AUGUSTA, Ga. - Vernon Shands Montgomery, 93, beloved husband of 75 years of Margaret Rhodes Montgomery, entered into rest on Thursday, October 23, 2008 at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Saturday, October 25, 2008 in the Lumpkin Road Chapel of Elliott Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Brandon Fulmer and Rev. C. W. Edwards officiating. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park. Russell James, Brad James, Barry James, Greg James, Shands James and Joel Brown will serve as active pallbearers. Barrett James, Ryan James, Curt Young and Chris Young will serve as honorary pallbearers. Mr. Montgomery had lived in Augusta most of his life and was a longtime member of Mann Memorial United Methodist Church. He worked as an engineer for Georgia Railroad from 1942 to 1980 and dearly loved his job. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. In addition to his loving wife Margaret, he is survived by two daughters, Betty James and LaVerne (Carl) Young, both of Augusta; seven grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Mann Memorial United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 PM Friday, October 24, 2008 at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, 2524 Lumpkin Road, Augusta, Georgia 30906, 706-868-9637.
