Why single Powell out for criticism?

Just wondering, do you have to be pro-life to be a Republican?

Your lead editorial of Oct. 22 makes it seem that way. I want to point out there are plenty of pro-choice Republicans. To focus your main argument on Roe v. Wade turns off those Republicans and the millions of independents who care more about their pocketbooks in this horrible economy.

Also, while you attack Gen. Powell's beliefs and state he is a "RINO" (Republican in Name Only), you fail to mention the numerous other Republicans, including the longest-serving woman in the Wisconsin Legislature and the son of William F. Buckley, who have also endorsed Sen. Obama.

It is not one issue that makes a Republican. It is not one issue that makes an endorsement. It is a the overall view of everything that makes a candidate, which these distinguished individuals look at when making an endorsement.

"I want to point out there are plenty of pro-choice Republicans. To focus your main argument on Roe v. Good point: "...those Republicans and the millions of independents who care more about their pocketbooks" than they do about the slaughter of millions of unborn babies. What really irks those Republicans is that they know that they can't win an election without the pro-life/evangelical right voters. That's why Guliani would have been guaranteed defeat for the GOP in the Presidential race.

Until Republicans get out of people's bedrooms and out of people's private lives, they will continue to lose supporters.

I've had two Republicans in my bedroom for the past 36 years and it has produced several Republican supporters and taxpayers and they, in turn, are producing another generation of Republican supporters. (where's a smiley face when you need one)

Mr. Apple, you're not FROM here, are you? A Republican is a conservative with a long face and a short fuse who loves babies, guns and Jesus. Anything else is a liberal Democrat. We see everything in terms of black OR white and we are suspicious of anything that might start us to thinking. That's why we love the Chronicle and WGAC. Our annual Mediocrity Drive always tops last year's. They don't call Augusta "Number Two" for nothing!

Paws: Two Republicans in your bedroom? Yeah, that sounds like a Republican.

ITDoc

Long face and short fuse. Yeah, McCain supporters in Pittsburg and NYC are carving M on people's faces. I believe you are dyslexic.

There are many Repubs that don't like tax cuts and many that like abortions and many that feel social programs administered by government is good for our country, but for the most part they agree with the Repub agenda. They don't have to march in lockstep to be part of the party. Powell has very little in common with the Repub party. He's way left of McCain, who is very moderate. So what? Different strokes. If you don't like criticism, get in another line.

Brian Apple to minimize the Roe vs. Wade holocaust as a "turn off" is to openly declare just how desensitized the people of this nation have become...You are speaking of babies not a pile of trash to be taken out and thrown in a landfill somewhere...If you find this to be a turn off, a written letter, then I would like to suggest you attend a few of these murders and see if your tender sensibilities are similarly affected...

Bizarro

We all know Powell is a liar and should be tried with Bush for war crimes and lying about WMD such as nuclear weapons in Iraq. But now he is on board with Obama so not only a pardon but he can now be Sec of State under Obama. What a distinction! Now he can lie for Obama too. Funny how the left can go from demonizing you to lauding you as the best thing since ice cream in milliseconds-about the time it takes Obama to shift positions or policy with things go dicey (Wright is my mentor, my pastor of 20 years, and I dedicated a book to him but now I'm no longer affiliated or a tax credit for everyone under 250K-wait, wait, you have to work now too. I barely know Ayers, he is just some guy in the neighborhood (lives next door to Mr. Rogers I think) to well we have a working relationship. ACORN is a ...... The Dem voter must have ADD or just no brains to be so easily deceived.

Based on the conservative response here, the letter's good points are falling on deaf ears. When you narrow your party to appeal to a minority belief like pandering to the Christian right, you are going to have problems getting a majority of the vote. I applaud you for sticking and pushing your ethics, but if those ethics do not match the majority of the US population... it is simple math.

Notice Obama leads in the northeast. It is a good thing the republican party started pandering to the bible thumping moralists of the south. The south used to almost always vote democratic so I am sure there republicans started using "moral issues" as a strategy. Both parties are full of BS, and at this time I think the R party is a little more full of it. Until we get away from the party system and have all politicians think about the issues rather than vote along party/lobbyist lines things will not improve drastically.

tall2, The McCain supporter who was "attacked" and had a backwards "B" carved in her face MAY be a hoax. Of course, all the other hate speech and acts against McCain and Palin that you have not read about are true.

donnymack

Bizarro, you not of which you talk about General Powell. The good General was against King George's policies in Iraq even going so far as to say it is the wrong thing to do. Why do you think he stepped down from the band of criminals[Bush's Cabinet]? Of all of these accusations against Barok surely can't be as serious as you folks whine about or there surely would have been another Swift Boat Campaign. You are an not the kind of person that I would call a true American,to put down a decorated General that has served in many campeigns. He does not deserve to have hatred spewed on him by any lame brained moron. As much as I disagre with Mcain, I would never ,and have never denegrated his good name. The only supposed military person that I have ever denegrated is Bush because he never copmleted his military service, and that is called Desertion.

patriciathomas

imdstuf, of course the socialist left leads in the northeast. That's where they are from and that's where most that follow their philosophy move to. There are patches at ever urban area too where socialist congregate for social services. Obama leads in those enclaves also. Are you surprised?

donnymack, most people that follow politics know that Powell was the token on the staff of Bush, not even a little conservative and against everything Bush stood for. He was given a high post as long as he was a team player, but was "asked" to "step down" when it became clear he was interfering with national policy. He was replaced with someone of superior capabilities in matters of state. That in no way diminishes who or what Powell is. He's just not a Repub. Your anti-American comments about Bush are typical for such a partisan Dem. No one is surprised.

patriciaT, New Englanders are some of the most frugal people I've met. Fiscally, they are on par with the most fiscally conservative republicans. Heck, Massachusetts elected Republican governors from 1991 to 2007. The thing about the Northeast is they don't want government dictating their personal life. Something the GOP just can't let go of. This is where you guys need to do some soul searching as a party.

LaTwon

if new englanders want to live a certain way they should be allowed as well as any other state. vermont has a strong secession movement going. i hope they win. the monster is too big and out of control and looking to devour the whole world. my opinion is there is no larger intrusion into my life than threatening me with prison unless i turn over half of the fruits of my labors so that those opposed to my views can conduct their social experiments.

bdittle

LaTwon, do you dare vote libertarian? It is a shame that it is considered a throw-away vote by too many people.

jack

I admit that DIMocRATS do not claim to have high moral values and prove it every day-JFK, B J Cliton, "Family Values" Mahoney, Chappaquidic Ted, et al. The difference between Republicans and DIMs is that once exposed, we don't re-elect them.

LaTwon

bob barr is no choice. i will not vote for mccain or obammy. the table is set for obama to take us into full blown socialist facism. i think we could have another rebellion at least i think we should but the majority of the people are ignorant and afraid. they cling to their govt masters in dependence and sell their souls and the future of freedom for crumbs and 500 dollar tennis shoes. all nations are now enslaved with a debt they cannot service. argentina seized all retirement accounts to pay the bills.
socialism doesnt work unless enforced by a totalitarian police state. u cannot exist with 95% sucking the life out of 5%.

jack

Donnymack, the fact that you obviously didn't get very far in school in that you can't construct a coherent sentence says a lot about your blathering about Powell. Powell's "numerous campaigns" were Vietnam (me too) and Desert Storm (rear echelon). Powell has proven that he is no more a Republican than Joe Lieberman is a DIMocRAT. I lost respect for the man when he talked Bush 41 into stopping the war before completely destroying SH and his military resulting in 12 years of SH atrocities and acts of war aganst coalition forces (firing on our aircraft). He is a primary reason we are there now. Powell endorsed Nobama for two reasons-first, he is black and second, as a slap in the face to GW Bush, who did not pay him the proper respect as Sec of State.

bdittle

LaTwon, I hear your complaints about the current government, but don't expect me to join your revolution without an exit strategy.

LaTwon

death might be the only exit strategy there is. give me liberty or give me death? wasnt that an old saying?

Mr. Apple has the best LTE by a REPUBLICAN this year. Without a shadow of a doubt. McCain/Palin has already lost the female vote because of his remarks about women's health being extreme in last Wednesday's debate. The only way McCain/Palin can defeat Obama/Biden is if they get at least 70% of the male vote. Because the only people who will vote for the Republican are hardcore misogynists like those criticizing the LTE writer.

For all his military service, Powell is a disgrace to his nation by backing a pathetic excuse for an American ... let alone a President. Obama would not have even been allowed a Security Clearance in the military (or any other government job) but he can have access to some of our most important secrets if elected President. Way to go USA!

ITDoc

JIC: Yes, it may be a hoax. When that old woman said "I don't trust Obama, he's an Arab" John McCain grabbed the mic from her hand and immediately repudiated her claim as wrong. I have yet to see Obama do ANYTHING to rein in the agression being displayed by his supporters. In FACT, "I want you to argue with your neighbors. I want you to get in their face" is an UNDISPUTED quote direct from Obama. I'll stand by my point: Sen. Obama claims to want to unify America, when all his actions and words indicate otherwise.

HYPOCRITES 08

The only disgrace are those of you who even think you can Compare to Gen. Powell. Jack, your little time as an Infantry Officer does not compare. Put your 214 out there to be analyzed.
