ERLENE YARBRAY
FAMILY: Husband, Gerald Yarbray; two daughters, Tonya Roberts and Shanika Turner; one stepson, Gerald Yarbray Jr.; three grandsons, Trey Roberts, 6; Jayven Roberts, 3; and Jordan Lampkin, 18 months
OCCUPATION: Retired sales associate
DIAGNOSED: June 1, 2000
WHAT HELPED: My faith; prayers from church members, family and friends; and staying positive.
OUTLOOK: I have been cancer-free for eight years.
ADVICE: Put God first and let your faith work for you. Always have a positive attitude even if you are having a bad day. Turn it over to the Lord and he will work it out.
PERSONAL: I have a strong family history of breast cancer -- my mother, grandmother, sister, aunts; most of the women in my family got cancer before age 40. As I got older and I passed 40, I thought that maybe it had skipped me. I found my lump while doing my monthly breast exam, two months before I turned 49. I had just had a mammogram two weeks before that showed everything was normal.
SHANIKA TURNER
FAMILY: Son, Jordan, 18 months
OCCUPATION: Sterilization tech, Center for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
DIAGNOSED: Oct. 10, 2007
WHAT HELPED: My faith in God and my family. My son was only 6 months old at the time, and I knew I had to get through this for him. Knowing that my mother was a breast cancer survivor gave me the support I needed. My sister, Tonya, took care of my son when I couldn't. I also couldn't have made it through without my friends, co-workers and my employer, and an excellent team of doctors.
OUTLOOK: Good! I have gone through chemo, a double mastectomy and radiation. I will have reconstruction surgery in the near future.
ADVICE: Put God first. Stay positive! Humor helps as well. Let others help you even if you feel like you don't need any help.
PERSONAL: I always knew this could happen to me because of my family history, but I never imagined it would happen at age 29. If you find a lump -- no matter your age -- get it checked as soon as possible.
