Campaign exposes America's collective flaws

  • Follow Letters

America is a nation founded on "Christian" principles, but as the climax of the presidential race draws near, our collective flaws (racism, inequality, intentional misrepresentations) are highly exposed.

The misrepresentations and radical critiquing of Barack Obama's campaign is dismaying. When Michelle Obama said, "For the first time in my country's history, I am truly proud," she meant for the first time many Americans of varied ethnic backgrounds were coming together to support a candidate of color for president.

When Sen. Obama is referred to as Barack Hussein Obama, it is an attempt to instill fear and doubt.

One recent writer implied that Gov. Sarah Palin was righteous because her daughter will be supported in having her baby and that Sen. Obama would support an abortion if it were his daughter. How unfair! Sen. Obama has clearly stated he is personally anti-abortion, but legislatively pro-choice.

There is evidence all around us that some children are not wanted and are subsequently abused and neglected. I've personally worked with some of these children. It would be more beneficial to society for those espousing mean-spirited misrepresentations of beliefs to spend time assisting or adopting an unfortunate child. I'm proud of Sen. Obama for not saying anything negative about the Palin pregnancy.

We should vote for president after studying all the issues and not base our vote on skin color or other biased reasons.

Our Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag ends with, "one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." Maybe Michelle Obama felt that as a nation we have moved a bit closer to demonstrating the evidence of this belief, and not just saying it.

Maybe. But do we want to elect a President by having to assume so many maybes will go the way we think they will go? I don't know Michelle Obama so I can't read into exactly what she meant when she said she was proud of her nation for the first time in her adult life. Hussein just happens to be Barack's middle name - this was hardly a plot by the Republicans to name him this way. Barack Obama's own words about his daughters were: "I don't want them punished with a baby." We COUL interpret this another way but abortion seems to be the only thing he could have meant after setting up the hypothetical situation of his daughters being pregnant (a "mistake" he called it). Those "unwanted" children you worked with - can you truly say they would be better off dead? The Pledge would mean a lot more to Obama if he actually said it occasionally. But I could not agree with you more on: "We should vote for president after studying all the issues and not base our vote on skin color or other biased reasons."

".....How unfair! Sen. Obama has clearly stated he is personally anti-abortion, but legislatively pro-choice....."Juanita L. Burney.........Then Juanita, you will agree that it is just fine to be personally anti-slavery but legislatively pro-slavery?

I believe that Juanita's letter exposes more flaws than she realized or intended.

I don't recall ever reading that religion was the basis for our country. I know the founding fathers were of many religious persuasions but they didn't specify one religion or the other, they simply believed in religious freedom. PAWS I believe you misunderstand that although Obama is personally against abortion, he is required to support what his constituency expect of him, after all, he is elected as their representative.

BUT as a Christian, as Sen. Obama has so clearly stated he is, as a believer in Jesus Christ, if he is personally anti-abortion, how can he be anything else, even for his consitutents. That's like saying I'm for God but I'm also for Satan. That makes no sense at all. We believers are suppose to be in the world but not of the world and he should have learned that in Sunday School all these years. I do believe that a lot of American's are voting against Sen. Obama because of the issues he stands for and not because he chooses to classify himself as African American but there are many who can't see pass the idea that if someone is against Sen. Obama then it must be because he is black.

Being against abortion is a pro-slavery position.
