GOP hero Reagan was a disaster

  • Follow Letters

When Ronald Reagan ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 1980, people though he was a conservative because his GOP rivals and previous presidents were conservative. Well, Reagan's conservatism "wasn't necessarily so."

His economic plan -- the "trickle down theory" -- called for huge tax cuts for the rich coupled with hugely increased defense spending, including "Star Wars." This program was so far from sensible economics that it wasn't even called that -- it was called "Reaganomics." It had also been called "voodoo economics" by George H.W. Bush, the man Reagan chose as his running mate and later succeeded him to the presidency. Reagan's own Office of Management and Budget director David Stockman called his boss' plan a "trojan horse," designed to hide his tax cuts for the wealthy.

Reagan had been an actor before he went into politics so he was good at convincing people that he was someone he was not, so it should be no surprise that when he ran for president people believed him when he said he was conservative, even though he wasn't.

As president, Reagan increased the national debt fourfold and since then his vice president and his vice president's son have increased the deficits to the point where the national debt will be over $10 trillion and the interest on that debt will be $450 billion per year. If this is an example of conservative fiscal policy, then heaven help us if we ever get a president who spends money liberally.

The burden of paying the interest on the national debt, as well as the cost of running the government, will be borne by our children, grandchildren and their children. This is some legacy we're leaving them.

Richard Amundson

He spent money as it should

He spent money as it should be spent, national security, education, infrastructure and public safety instead of idiotic give a way programs. The primary differences between Republicans who support this great president and his beliefs vs. those of democrats is that republicans believe you work hard for your money and should keep the majority of it unless you decide to give it away to friends, family or charity whereas democrats for some reason believe that the successfull should pay more than the 80% of all taxes they are already paying so that others can simply rely on the governemnt for support. Obamas plan to increase give a way programs by 890 trillion is out of control however, those who think the government owes them something will follow him blindly for their free ride.

It's the cornerstone of the

It's the cornerstone of the "New World Order" that Reagan, Bush senior, and now Bush junior have pursued. The total bankruptcy of America. Virtually ALL the US debt has occurred under these three presidents. Now McCain has joined them. Remember the John McCain that ran against Bush 8 years ago? He was a great man. That is not this John McCain. This one wants to win, even if it means selling his soul and our country down the river. Americans are sick to death of Republican borrow and spend policies.

To explain the budget

To explain the budget deficits under Reagan, two words: Tip O'Neil. Ronald Wilson Reagan was perhaps our greatest President. Conservative to the core, brilliant, a true man of the people, a hero of fture wars (missile defense), and a hero of the Cold War (won). May his soul rest in peace and may the name of Richard Amundson remain in the dustpile of history.

Reagan was without a doubt

Reagan was without a doubt the best president this country has had. His arrival on the scene was timely and he stopped America from falling into the hell of socialism and despair. We are at that precipice again. Will Obama push us over the brink? I hope enough Americans are smart enough to prevent it.

Unpublished

Not only was Reagan a disaster, he was also a racist. He initiated his 1980 campaign in a place called Philadelphia, Ms or La. (one of those historical racist states) and used code words promising to restore southern pride. He did/said that for a reason: To employ the southern strategy to win elections. Minorities has long known that guy was a disaster, but because of the AWM, the facts are alway thirty years late.

Yes JesusIsComing and Reagan

Yes JesusIsComing and Reagan breached the Iron Curtain with Truman's Berlin Airlift in 1948, and forced the Soviets to dismantle its missles in Cuba in 1962 with Kennedy's ultimatums. If the LTE writer will look at http://zfacts.com/p/461.html he will see our National Debt already over 10 trillion at $10.27 trillion and growing at the rate of $5-6 million per second. As It Is do you really understand the number 890 trillion that you say is in Obama's give away programs? Each man, woman and child in the US would get $2.9 million. Line these people up and let Obama shell out to each $2.9 million per second it would take him about 9.7 years.

The rampant, unmitigated

The rampant, unmitigated stupidity of some of the people who post comments here as almost beyond belief. To claim that one party has been more or less guilty of "tax and spend" is absurd...both to it. "Trickle down" is a theory that can work but it can't work in a system that permits the stock market to be used as a gambling casssino.

Sending this LTE to the Chron

Sending this LTE to the Chron is like using Over & Out on a bed of fire ants. Trouble is, it's not nearly as effective. Reagan's secret was that he spent so much on defense that the Russians went bankrupt trying to keep up. WELL...thanks to dear ol crusty and our current drugstore cowboy, EVERYbody's going bankrupt trying to keep up. I would put Reagan WAY behind Washington, Jefferson and Davis.

I think we're all losing

I think we're all losing sight of whose fault this really is. If you have been responsible and have no credit card debt, you're better off than most. If you have been responsible and have not taken a mortgage you can't afford, you're better off than most. If you have lived below your means, you are better off than most. If you have continued to save throught your life, you are better off than most. If you have planned your career by either college or a profitable trade, you are better off than most. Greed and corruption will always exist. You don't have to buy into it. Hard times are here. If you didn't prepare you will suffer more than most.

Reagan's legacy has been

Reagan's legacy has been mythologized by both conservatives and liberals. He did play a big role in ending the cold war, and he deserves the credit for that. He was also a deficit spender and deserves blame for that. A hundred years from now, I'm afraid historians will point to the Reagan philosophy of deficit spending and lack of regulation as a root cause whatever happens to the US economy over the next few years.

Justus4, You do not know what

Justus4, You do not know what you are talking about. Ronald Reagan was one of the kindest men this world ever knew. As a child in Dixon, Illinois he took Blacks into his home when they had no place to live or nothing to eat. He was a conservative and fought against giveaway policies for everyone. He took an economy in shambles and improved it for all men and women. Ronald Reagan and nearly all Republicans supported the 1964 Civil Rights Act when nearly all Democrats opposed it. As for what he did for Blacks: From the end of 1982 to 1989, black unemployment dropped 9 percentage points (from 20.4 percent to 11.4 percent), while white unemployment dropped by only 4 percentage points. Black household income went up 84 percent from 1980 to 1990, versus a white household income increase of 68 percent. The number of black-owned businesses increased from 308,000 in 1982 to 424,000 in 1987, a 38 percent rise versus a 14 percent increase in the total number of firms in the United States. Receipts by black-owned firms more than doubled, from $9.6 billion to $19.8 billion. What part of "do not bear false witness" don't you understand?

I know there are people who

I know there are people who will say ANYTHING for attention but is there no limit? President Reagan . . . an idiot? a dunce? a puppet? senile? disaster? racist? Can you not simply disagree with his policies without resorting to unfounded and untrue characterizations? The letter writer stated an opinion that Ronald Reagan was not a conservative but, based on Amundsen's other letters to the editor, it is clear that he does not know what a conservative is. Conservatives believe that people should keep more of the money they earn and government should stay out of their decisions on how to spend that money. Tax money should not be spent foolishly. The Supreme Court should interpret the Constitution, not make law. Because we have not had a true conservative in the Presidency since Reagan, it is easy to be confused. Palin comes closest to that ideal - our hope is that she will be that conservative voice in John McCain's ear.

Yes, his was a disastrous

Yes, his was a disastrous presidency for the budget and economic growth. His big spending led to bigger government. That spending like that for WW11 helped the economy at a cost. Unlike Pred. Clinton, he would not take responsibilty for his actions touching the budget. He never would proffer a decent budget. He ever tried to do away with programs for the poor [ On the other hand, thankfully, he pushed for EFTC]. 'Tis a scandal to bray that the poor are lazy. Few are such. and most will take jobs, working hard. The free market cannot do enought for them. 'Tis a scam to say they are lazy as it was one for Stalin to pick on the Kulaks as parasites. Some work two and three jobs. That they have tv and such does not argue against their poverty. They do not have health insurance. They cannot fly from here to there. And so forth. So Prof. Wiliams and the Cato Insitute bray for nought! Voodoo economics runs contrary to sound judgment. It bespeaks extremism: too much of a good thing. We know from diminishing returns that taxes can be too low or too high, but Laffer economics only always see too high, no matter the evidence for raising taxes. Pres.Clinton raised taxes - no disaster!
