Faces of Survival: Gail L. Peake

  • Follow Metro

FAMILY: Husband, Roy; two daughters, Amanda, 13, and Sydney, 4; and two sons, Gregory, 12, and Kellen, 3.

OCCUPATION: Art teacher at A.R. Johnson Magnet High School

DIAGNOSED: June 8, 2006

WHAT HELPED: I had tons of support from my family, friends, church, and place of employment. The Breast Health Center at University Hospital was also a huge means of support. They educated me about my type of cancer and what would be my best route of treatment. The Breast Health Center also worked with my doctors during my time of treatment and surgery. The Pink Magnolias support group was also there for emotional support during my ordeal, and even to this day. Thanks to all of those who were there for me!

OUTLOOK: Physically my prognosis is good. I underwent chemotherapy and radiation after diagnosis, and a year after that I had a double mastectomy and reconstruction. I'm cancer free. I feel blessed that my cancer was found so early. I'm glad the Lord planned it that way, so I could be here to see my children grow up. I feel like there is so much more I was meant to do before leaving this Earth.

ADVICE: I would advise young women to do their self exams every month. If there is another female in your family who has been diagnosed, talk to your gynecologist about getting a mammogram before you are 40.

PERSONAL: My gynecologist advised me to get a mammogram at 35, because my mother is a survivor. My cancer was found on the first mammogram I ever had. Thank you Dr. Barry Goldsmith, you saved my life. I'd also like to thank Dr. Randy Cooper and Dr. Billy Lynn for everything they have done for me.
