Throw off racism, vote for Obama

Why are South Carolina and Georgia predicted to vote for John McCain rather than Barack Obama in November?

As a white Southerner who grew up in the segregation era, it is obvious to me that the underlying reason is racism. Shame on us. All of our natural qualities are determined by an accident of birth. None of us chose which family we would be born into, nor the color of our eyes, our race or our gender.

Even our religious beliefs are largely determined by an accident of birth. For example, if one were born in Riyadh Saudi Arabia, Islam would be his religion. In my case, I was born into a Catholic family and received a good education from the nuns and brothers who imposed a sense of discipline that served me well throughout my 30 years of service in the United States Air Force.

However, my real education in life was during my military career where I learned to adapt my Southern ways to become a team player and appreciate the talents and knowledge of all the great people I served with from 1961 to 1992.

When I left for basic training in 1961, I packed a Dixie flag, and when the drill instructor discovered the flag during an inspection he asked me what it meant. I said: "Sir, I think the South's going to rise again." I, too, had a "typical white grandmother" who used racial slurs right in front of the maids who cleaned and cooked in her home. So, I fully understand Obama's similar comment about his grandmother.

I shall use Occam's razor and shave off unnecessary assumptions about the candidates. I'm voting for Obama because he's smarter than McCain. McCain graduated 790th out of 795 students at the Naval Academy in 1958. Academically, Obama's better.

big deal! you'll be sorry...

Sir, you really are just sticking your head in the sand if you base your vote off something like that.

Thanks for your service!
I hope yall at least thank this man for his service before you guys go to town on him. heheheh

bone

plenty of white guilt in this LTE. if you are voting for the black candidate because your grandparents harbored racist sentiments, then just say so; don't write about the academic credentials of a candidate in the last sentence of your terrible LTE and claim it has anything to do with deciding your vote. as for me, i can't vote for obama 'cause i don't think he has a clue about what the job of POTUS entails other than making grandiose speeches as a candidate. on the other hand, mccain is just too old and getting more senile by the day - and his successor, cute as she is, just doesn't seem very bright.

Sarah is guilty, which we knew. The Obama/Ayers ploy isn't working. McCain is looking more and more like the loser he is. heard a recording last night of a woman saying to McCain that she was scared Obama would get elected, "and he's an Arab!" When McCain said "No ma'am, he isn't" he was booed! if a candidate , during this economic crisis has to sink into the mud in order to change an election, he's a goner. Obama will win because he's the better man for the job. McCain's ideas will help the very wealthy, and hurt most of the people who will vote for him. That doesn't make sense to me. I wouldn't vote for a candidate whose health care plan would tax me on the health care benefits I receive, and would remove the exclusions that employers receive for giving those benefits, causing the employers to stop covering employees. Why would one reward the companies that overvalued homes, faked income records and used various other unethical methods in the mortgage scandal by renegotiating the loans at their inflated values, instead of revaluing the mortgage to the current value of the home. More redistribution of wealth....to the wealthy. It's time for that to stop.

you remember in 04 after diebold, ken blackmon, and a few other bush cronies stole ohio for bush and stole back the whitehouse, what did the british papers say?"how could 62 million people be so dumb?"heres your proof.the woman probably couldn't find kuwait on a globe if you put your finger on iran to help her.all anyone has to do is scare these idiots up, and place fear in their weak little hearts.very few will step out and make their own decision they depend on others for help.yes, larry how we would all like to forget the past especially when it's true.they know obama is the better candidate, the problem is he doesn't look just like them.they're probably scared that he might do a good job,and God forbid then they'd have to change their attitudes.

habersham100

Oh, dear.... Obama's race has NOTHING to do with the reason I'm not voting for him... McCain's race has nothing to do with the reason I would vote for him. I might vote for him because of his service to his country and I like him - but he is a politician and ALL politicians lie... I'm seriously considering writing in Bill Cosby who seems to have more intelligence than all of them combined... Yep, I might just do that...

raasheedleetawanmomood

This Larry is as big an idiot as "Larry" the cable guy!!!

griesella

I suppose Obama's race has nothing to do with the fact that folk are voting FOR him. What a tragedy and disgrace for our country.

1941

Thank you Mr. Jarret, for explaining to some people what this race is all about, who is most qualified to run this country. Some people are just not going to vote for a person of color, and they prefer to remain ignorant. As long as they look at a person,s race they will remain in the past, and they will be left behind with thier ignorance, and thier hate eating them up.

I4PUTT

Guilt can make you do some crazy things. I would like to see a time when we choose our candidates regardless of race, not because of it.

patriciathomas

Mr Jarrett, thank you for your 30 years of service. I'm sorry you developed such a bad case of white guilt, but I guess that's why you support a far left socialist for president, just because he's black. While there are plenty of qualified black Americans capable of being fine presidents of this country, your party and their willing accomplices in the press would crucify them before you'd let them lead.

justthefacts

What color were Gore and Kerry. For the last time, wishfully, it is not about COLOR!

GnipGnop

Well I am not voting for Obama and it has nothing to do with his color. The letter writer makes it sound as if every white person in the south is a card carrying KKK member. Isn't this the same kind of stereotype we hear blacks complaining of white people perpetuating on their race? I will and have voted for a black person I think is capable of doing the job I elected him to do. Heck I would vote for a green person that met those qualifications. Sounds like to me he is voting for Obama out of some deep seated guilt. As far as Obama being academically better? Neither have released their college transcripts. We don't even know how Obama got into Harvard. This letter writer also might want to spend a little more time up north. They are the most racist people in the USA but somehow the southerners get that distinction time and time again. Just look at the way hollywood portrays all southerners as dumb backwoods rednecks. Tell me a lot about who's running hollywood.

griz, what is a disgrace is a woman who has now been found to have abused her powers of office to further her vengeance against a man who probably stood up to her. What is a disgrace is a campaign that has to sink into the mud and sling hockey(actually that aphorism for feces really puts new meaning to Hockey mom) rather than campaign on policies. On November 4th, we'll see who this country believes is the better man for the job. I'm willing to bet is isn't McCain......

GnipGnop

Y'all have a nice day. I'm off to see my son participate in a rifle/drill team meet.

GACopperhead

Hey Wylds, it really doesn't matter HOW he got into Harvard. the fact is, the school doesn't GIVE away MAGNA CUM LAUDE degrees. McCain was almost at the BOTTOM of his class. At least Sarah can see Russia, though I'm really surprised she knew it was Russia that she could see. Probably an moose told her what it was.

GnipGnop

Wait a minute now. You accuse Palin of abuse of power how do we know someone diodn't use political favors to get Obama into Harvard. I think it does matter. If it doesn't matter then why not disclose it? Neither of them are great candidates but I'm still trying to figure out something. Before the Dem convention the Clintons and Biden himself thought Obama was unqualified to be POTUS. Did someone at the convention wave a magic wand over him and presto now he is? Ok I will continue this later I am out.

McCain selects a VP candidate who is already under an ethics investigation. What does this say about his judgment? We already have the Prince of Darkness (Cheney) in Washington; we don't need to replace him with the Princess of Darkness.

Tujeez

GAcopperhead, The jury is STILL out on Sarah, But the jury has ruled on the DEMs. If you Had DONE THE MATH you would have come to the same conclusion but, being the slathering DEM that you are you would do what all DEMs do. You just ignore the FACTS and keep up the Yapping. Like a skittish little dog, barking at a shadow in the dark. When it's gone, he just keeps on Yapping. Yes GAcopperhead, the BOOGEY MAN is out there, he's still out there but, his name is Barack Obama.

I4PUTT

wylds. Tell Nick & Justin, I'm very proud of them.

We do know that someone used political favors for G.W. How do we know someone did not use political tricks to get palin elected Governor? Only death and taxes.

crackertroy

The fact of the matter is that race has everything to do with this election. Never before have I seen so many black fourteen year old students come to school with T-shirts of politicians on them. They come to school with Obama's picture on their T-shirts. Four years ago, most fourteen year olds (white or black) couldn't tell you who John Kerry was and he stands for most of the same principles as Obama. If Obama were white, the only difference in this election would be the lack of black enthusiasm, people would still hold the same feelings based on his personal and political past -minus his skin color.

angiesdad

what a dolt you are wyldsfarn4.first of all you have never had a chance to vote for a minority for president so how do you know how qualified he is?did anyone check bush's transcripts? how in the hell did he graduate from anywhere?also, remember clinton, and biden were fighting obama for the nomination, obviously you do or say whatever is necessary to win, what an idiot!

DonH

Race is not my issue at all. The things I look for in a leader go beyond the rhetoric. Obama is an excellent public speaker. Can this leader do all the things he says he can. Is this leader realistic, or is he making promises beyond what he can realistically accomplish? We need a leader who puts American citizens first. Don't forget that Obama wants us all to learn Spanish, because he wants to declare an amnesty for illegal alien workers who steal jobs and IDs from Americans. No 'Bama, please!

GACopperhead

Jury is NOT out on Palin, it has found she abused her office. No brag.....just fact.

wribbs

The guy that wrote this LTE is completely ignorant. HE IS THE RACISTS BECAUSE HE'S VOTING FOR OBAMA BECAUSE HE IS BLACK!!!!!!!!!! I was born and raised in the south and I'm sick of everyone assuming I'm a racists when I open my mouth and they hear my accent. Yankees are the biggest racists in the world! NPR can't do a story on anything without mentioning what race, religion, etc. that someone is. I would vote for Herman Cain, J.C. Watts, Lynn Swann, ALL BLACK MEN before I would vote for John McCain. You need to read and study what Obama's positions on the issues are before you sit down at your keyboard to write some stupid drivel like this.

GACopperhead

Boy, you can sure smell the right wing fear in here. Don, mcCain voted FOR the same immigration bill. Go check your facts.

HYPOCRITES 08

WYLD, you cannot be that naive? Do we need to bring back all of the Republican candidate to see what negative things they said about McCain?
