, who had been waiting in the family's van when the shooting happened. "He was breathing and his legs was moving and when I pulled his mask off he had a bullet hole over his eye."
She was told by a 911 dispatcher to apply pressure to his head, but couldn't stop the bleeding.
"I started freaking out because nothing was happening," she said. She ran back to the van and found Ahmadre was inside and had been shot in the leg. A woman gave her something to tie around his leg.
Quentin L. Patrick, 22, is charged with murder and three counts of assault and battery with intent to kill, Chief Patterson said.
Mr. Patrick has multiple convictions for possession with intent to distribute, is a felon and is prohibited from possessing a firearm, police said.
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin McDonald said Saturday he will ask the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to investigate. Mr. Patrick and his live-in girlfriend, 19-year-old Ericka Patrice Pee, are being held at Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center.
They were home with her 2-year-old daughter and tried to leave after the shootings, after grabbing $7,500 in bundled cash, police said. Ms. Pee is charged with obstruction of justice.
"Patrick admitted to law enforcement that he fired his AK-47 weapon, emptying the weapon," Chief Patterson said. "Patrick advised law enforcement that he had been shot before and would not be shot again." He also feared being robbed, he told police.

And this is why gun laws won't help anyone. The felons and criminals will be the only ones with them. Only the innocent that follow the laws will be unarmed. So the laws keeping guns out of the hands of a felon didn't work in this case did it?
The mother said he was running from house to house, the news said they were coming home from a party and just picked that house because the light was on. They caught the girl living leaving with $7,500 in cash and it sounds as if she left the baby, drug deal.................I feel sorry for the children..
May God bless this family.
My prayers are with this family. There is NO excuse for this. If this man feared being robbed and shot, why did he have the light on? Trick or Treaters are only suppose to knock on doors that have a light which indicated this residence has candy. He needs to be sentenced for life. I don't believe this family just knocked on his door just because they were in the neighborhood.
I hope jail treats him nice. Maybe he will be another man's treat since he has some many tricks.
Bless this family, what a sad tragidy. Drugs ruining more lives...and innocent people caught in the middle.
WTF do you mean jewels?
Prayers to the family and all who loved T.J. I can not help but thank God that it was not my child. I can not fathom the horror that Mother went through and still feels today. As for the shooter, life in prison is too easy and cost taxpayers too much. The proper sentence would be death. He intended to kill whomever was on the other side of the door. He may not have intended to kill an innocent child, but he also did not care who was on the other side of the door. I am glad that the 19year old girlfriend "babymomma" had the presence of mind to gather the money and get out of dodge. May God have mercy on her for failing to aid and assist the injured. If it were truly accidental, I think she would have responded different, but maybe she just has respect for anyone. May she could not care less about the suffering or loss of life.
Unfortunately, there are real demons out there and this family found them. This tradegy will weigh heavy on the minds of many families as they look for fun on Halloween in the future.
How tragic! In two short weeks, beasts have killed two sweet, kindhearted boys in the most brutal manner possible. May God be with the families and friends of TJ Darrisaw and Julian King.
First of all my heartfelt sympathy goes out to TJ and his family at this horrible tragedy. Mr, Chin you know exactly what Jewels mean. Inmates on the inside don't put up with child killers, women killers and rapists. I hope you don't look as dumb as you sound. To me, you sound like you condone what that killer did to that child and his family.
a felon selling drugs, allowed to have a weapon, taking the life of a young man that would have saved someones life had he been given the opportunity to become a man! my deepest grief for the family and friends of this young man!
Time to take this thug off the streets permanently with the needle and his girl friend jailed for a long, long time.
