American dream about fruits of labor

  • Follow Letters

I would like to see the paper print the names of the house members from Georgia who voted for the bailout bill and include their e-mail addresses.

I always thought the "American Dream" (buying a house, car, etc.) was for folks who worked for a living and could pay off their loans.

I am a firm believer in the principle that those who work deserve more than those who won't work.

What does the Rescue bill have to do with people who work, or don't?

a different drum

The "American Dream" now appears to be a government check in every mailbox and free healthcare. Tax the rich and spread the wealth around. We need CHANGE. Get the checks out in time for Christmas. (Just kidding) When democrats read this they will think it is a good idea. Then when you call them Socialist they don't understand why.

What does the Rescue bill have to do with people who work, or don't?........................it depends on where you work.......Wall Street vs Main Street.

Ga Values

None of our Republican Repesenatatives voted for the Bailout Of Wall Street but both of our SOCIALIST Senators votes for it. Saxby Chambliss (Socialist/RINO, Ga.) voted for the bill even though he had not read it after getting $1,322,000.00 from Bank, Insurance & Real Estate LOBBYIST. Did you get to go on the $444,000 AIG trip or just pay for it? FIRE SAXBY NOW, FIRE SAXBY HERE, PAY LESS..

I4PUTT

GA Values, I agree with you about Zaxby. But as bad as he is, there is no better choice available right now. We need to sponsor a better Republican. We also need to sponsor term limits.

Posted by BTurner on Wed Oct 22, 2008 5:24 AM .....>>>>>..... You're right BT. The "American Dream" used to be "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" but now life is denied to the unborn, "liberty" is denied to those who resist the homosexual agenda and "happiness" is now defined and dictated by the entertainment/advertising industry. B.Ho is right that America is not what it once was.

I was going to vote against Saxby becaue of all his stupidity lately, but then Martin started running that add about the fair tax that is a down right lie. I couldn't stand the thought of voting for some one that would twist the truth that badly to get elected so I will vote for Saxby, but only because I feel he is the lesser of two evils. I would really love to vote him out for becoming a democrat.

ITDoc

Achieving the "American Dream" involves risk. Sometimes you profit, sometimes you lose your behind. Our present and apparently future government has and will eliminate losses for those too stupid to invest intelligently.

I voted for Allen Buckley, the only CONSERVATIVE in the race, his home page is below. If it was down to the other 2 , I'd vote for Martin who is actually a moderate, Saxby is a socialist & will vote the way his paying LOBBYIST tells him. look at Saxby's record he is not a Republican, he is just an empty suit in it for the money.

What's the difference between Obama socialism and Bush socialism? Obama socialism would benefit people who actually need it.

Pay What U Owe

Can you not vote for Allen Buckley as a conservative and when no one gets a full 50%, elect the Repub in a run off? That would send a message to the Repubs but keep the Dem out of office. Only works if they have to do a run off tho. Term limits are iffy in the Senate since even two terms is 12 years. Hard to keep someone in line that long with a term limit. 3 terms is almost 20 and virtually impossible to correct. I cannot believe anyone who diss Martin for twisted the truth after what Zaxby did to (blanking on guy's name with no legs) by comparing him to Bin Laden. THAT was twisting the truth.

There is no difference in Obama socialism or Bush socialism. They're both wrong.

Socialism is socialism. Using American tax money to save the American economy doesn't seem to make much sense, but I guess it's just as good to spend it one place we don't want as it is another. The difference between Bush socialism and Obama socialism is that Obama's is just beginning and will bring this nation to it's knees.

justus4 you are the oldest living person around 1820. Slave owners have been out way before most of us living today!!! Stop fueling the burned out fire and live in todays world.

One of the most serious problems with Socialism is that it leads to hopelessness. Socialism levels the "playing field" to the point that mediocrity receives essentially the same reward as excellence. There is no such thing as a "classless society" and Socialism polarizes society into the classes of "producers" and "parasites" with very little incentive for the parasites to be anything different. What can be more hopeless than to see yourself as dependent on the government or to see a significant portion of what you make taken away and given to people who live as parasites.

patriciathomas

All socialist societies have one thing in common. Failure. Ours will be no different.

dashiel, how many jobs have poor folks offered you? Those who offer jobs are those who have gotten their education, worked hard even whne things were tough going bu persevered, and are those who provide the jobs that this country thrives on. Simply put, less taxes = more jobs. More taxes = less jobs. Why should those who pay no taxes get a "refund"? Welfare by any pother name is still welfare.

jack

Mu son' first job out of college was for a company that bought farm equipment from communist Romania. He was appalled at the mediocrity of the product as well as the hopelessness of the factory workers that produced the equipment. He almost got the communist factory director fired when he insisted on improved quality of the equipment he bought. The stasi (secret police) quit screwing with hm as well, or his quality would go up even further, he told the factory director, when asked.

Jack: Great post. As soon as they read "job" they're not listening.

CH

This government intervention is just one in a long line of actions that prove government is intruding into this "free market" a little more each day. Want more proof? How about minimum wage? Government has the right to tell me to provide a work atmosphere free from danger and harassment, but why does it have the right to tell me what I must pay my employees? If they don't like it, they can get another job. If they don't like what I'm paying, let them get the training and/or education they need to get a better paying job. And just watch, if Obama wins, and can't get his government healthcare program passed, he'll be pushing for employer financed healthcare for employees. Despite what the almighty Obama says, government isn't the answer to our problems. Government's poor performance history shows this all too well. Someone please show me just one government program that actually works efficiently. You can't because it doesn't exist!

Well, Jack, you've got me curious about the relationship between the East German Stasi and the old Romanian secret service and how they worked together. According to some Net sources, they eventually had some kind of falling out. Great research topic. No doubt, you are familiar with the old East German Trabant auto (the "Trabi") and how its factory managers were ashamed to be visited by western technologists because of the sloppy standards for workers who were guaranteed jobs in a Communist economy where everything was scarce, anyway. As recently as a few years ago, a lot of those cars were still on the road in the former East Germany, some of them having been turned into convertibles or pickups. Apparently, there was some trendy reverse snob value attached to them.

Terry Johnson, most Americans believe strongly in the work ethic. The real problem in regard to the American dream is that so many hard-working Americans have been duped into handing that dream over to somebody else, who then accuses them of being stupid or lazy.

CH

Lowell, I hope you're right, but I question that most Americans believe strongly in the work ethic anymore. Maybe I'm getting cynical, but instead of seeing more and more people trying to work, getting the training and education they need, I see more and more with their hand out and supporting leaders who tell them to act that way. Our current tax system that penalizes hard work and thrift and rewards laziness and immorality also has a lot to do with our problems. When I was stationed in Korea, where the average factory worker labors 10 hours a day, 6 days a week, I saw incredible production and growth. The people didn't grumble when quotas were posted, they took pride to reach those quotas. Too many Americans seem to have no pride in themselves now, and work is just something you do when you can't manipulate the system to get others to pay for your lifestyle. Obamas promises of "redistributing the wealth" only encourage this. God help our country!

CH, I'll admit there is a twisted world view among a few of our young people who have been inexcusably spoiled by their parents. Too many think they can coast through school, or drop out, then make tons of money. Some play computer games rather than developing valuable technological skills. Many never read. From all reports, even some medical students have regressed to a grade school level by getting Mama involved in the grading process. Way too many people, especially the young ones, are under the false impression that they are financial whizzes. Yet, America will not go to Hell. The McCains and the Palins will tell you that there is a vast lazy, immoral (?) underclass, even while insisting that good American working-class family values are strong. Well, Obama's family values are every bit as strong as McCain's, and in my estimation, more credible. Besides, his kids are cute as buttons. Now think about the hundreds of Americans you know who work 10 or 12 hour days. not to meet a quota, but to earn a little more clean lucre or, just maybe, to do their best in their calling. Those are the Americans I'm talking about. Why redistribute misery? Good economies spread wealth.
