Negative ads come as rivalry heats up

ATLANTA --- With less than three weeks left until Election Day, Georgia's once sleepy U.S. Senate race has turned bitter as both sides have gone on the attack with tough new ads.

Amid signs that the contest is tightening, Republican incumbent Saxby Chambliss unleashed a pair of television spots, one linking his Democratic opponent Jim Martin to "liberal Democrats" in Washington. The second targets the former state lawmaker's career in government.

"Jim Martin's record proves you can't trust Jim Martin," the ad intones.

Mr. Martin has been on the airwaves for weeks hammering Mr. Chambliss for helping to create the nation's economic mess. This week, he got help from the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, which poured more than $500,000 to put up an ad criticizing Mr. Chambliss for "sponsoring a 23 percent national sales tax on nearly everything you buy."

The Democrats are referring to the "fair tax," a plan touted by some conservatives that would replace the income tax with a national sales tax. Mr. Chambliss, who co-sponsored legislation proposing the tax, on Thursday called the ad "misleading."

The caustic tone on both sides reflects the stakes.

A loss by Mr. Chambliss could help lift Democrats to a 60-vote majority in the Senate. Unseating him would also be sweet revenge for Democrats, some of whom still nurse a grudge over his defeat of Sen. Max Cleland in 2002.

MONEY TO SPEND

Jim Martin's campaign raised more money than Saxby Chambliss during the most recent three-month period. Mr. Martin took in more than $1.3 million from July through the end of September to Mr. Chambliss' $1.1 million. But Mr. Martin has spent most of what he raised, while Mr. Chambliss still has $1.2 million in the bank heading into the campaign's final weeks.

Ga Values

Below are the contents an email sent me by a friend in Ganesville. The real question here is does Saxby Chambliss(Sociallist/RINO, Ga) understand the Wall Street Bailout Act he signed?? I understand he has not even read it. He says there was no PORK in the Taxpayer Ripoff, what do you call a $197,000,000.00 subsidy for Puerto Rico Rum?? Apparently theEditors of the AC do not know what pork is because they pointed out a number of items they thought were PORK. Guess, that what's what the Lobbyist SAXBY works for told him. ....................."All 3 candidates were supposed to appear on our local radio show and take questions from callers. Saxby didn’t want to face tough questions so he called in 20 minutes late. It didn’t leave any time for many questions. The host refused to ask him about his son’s lobbying actions and the entire segment boiled down to Saxby telling us that “the aveage voter didn’t understand the bailout bill” and that there was “no pork in the bill.”

The DSCC is very strong in pointing out that the proposed 'fair tax' is a new 23% tax, but I see nothing about the 'fair tax' replacing existing taxes and generating revenue from current tax evaders (like those working for cash, drug dealers, illegals, etc)

Saxby Chambliss is a LIAR. He once represented the middle Georgia area in Congress. The only problem was he did NOT live in the district. He chose to run there in lieu of the area he lived in because he knew he could not win his own district. He claimed an apartment in Macon while campaigning then dropped the lease immediately after winning. A LIAR THEN AND A LIAR NOW. THROW THE LIAR OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
