Nothing's certain; remember Dewey and Truman in 1948

At this point in the election campaign with Sen. Barack Obama leading in the polls over Sen. John McCain and with Obama's supporters and the fawning media confident of his victory, there is a lesson in political history that all of us could learn from -- the presidential election of 1948.

Harry Truman, who ascended to the presidency upon the death of Franklin Roosevelt, was running for election against Tom Dewey, the Republican governor of New York. Truman was the undeniable underdog. It appeared the feisty president from Missouri with "the buck stops here" motto on his desk would be defeated by the charismatic New Yorker.

Dewey was the handsome, eloquent former district attorney who earned his reputation as a highly successful crime-fighter. An outspoken liberal Republican, he rose to the office of governor and now appeared certain to be elected president. Some early editions of newspapers in New York and Chicago even announced his victory.

Back in New York, the supremely confident Dewey stroked his mustache and with a smile remarked to his wife, "My dear, tonight you will sleep with the president of the United States." Mrs. Dewey, who at this point had her fill of her husband's smug, superior attitude, got up and left the room without saying a word.

As the night wore on and the returns came in showing President Truman to be the winner, Mrs. Dewey could not resist the opportunity to return to the room where now silent men continued to watch the ticker tape returns. With a smile, she asked her husband, "Tom, I'm a bit confused. Is Harry coming over here or am I going over to his place?"

It would be wise to vote for a Commander-in-chief who has actually commanded something though.

For the record, that was an anomalous poll: polling stopped two weeks before the election, so there will be no such scenario this time:Obama-Biden, the experienced team, will rightly win. Sen. Biden and Sen.Obama's other advisers use their brains in using their experience and learn from others whereas Sen.McCain rejects some of his own experience - his contemning the theocons and not being in favor of voodoo economics- for the tainted porridge of the neo- and theo-cons; he misinterprets his other experience. He is now with the worst elements of the Republican Party and probably would be worse than the bottom fisher Pres. Bush. [ Yeshuaisdead and was a fanatic [Yeshua? in the religious and values forum]. Sen. Clinton will be a major player, especially in helping Obama-Biden to achieve health care for most all. Sen. Reid and Speaker Pelosi will help them achieve success to further the covenant morality for humanity [ same forum] in the General Welfare [ Article II of the Constitution] , the key to our national Social Contract. Morality and reason will once again be welcome at the White House! Folks, we will see our Great Society to become even greater under the New Patriotism.
