Moreno buzzing after big victory

BATON ROUGE, La. --- Knowshon Moreno is used to being showered with attention. As one of the most electrifying running backs in the country, it comes with the territory.

But the attention Moreno received this week leading up to No. 9 Georgia's game at No. 11 LSU wasn't the kind he wanted.

Somehow, Moreno's cell phone number was leaked and circulated throughout the LSU student body. He received so many calls and text messages that he had to deactivate his number.

On Saturday, Moreno gave LSU fans a new number to remember: 163. That's how many yards the redshirt sophomore piled up as the Bulldogs earned an impressive 52-38 victory at Death Valley.

"Yeah, they supposedly got my number," Moreno said. "It was nothing, though."

Apparently, it was enough to warrant a response from Moreno. After taking a toss sweep 68 yards through the LSU defense for a touchdown, Moreno ran to the LSU student section and put his hand to his ear in a gesture that resembled receiving a phone call. He continued the gesture as he ran off the field.

Last season, LSU fans flooded Florida quarterback Tim Tebow with phone calls and text messages after they obtained his cell phone number. Tebow used the same hand gesture as Moreno when he scored during the Gators' loss to LSU.

"That was just me having fun," Moreno said. "It just felt good to get points on the board and celebrate with my team."

Moreno's touchdown run in the third quarter put Georgia ahead 38-17, allowing them enough cushion to hold off a late charge by the Tigers. He also had a 47-yard run in the second quarter to set up Georgia's third touchdown.

"I was able to get a few big runs here and there," Moreno said. "It was just guys up front making big blocks. When you have holes like that, it's easy."

Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said that the kind of big-play ability Moreno exhibited goes a long way in helping an offense find success against a tough defense such as LSU's.

"When you play a good defense, which LSU has, you have to just try and get positive yards and stay committed to the run," Bobo said. "When you can take a toss sweep 70 yards, that's awesome."

Many of the Tigers' defensive players spent the week applauding Moreno's patience and ability to set up blocks better than most running backs in the nation. That was definitely on display Saturday.

Moreno followed a resurgent offensive line all game to pace the Bulldogs' offense. Aided by his two long runs, Moreno averaged almost eight yards per carry.

"It's awesome blocking for him because he's such a playmaker," said offensive lineman Clint Boling. "Anytime you have a back that sets up his blocks like he does, it definitely helps you as an offensive lineman."

After the game, a jubilant Moreno spent a considerable amount of time celebrating with the cluster of Georgia fans in the corner of the stadium. As he danced and high-fived the Bulldog faithful, it was apparent just how big of a win it was.

"It was just a spontaneous thing," Moreno said of the post-game celebration. "We're going to enjoy this one over the weekend and get back to work because we have a big one next week."
