Principal resigns amid probe at former school

  • Follow Metro

The principal alleged to have been involved in "inappropriate relations" on the campus of Spirit Creek Middle School last school year resigned Friday, Richmond County Superintendent Dana Bedden said.

Gracewood Elementary School Principal Sharon McAlevy informed faculty Friday that she would be resigning effective immediately, Dr. Bedden told The Chronicle . She was not asked to resign.

Pete Garland, a retired Richmond County principal, will serve as interim principal of Gracewood for the rest of the school year.

Mrs. McAlevy's letter of resignation, dated Thursday, cited personal reasons.

An internal affairs investigation is continuing into the allegations, Dr. Bedden said, and while he would not elaborate, he said they are sexual in nature. He said he is unsure how many people might be involved or how often sexual acts might have occurred.

None of this would interest the school system had it not been alleged that it occurred on school grounds, Dr. Bedden said.

On Oct. 10, Ronnie V. Collins, the former school public safety officer assigned to Spirit Creek, was fired as a deputy from the Richmond County Sheriff's Office for not being truthful during his interview to get that job.

Mrs. McAlevy was transferred from Spirit Creek to Gracewood for the start of this school year.

The investigation began in early October. Dr. Bedden wouldn't speculate on how long it would take, saying that with each interview more people are implicated as witnesses.

The investigation is uncovering a story that sounds like something you would read in a newspaper or see on TV, he said.

A call to Gracewood Elementary late Friday afternoon seeking comment wasn't answered. Neither was an e-mail sent to Mrs. McAlevy's school board account.

I find the betrayal of a child's trust by their authority figures particularly distasteful. IMHO this scars children forever. Their rapists should be punished forever.

She "chose" to resign instead

She "chose" to resign instead of being fired. Yes, they can fire you before you are prosecuted.

I wonder if the facts of this case will ever be released, unfiltered. Has the remarkable deterioration of the RC schools had more then academic reasons? Stand by for further news.

Exactly, hypocrite. It is possible the sexual encounters were between consenting adults. Using the schoolhouse for a meeting place adds variety and spice.

Hey RCBOE, let's not sweep this under the rug. Criminal prosecution or at the very least, get the state involved and revoke licenses and certificates. Looks like Dr. Bedden is doing a good job... again.

The principal at

The principal at Craig-Houghton need to resign too. Internal Affairs need to investigate this principal. Something is wrong when you have a heavy turn over of staff and not one time look at the head. This principal is not administrator's material; I am not sure she belongs in the school system either....

I believe they are referring to relations between adults. That's why Bedden said that "none of this would interest the school system had it not been alleged that it occurred on school grounds."

Concerned4, why do you think RC is in the shape it is in now--incompetent administrators; the article states that it looks like something you read in a newspaper or see on TV--more like the Enquirer!!!!! And to do it in a school -- gross!!!!!!

BEFORE WE BEGIN TO CRITICIZE

BEFORE WE BEGIN TO CRITICIZE OR POINT FINGERS, LET'S TAKE A THOROUGH EXAMINATION OF OUR OWN LIVES AND THEN WE CAN DEFINITELY FIND PROBABLE CAUSE FOR CRITICISM OR POINTING FINGERS. There is nothing that is done in the dark that shall not come to the light. May God bring complete restoration to the principal and the security officer. Hats off to Dr. Bedden as he continues to complete the Richmond County's mission, teaching children AND ADULTS to become LIFELONG LEARNERS and PRODUCTIVE CITIZENS. Read and meditate on Deuteronomy 32:39. GOD IS IN CONTROL OF EVERYTHING! It's in our darkest hours that he brings healing, deliverance, and victory. For the one who spoke evil about the principal at Craig- Houghton, you need to neditate on God's word. HATERS killed Jesus and blessed him. When something is not satisfactory in your life, KNOW that God did it to bless you and take you to another level. Don't MISS YOUR BLESSING by talking about your enemy. Meditate on MATTHEW 5:44. I won't write what these scriptures say because you definitely need to study to show yourselves approved. Let's learn to comfort, edify, and exalt each other. The devil can't use anyone unless God allows him to so PEACE!

Yes, Mr. Garland loves the Lord and is gracious to all of God's people. He's praying and interceding for the principal, Dr. Bedden, you, the security officer, and me right now. He has shown an example of Christ in his daily walk. God wants us to be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord. We must walk in obedience to God's word and speak LIFE. DEATH AND LIFE ARE IN THE POWER OF THE TONGUE. May God continue to bring change for the GOOD to the Richmond County Board of Education staff and the citizens of the ENTIRE WORLD.
