Headless horseman will ride around history park

The headless horseman will ride in North Augusta's Living History Park on Saturday.

About 8:15 or 8:20 p.m., the story of Sleepy Hollow will be re-enacted as part of the Spirits of Hallowed Eve, said Lynn Thompson, the park chairwoman.

Tours of the park will begin at 6 p.m. Patrons will be taken into the park in a horse-drawn wagon. They will walk to stations, guided by lanterns, and meet ghosts of the Colonial era and hear ghostly tales.

The tours last about an hour, and the walk is about a half-mile.

Refreshments of marshmallows and apple cider will be served. The highlight of the event is the telling of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, which will be played out to the light of a large bonfire.

"You can't do Sleepy Hollow without a bonfire," Mrs. Thompson said.

Although the event is free, reservations are needed to spread attendance out over the evening.

About 600 people attended the inaugural event last year, Mrs. Thompson said.

"We wanted to do something totally different," she said.

Most of those who attended said it was a unique program, and they enjoyed it, she said. In the case of rain, the event will be canceled.

On Friday evening, there will be a wine and spirits 18th century-style dinner. It will feature wine and pumpkin ale and three entrees. It begins at 6:30 p.m. and costs $40.

Entertainment will be related to the ghostly theme of the weekend.

"There will be full entertainment. It's going to be even better on Friday night," Mrs. Thompson said.

For Friday dinner reservations, call Mrs. Thompson at (803) 279-7560. For reservations for Saturday's program, call Pam Schmidt at (706) 832-4723.
