Whites need to adjust to new reality

  • Follow Letters

The presidential campaign has incurred fear on the part of conservative white Americans in general, and deeply entrenched hostility on the part of white southerners in particular. The fear is that an African-American just might win the presidency.

White Americans have not learned that life brings about changes that they cannot always control. They were completely taken aback by the emancipation of slaves and have spent their lives trying to psychologically make amends for this "mishap."

Women are boldly having children without marriage; interracial relations are springing forth -- outright egregious behavior.

I watched aghast as John McCain tried to belittle Barack Obama in the debates. In the first debate, he barely acknowledged Obama's presence by refusing to look at him even when he was asked to do so by the moderator. McCain repeatedly stated Obama didn't understand several issues.

The final outrage was when McCain showed his hostility and disrespect by referencing Obama as "That one!"

McCain is an undisciplined anachronism. In a time when just about every country has access or is trying to develop use of nuclear weaponry, he figuratively keeps his finger on the button to prove that we have the military strength to crush anyone we consider a threat.

Moreover, the American people do not understand the mind-set of foreigners, particularly of Middle Easterners who do not intend to let us ride roughshod over them. This is no longer an era of cowboys and Indians using antiquated firepower like bows, arrows and rifles. Many Third World countries are prepared to use nuclear weapons, so we had better do as Obama suggests: talk to them and treat them as equals rather than as "those people" as McCain treats Obama.

The way in which white Americans treat people of color in this country is the way they treat them internationally, and that's not an ideal negotiating tactic.

Sameera V. Thurmond, Augusta

It is obvious that a young

It is obvious that a young person with little understanding of the world wrote this piece. As I do agree that US diplomacy has been heavy handed at times in the past, there is no way that we can treat other countries as our equals, as there are none. If the third world wants to be our equal then let them feed their own people and let us stop having to give away hundreds of millions of dollars in foreign aid every year. If the third world wants to be our equal then let them stand up to tyrants like Hitler, Stalin, and the new breeds of nut jobs throughout the world. If the third world wants to be our equal then we should no longer allow education visas for foreigners who want to change or destroy our society and then stay after they promised to go back to their own countries. FINALLY, IF THE THIRD WORLD WANTS TO BE OUR EQUALS, THEY DARN SURE BETTER BE AWARE THAT IF THEY USE NUCLEAR WEAPONS AGAINST THE US THEN WE WILL TURN THEIR SOIL INTO GLASS. I do not look forward to the new generation of politicians who never studied history in school (cause learning was for suckas and Uncle Toms) and are now dooming us all to repeat it.

His angry wife is finally

His angry wife is finally proud to be an American? he didn't know Ayers was a terrorist? He never heard his preacher say ignorant things? He had nothing to do with ACORN? He only lived in the neighborhood triangle with sweetheart deal giver and Farrakan? He refused town hall meetings for kid glove debates hosted by biased media (and we saw why when he showed his redistribution plan to a simple plumber asking a simple question)? He demeans a plumber (which shows how he will deal with ordinary hard working not looking for a handout) yet will not demean Rangall who didn't know he owed IRS many thousands? Wouldn't wear a flag pin until pressured to? Will sit down probably in oval office IF elected with dictators that defy UN? He is either confused with his dates and has yet to produce a birth certificate? He will not confront Gay Franks, Chris Dodd, or Reid as well as Polosi concerning their scandals? Investors are already showing him he won't have their money to redistribute!
If he does get elected remember the people wanted Saul and it took David to fix his mess! Liars aren't worth looking in the face and until he tells the truth I can't accept him. I do unto others as!

We dumb southeners have

We dumb southeners have nothing to fear but fear itself and that does not include a smooth talking lawyer that stumbles without a teleprompter and says you know uh every other word.
Simply to vote for someone without reason other than their race or gender is about as dumb as Whoopi Goldberg making a stupid remark to McCain about needing to be worried about slavery! Of course she said your man was sexier in person than she thought. Perhaps the republicans can use the filibuster on him if elected like the democrats did Bush if you are smart enough to know what I mean. Blame the filibusters not Bush. Lincoln was a republican that split the nation over making all people free. That was a long time ago so you have a lot of catching up to do and that includes being thankful for the republicans throughout History. Take a little time to enlighten yourself and you'll get over your anger!

Who cares what color he is -

Who cares what color he is - most don't. Of course some will, but that works both ways as many blacks who have never voted are registering just to vote now and of course some whites would never vote for a black person as some blacks would simply choose a black person for the color of his skin. All of these above described individuals, both white and black, are insecure, uneducated, idiots who have some racial bias at the very least and really shouldn't be voting to begin with. Give me Alan Keys, Colin Powell (even though he supports Obama), etc. and I would gladly support them over Hillary Clinton or any other white person with socalism views such as Obama. We don't need a president who wants to "distribute the wealth" as this is not what America is all about. We all have the right to acheive whatever we can and should be able to keep it or donate it as we see fit. The government is too big as it is and even Bush did a poor job in keeping it under control, especially once a Democratic Congress was in place. With a democratic president, congress and house, one thing is for sure....the majority of these individuals will be one timers as the public begs for the Republicans back

As I've said before, I no

As I've said before, I no longer live in Augusta. I live in a region of Ga. that is probably 95% white. We recently had an Obama rally with appx. 700 people attending. White and black communities uniting as Americans. Go Obama. I have to agree with you though Ms. Thurmond, there are many conservative whites who are scared to death of a black president and cannot face the fact that he is smarter than they ever thought about being. My husband had a verbal altercation this morning at the local breakfast hangout, not the first one he has endured for being an Obama supporter. This time, it was over Gen. Powell's endorsement of Obama. Really you bunch of predjudiced folks on this blog, how could anyone be worse than Pres. Bush? I sincerely hope that all of these hate filled posts are the work of just a few people using numerous names. Surely the CSRA has not changed that much since I left in the 90's. I don't remember all this hate, do you all belong to skinhead groups or militias or something? You will not be blessed for your hatred.

If you don't vote for the man

If you don't vote for the man who doesn't look like the pictures on the dollar bill you're a racist. If your opinion about socialists is "anti-Obama" you're a typical white person. If you feel taxing the job creating part of the nation in a time of financial crisis is wrong you're a racist. If you won't speak up for the wrong headed, inexperienced marxist that keeps as much of his past secret as possible, you're a racist. If you're not enamored with the eloquent man who's embraced his black color, you're a racist. I know all of this is true because Obama has told me in his endless campaign speeches....all of which seem to be based on race or socialism.

IF Obama becomes the first

IF Obama becomes the first black President and is as bad as those opposed to him think he will be, won't that set BACK black progress? Therefore, shouldn't blacks look at him very critically to make sure he is the RIGHT first black President? Or is just being black enough?

Sameera, Thank you for

Sameera, Thank you for showing all of Augusta that one need not be white to be prejudiced, racist, and shallow. Before tossing around this cliche about southerners being racists perhaps you should look around your fair city. The racially mixed couples you talk about are here in this bastion of bigotry and yet no one burns crosses on their lawns. How can this be? Then travel to the "Great White North" and see how much racism you can find. It's there in abundance. Then travel to the wonderful Middle East and see how well Shia and Sunni get along. Then go to Europe to see how Poles and Chechs are treated among the elite. Finally, there is one word you used to describe John McCain that NO ONE would even think of using against this hero: "undisciplined". How dare you? You racist, ungrateful one!

You refer to Barack Hussiene

You refer to Barack Hussiene Obama as African American. He has a white mother so that makes him half black, mixed whatever it's called. He is just as much white as he is black , but he chooses to ignore the fact that he is also white. Now who is racist?

Anyone who would openly

Anyone who would openly attack White Conservatives and be accepted as righteous for doing so is the epitome of racism. You Thurmond are just such an example...I personally fear nothing or no one...What I have a problem with are racially biased "so called righteous" creatures as yourself and your "savior" Obama"...

Ms Thurmond, too bad everyone

Ms Thurmond, too bad everyone has the RIGHT to vote for whoever or whatever they want to INCLUDING you. Black, white, red, yellow or mixed combos---all have lied, stolen, killed for $ and power, and if you think Obama & friends are any different POTENTIALLY than Bush-McCain & friends, our you-I and friends, then you will find out for yourself the hard way.
So far [except for 1861-1865] US Presidental elections, transfers of power have been mostly accepted and bloodless----BUT IT IS 2008, 70 years after re-established Israel, the "sign & wonder...FOREVER" of Deut 28:46 [1500 BC or so]. If not soon, is 1 day closer this AM that yesterday. Glad the truth has been put in writing for us all. Pretty darn impressive how is all setting up right nicely.

I have nothing against Obama

I have nothing against Obama as a human being, I just happen to be a Republican, if a qualified African American republican was running I would vote for him/her in a heart beat, and yes Ms. Thurmon believe it or not there are black republicans.. and for you to write a letter assuming that whites in the south are the only ones that are predjudice is ridiculous, this predjudice thing runs both ways. As an American citizen I will always vote for the person I feel is most qualified to lead this country, I will never cast a vote based on race or sex, that is the way it should be, however in this election this will not be the case for alot of people. Obama may get elected and if he does I hope that he lives up to all the hoopla. I don't think that Obama is the great black hope just like I don't think McCain is the great white hope, they are just two men from different parties running for office and come January 2009 one of them will be sworn in as leader of this country.

What is setting up nicely

What is setting up nicely deeo...The idea that a inexperienced black man is seeking the highest office in the nation or the idea that black people will somehow rise up annihilate the white man and do it all in the name of Obama "savior" of the black Muslim world? Which is it? That letter may address the White Conservative but I would like to point out there are a great many black, browns and reds that are Conservative Christians who have our faith firmly anchored to the Rock of Ages Jesus Christ...We will always win no matter what this election brings forth...
