What about prostate cancer?

  • Follow Letters

My urologist said he and his colleauges were frustrated by all the to-do about breast cancer. He said that every year, more men die of prostate cancer than women die of breast cancer.

Yet, they cannot get any of the "big cheeses" interested in those of us suffering from prostate cancer because it's a men's disease.

Sorry, but it is not because it's a mens disease. Women have mobilized and have founded huge foundations to generate money for research and to help victims. They organize walks and car washes and every imaginable kind of fund raiser. If the men would do the same, there would be a prostate cancer month, too. Of course it's needed, so you guys need to get on the stick and start raising public awareness.

Of course guys need to be tested and tested often for prostate cancer unfortunately many men do not feel the urgency to see doctors as often as women...Women are taught from early on that they have to have gynecological care and as such we are used to having to deal with these exams from puberty to death...That is just the way it is...Men on the other hand tend to wait until something happens before they seek advice or help...My hubby was one such man...He had prostate cancer, fought the battle and he came out a winner...He gets regular checkups now and pays more attention to his health...He also tells others to not wait but get check-ups early...Organize and spread the news men...

This seems to be an odd letter. I see prostrate cancer and prevention commercials on the teli every day.

Women will also have a new and probably better way to fight breast cancer soon when some local folks in South Carolina have a thermography machine. It can find cancer up to ten years sooner and uses no radiation. One study shows the existing method of mammograms increases cancer by 35%.

Thermography also shows the cancer source that can be fixed to prevent future tumors.

The information on source causes is at http://www.breastcancercured.com/index.html

Earl, instead of writing a LTE to a small city newspaper, join the cause. Put your money, time, and energy into it. Mobilize. That is why breast cancer gets it's deserving attention.

PT, the word is prostate. Prostrate is a position of the body on the floor. As for women "mobilizing", they are vvery good at that for any cause they believe in. Most men do not or will not. BTW, don't let your uroloigist "cut" until you find out if it can be treated with radiology.

One good thing is, nowadays you can get a simple blood screening rather than an invasive exam. They take a thimbleful of blood from your arm and within a week you know whether you need further testing or can forget about it for another year.
