Dettori starts day with victory

ARCADIA, Calif. --- Donativum held off a fast-closing Westphalia to win the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf by a half-length.

Ridden by Frankie Dettori, Donativum covered 1 mile on the turf in 1:34.68 and paid $13.60, $7 and $5 on Saturday at Santa Anita. Dettori later won the Breeders' Cup Classic feature on Raven's Pass.

Donativum is co-owned by Princess Haya, of Jordan.

BREEDERS' CUP MILE

Goldikova burst through a hole along the rail to win the $2 million race by 11/4 lengths.

The Ireland-bred filly's fourth consecutive victory gave Europe its second win at the season-ending championships.

Ridden by Olivier Peslier, Goldikova ran the distance on the turf in 1:33.40 and paid $5.60, $4 and $2.80 as the 9-5 wagering favorite, ending the string of long-shot upsets that began the day.

BREEDERS' CUP DIRT MILE

Albertus Maximus rallied from mid-pack, found running room on the outside, and won the $1 million race by a 11/4 lengths.

Ridden by Garrett Gomez, 6-1 shot Albertus Maximus covered the distance on the new synthetic surface in 1:33.41 and paid $14.60, $7.40 and $5.40, continuing the parade of long shots in the first three races.

Britain-bred Rebellion returned $16 and $11.20, while Two Step Salsa was another half-length back in third and paid $12.80 to show.

Trainer Vladimir Cerin earned his first Breeders' Cup victory, while Gomez rode his second winner of the two-day event.

BREEDERS' CUP TURF SPRINT

Desert Code overtook Diabolical in the final strides to win the inaugural $1 million race by a half-length.

Sent off at 36-1 odds, Desert Code ran 61/2 furlongs in 1:11.60 under Richard Migliore and paid $75, $30.80 and $21.

Diabolical returned $7.60 and $5.20, while Storm Treasure was another three-quarters of a length back in third and paid $9.20 to show.

BREEDERS' CUP MARATHON

Muhannak charged to the lead in mid-stretch and held off a big late run by Church Service to win the inaugural $500,000 race by a head.

Ridden by Patrick Smullen, Muhannak covered 11/2 miles on the new synthetic surface in 2:28.24 and paid $26.80, $10.80 and $6.20.

BREEDERS' CUP TURF

Conduit has won the $3 million race in an upset, defeating Eagle Mountain by 11/2 lengths.

The Ireland-bred colt gave European-based horses their fourth win on the second day of the season-ending championships.

Ridden by Ryan Moore, Conduit covered 11/2 miles in 2:23.42 and paid $13.60, $8.40 and $5.80 at 5-1 odds.

BREEDERS' CUP SPRINT

Midnight Lute rallied from last to first, winning the $2 million race by 13/4 lengths for the second consecutive year. Garrett Gomez rode his third winner Saturday, becoming the first jockey in the event's 25-year history to win that many races in a day. He also won the Filly & Mare Sprint on Friday, The win was the day's second for trainer Bob Baffert.

ATONED GETS WIN


Dogwood Stable's 3-year-old Atoned finally got his graded stakes victory Friday night at the Meadowlands when he won the Grade III, $200,000 Pegasus Stakes by a nose.
"This colt has run against the best horses in the country," said Dogwood President Cot Campbell after the win. "He's been a hard-luck horse, having missed five stakes wins by less than a length cumulatively. I'm glad he got to the winner's circle -- he certainly deserved it!"


Campbell said that Atoned would aim for the $1 million Sunshine Millions Classic at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 24 before returning to Aiken for a few months of rest and relaxation.
Atoned has purse earnings of $436,257, with three wins and seven seconds from 15 starts. The colt is trained by Todd Pletcher. He was ridden to victory by Chris DeCarlo.
Another Dogwood horse, Slambino, lost by the narrowest of margins in Thursday's John's Gold Stakes at Belmont Park, finishing second to Wishful Tomcat in a photo finish.
