Dr. John Bradley bid farewell to the Aiken County school board Tuesday at his last meeting as a board member.

The 16-year veteran of the board chose to retire rather than seek re-election this fall. He joined the Aiken County School District in 1960s as a school psychologist, eventually moving up to district-level administrator. School board Chairwoman Christine Sanders presented him with a clock in appreciation of his services.

The school board also heard external review plans from Ridge Spring-Monetta Elementary/Middle School and Wagener-Salley High School principals. The schools must create a school- improvement plan this year to meet No Child Left Behind standards. Both plans included more teacher planning sessions and a focus on improving test scores.

During the public participation section of the meeting, resident Vicki Simons praised Superintendent Beth Everitt for building relationships with the business community and her visibility in the schools. Mrs. Simons also asked the school board to include more updates, including a districtwide newsletter, on the school Web site.

The next Aiken County school board meeting is at 7 p.m. Oct. 28 at 1000 Brookhaven Drive.
