ATLANTA --- Officials plan to merge 14 of Georgia's 33 technical colleges because of the worsening economic crisis.
State officials say the mergers into seven schools won't eliminate programs or lower the quality of education. But some small-town officials and lawmakers fear their colleges will wind up being little more than subsidiaries to schools in bigger cities, reducing prestige and education programs in their areas.
The move, effective in July 2009, includes pairing Chattahoochee Tech in Marietta and North Metro Tech in Acworth. It is meant to save about $3.5 million in administration salaries, fringe benefits and other expenses.
Each union will save about $500,000 by combining salaries and expenses for presidents and vice presidents.
