People expect too much of government

  • Follow Letters

The former sacred cow of the Democratic Party, JFK, in his inauguration speech said "ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country."

Now the new Democratic sacred cow, Barack Obama, says he's going to make sure nobody loses their homes, all the fat cats on Wall Street will be fired, cut taxes for people that don't even pay them, give everybody health care, and I imagine the next step will be using Dr. Suresh's formula to give everyone super powers (TV show Heroes reference).

People have come to expect far too much from the government. Why? Because they have been led to believe the government has an obligation to give them more.

I want to vote for someone who believes it is none of the government's business who gets loans and who doesn't. I want to vote for a man or woman who really couldn't care less if you buy health care. I want to vote for someone who will make sure we have a strong national defense (and when necessary strong offense) and good police force, who will make sure employers pay a fair wage to legal U.S. citizens, brutalizes criminals and stays out of everything else.

I want a president who will answer a debate question like "what are you going to do for me" with something along the lines of "A lot less than is being done for you now; the world doesn't owe you a living."

In short, I want the president to do his job and stay out of things that shouldn't be his job!

Unfortunately that person will not likely gain any political credibility until after the fall of this republic. Until that time comes, I guess I will just have to cling to guns and religion.

Michael D. Buchanan II

So, Mr. Buchanan, you want to

So, Mr. Buchanan, you want to vote for the person who wants the government to intrude in our lives. Obama is clearly the less government candidate that has a legitmate a shot at winning. That is why I am voting for the Chicagoan.

The LTE proves Conservatives

The LTE proves Conservatives miss the point. The national Flood program is a federal run program that people pay insurance premiums for flood coverage. If Katrina victims paid flood premiums why should they expect the government to pay? Everyone that has a job pays FICA & SS, but they shouldn't expect anything after having paid? Isn't overturning Roe vs Wade the same thing as asking GOVERNMENT to legislate abortion? Aren't the current Bush corp tax cuts set through 2010 asking the GOVERNMENT to help the wealthy? I know Conservatives feel they are giving money to people that don't pay taxes, but isn't that a half truth? In the mid-west & south the federal govt pays just as much GOVERNMENT money to subsidize white farmers regardless of their income as we spend on subsidized housing. Read the Combined Federal Funding Report before posting such stupidity. The way I see it...Democrats use funding to feed & house our poor, Conservatives use funding to advance their agenda. There is no such thing as NO GOVERNMENT. It wasn't that long ago Conservatives wanted to put SS benefits in the stock market. What if Democrats agreed? Thank God for Obama/Biden!!

Of course the folks who

Of course the folks who expect the government to continue to support them even go so far as to give them a "raise" will cast their votes and utmost loyalty to that egomanical Obama and the power brokers behind him...That is not what this government intended but it is what the enemies of this nation have been waiting and watching...They are happy, you who believe in Obama may think you see a huge golden pot of gold at the end of the rainbow but your going to be sadly mistaken when the glitter of the day is gone. Your going to awaken to the reality that your only puppets yourselves in furtherance of Obama in his quest for power and fortune...And then what?

Every time personal

Every time personal responsibility is mentioned, the goofy left start crying NAZI, NAZI. This system seems to work for the truly stupid, but adults just shake their head and think the fool will eventually grow up. The truth is that as long as the nanny government buys votes by pushing the socialist agenda, there's no reason for them to mature.

I guess brimis has been living in a hole in the ground. The only one sticking to the party line are the so called Conservatives. All they can do is point fingers at the other guys. Have you asked yourself these questions? When they have both the Senate and Congress alone with the White House, why did they not do something with Roe-V- Wade? Why did they not do anything about Illegal Immigrants? Why did they not do anything about Health Care? Answer: They do not care about those issues until election time.

Maybe since the Democrats

Maybe since the Democrats have been ushering us along this path for decades Hypo.. Christians, Republicans and Democrats alike, have sat back content to be in our own little swaddled cocoon of sorts believing if we were quite and stayed within the secure confines of the church we would all stay safe...Never to venture to far out of the walls we built for fear some of the world would rub off on us...Well now we are paying for our blind eyes and the world has entered through the back door to corrode the very foundations of a moral society... We have allowed prayer to be taken out of schools and public hearings. We have allowed mass murders of babies on such holocaust proportions and not bat an eye when faced with the sheer numbers of the murders...We have allowed the subtle immoral language, films and movies, dress and a desensitization of emotions concerning the complete disregard of human life...These have become the norm instead of the abnormal behaviors of the last few generations...These super-liberalized behaviors are increasing as God and His laws are being labeled as hopelessly out of date as well as believers who uphold these laws are labeled as "haters of mankind"....

Top 2 issues for Americans

Top 2 issues for Americans according to the Washington Post:
1. Economy, 2. Healthcare. Tope 2 issues coming from the right-wing: 1. Obama's an A-rab, 2. Obama's a terrorist. Great job right-wing. Not only are you stupid, you're effective as well. That is, for us liberals wanting to address the concerns of the people.

I know Conservatives feel they are giving money to people that don't pay taxes, but isn't that a half truth? In the mid-west & south the federal govt pays just as much GOVERNMENT money to subsidize white farmers regardless of their income as we spend on subsidized housing." Um, no. Corporations do not pay taxes. If you double corp taxes, you simply oblige the corp to pass along that cost of doing business, along with every other cost, to the consumer. At the same time, you artificially make investment in that corp less attractive than an unburdened investment (like govt bonds), thus making govt, which only consumes wealth, a 'better' investment than industry, which CREATES wealth. A lowered tax burden is NOT a subsidy; high tax is ALWAYS a consumer burden. re: Farm subsidies, as a typical liberal, YOU must first consider skin color...liberal racism once again. If I stipulate that all farmers are white, do I get a gold star both economically AND racial-sensitivity-wise, if I oppose ALL subsidies to ALL industries? Because, as a true conservative, that's my position.

cparker "The national Flood

cparker "The national Flood program is a federal run program that people pay insurance premiums for flood coverage. If Katrina victims paid flood premiums why should they expect the government to pay?" Natl Flood Insurance is a SUBSIDIZED pool for marketing flood insurance. cparker, don't you proceed to rant about subsidies...? Here's the point: Govt FORCES people to hire a closing attorney when buying a house. Might be a good thing, might be bad, point is, it's a fact. You, as buyer, must hire an attorney at a cost of several hundred $ to explain the purchase to you in terms you understand. Having done that, people go on NPR and CNN and lament, "I signed the papers, but I DIDN'T KNOW that it meant that my payment could go UP!" And the govt provides subsidized flood insurance to all homeowners, but people who bought, not only homes they could not afford, but homes costing THOUSANDS per month in mortgage, could not be bothered to pay $500 PER YEAR for flood insurance. And they can actually SEE the water that is higher than their house. But, once again, "they didn't know." The question we conservatives ask is, "what ARE we responsible for?" Besides paying for your mistakes, o'course

cparker "Everyone that has a job pays FICA & SS, but they shouldn't expect anything after having paid?" Of course they should expect something after having paid. A) If we could limit payments to only those who have PAID, SS would not be in quite such bad shape. B) You do know, don't you, that there is no requirement that Congress appropriate $ to pay those benefits? Write this down, so when it happens, you'll remember where you heard it: ENTITLEMENT SPENDING WILL NOT ONLY FAIL TO GROW @ INFLATIONARY RATES, IT WILL DECREASE OR DISAPPEAR WITHIN OUR LIFETIMES. Really, write it down. There is literally not enough money in the country to pay for these programs for the foreseeable future, even if govt takes every single dollar. C) If these programs are so INCREDIBLY fantastic, why do they have to be MANDATORY? I mean, nobody had to force anyone to buy shares of Google at $50 each... Why can I not CHOOSE (y'all are the party of CHOICE, right?) to opt out of both the 'investment' and the 'magnificent' return? Pay attention to that question; you'll be asking it about National Health Care in a few years, nanny-staters...

Sorry to give cparker so much

Sorry to give cparker so much time, but she or he managed to distill so much liberal lunacy into one post:"Isn't overturning Roe vs Wade the same thing as asking GOVERNMENT to legislate abortion? " Um, it's the liberals who insist that "gov't legislate abortion," on the federal level. You do know that the courts are part of the government, right? Many conservatives (like me) don't oppose Roe out of any opposition to legalized abortion. We think that abortion kills a baby, so we don't do that. You all are welcome to kill all of your own babies if you want, as long as you keep your blood-spattered hands off of MY babies. However, Roe is BAD LAW. A few guys in robes found a "penumbra" in the Constitution that made it illegal for the states to make any laws restricting a "right" they found "implicit." My poor little underpowered conservative brain doesn't deal too well with "implicit penumbrae." I prefer to stick to simple, concrete things like "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people." That's the tenth amendment...guess they missed it while exploring the penumbra...
