Boeing strike forces supplier to make cuts

NORTH CHARLESTON --- A South Carolina supplier for Boeing Co. says it will lay off 50 workers, has dismissed 65 contractors and might temporarily shut down because of an ongoing strike at the Seattle-based airplane manufacturer.

Vought Aircraft Industries Inc. told The Post and Courier of Charleston on Friday that workers will receive benefits through November. Not including contractors, Vought had 300 employees on its North Charleston payroll two months ago.

Last week, Boeing reported a 38 percent decrease in earnings because of the strike that began Sept. 6.

College students hunt trash to clean up city

CHARLESTON --- A bag of cigarette butts is worth five points. But a bag of used batteries is better, as is a bag of dog poop. Both are worth 10 points in Charleston's annual dash for trash.

Several hundred college students swarmed through the streets Saturday in the litter scavenger hunt. The idea is to help clean up the city. Students will be on teams, and those who get the most points win prizes.

Spirit of S. Carolina returns after repairs

CHARLESTON --- The tall ship Spirit of South Carolina was to return to Charleston on Saturday night after visits this summer to Virginia; Washington, D.C.; New York; Massachusetts; Rhode Island; and Maine.

The ship was disabled when lightning hit the water nearby as it sailed off Rhode Island in July. The vessel was taken to Newport for repairs.
