For Pete's sake, let Palin be Palin

I want to respond to some Sarah Palin comments that have appeared in The Chronicle. I hoped Gov. Palin would do well in her debate, but if she didn't, don't blame the media -- blame the McCain camp.

First, he chose her because of her gender in order to get female voters and then cry sexism.

(He thought the Alaska governor could win over unhappy Hillary Clinton supporters.)

Second, the McCain camp has taken away her personality by shaping her ideas and beliefs to align with theirs and she doesn't know how to be herself anymore. Every question is not a "gotcha moment." Most Americans never heard of Gov. Palin until several weeks ago, so it's fair and prudent to be curious about a person who may have to step into the nation's highest office.

We want to know about Gov. Palin just as we want to know about Sen. Barack Obama. The questions being asked of her are fair and I do believe she knows the answers, but she's afraid she might say something the McCain camp would not want said, so she answers with "talking points."

The McCain campaign should simply let her be herself and stop crippling her by accusing the media and Democrats of being sexist and unfair.

About the moderator: It was public knowledge that months before Gwen Ifill was chosen for the job she was writing a book, not about Sen. Obama or his ascension in politics, but about the strides African-Americans have made in politics. How does anyone know who Ms. Ifill is voting for? It's ridiculous to think that somehow she can trick Gov. Palin into looking foolish.

Don't Republicans have confidence in their candidate? Give Gov. Palin a chance to be herself, not just a mouthpiece for Sen. McCain. No excuses!

Palin did just fine - hope you and the other 70,000,000 enjoyed it!

For sure, I don't think that the McCain camp did Gov. Palin any favors by choosing her as his running mate. I frankly think they've dealt her a disgusting insult. She's NOT McCain; she's NOT his generation; she is who she is, and though I was in his camp, I'm not so happy with them right now. She sees the world through her eyes, and not through the eyes of the McCain camp. I'd come closer to voting for her for President, as I think she's probably got more sense, and probably certainly truer values. She just won't fit in their mold, no matter how they try to change her. Sorry, Sarah. Run for POTUS in 2012 (if the country is till afloat), and if I'm still alive, and I'll be happy to give you my vote... Godspeed, Gov. Palin...

This LTE might have made some sense before the debate, but after Palin made Biden appear goofier then normal, it doesn't make much sense. Since the debate, Palin has been out front and winning in her speeches, consistently drawing more then 15,000 to each rally. Stand back Democrats and make room for a winner.

Sit back, pt, for the next 8 years and let Obama fix the problems that the Repubs and Bush have caused, the country isn't going to let you guys ruin us any more.

shamrock

GACopperhead ... being the snake that you are ... stop this "next 8 years" nonsense. We elect for four not eight. It's like Obama who keeps saying he has a plan to get us "energy independant" in 10 years .... the maximum is eight so how do you propose that promise. You know ... the counting chickens before they hatch. 4 years of Obama will be enough to get a whopping 100% victory to anyone who runs against him in four years!

Good LTE...I find the people who try and blame people for asking her simple questions lowbrows and small minded to the point that they think just because she hunts and eats mooseburger makes her qualified...She did horrible in the debate to say the least, and tried to turn what is supposed to be a debate for the second most highest office into a tabloid tv show, using words like "shout out", "you betcha", "doggone"..If she were using urban slang (which is just as bad as the backwoods lingo she used) she would have been called an idiot. Oh, and I forgot, she "winked" to the point where some men who were watching said they sat up in their chairs thinking she was winking at them...I laughed and almost threw up....As a Statesman she would be a disaster, but don't worry, if McCain wins he will toss her away like a dirty towel like he did his first wife and the other women in his life after he has used them up...McCain, a REAL SEXIST... btw, picture Margaret Thatcher winking and acting like Palin...Think she would have went down in history as one of the greatest leaders of Great Britian? NOT!!! Worldwide leaders would have tried to get her phone number instead of respecting her...

shamrock (I believe you about the sham part): At least he has a plan he's sticking with; my question is this: Is McCain a republican or democrat?? I'm confused because he's been so erratic in his ideas that on one day he is this "staunch conservative" calling for a freeze on all government spending except for veteran care, but on the next day he is proposing a wild an extrememly liberal proposal to buy up all the bad mortgages at the full price...Wow, talk about confused! Every SME (Subject Matter Expert) on this issues calls that proposal idiotic and a recipe for disaste and open to fraud and supportig bad behavior...

After the debate:CNN Biden 51% Palin 32%. CBS Biden 46% Palin 21%, Fox Biden 61% Palin 39%. Doesn't sound like she won the debate. She didn't answer the questions. I lost track of the number of times she looked down like she was reading index cards. It didn't matter what was asked, she went to her prepared statement about something unrelated. So she can read a teleprompter and prepared statements. Big deal. Look at her interviews where she actually had to come up with an answer and she speaks nonsense. She also doesn't even speak correct english. Most of the nation is getting tired of the little cutesy remarks. You betcha.

shamrock, I think whoever wins this election will be gone in 4 years. If the Dems gain as much in the senate and house as they predict, they'll be un-elected, for the most part, during the next presidential election. Regardless of what happens Nov. 4, I foresee 4 years of turmoil. If Obama wins, we'll have years of judicial fiat from the Supreme Court. The country may well never recover from that.

christian134

How much more would you like to know about Obama and better still how far are you and others willing to take "looking the other way?" Frankly Palin has had her life turned inside out and she is appears to be a very competent hard working woman with great common sense...On the other hand we have a shadowy character in the form of Obama who has done much that is underhanded and associated with many of the criminal element as well as known terrorists and he is lauded as the next messiah...This is illogical thinking at its finest...I believe that man could walk out in the middle of the White House lawn shoot off a gun and people would find some sort of justification for his action...

TechLover

Judicial fiat. What have we had? From overiding the Fla Supreme court when claiming to be for state's rights, allowing unconsitutional search and eavesdropping, allowing the Pres to increase the power of the executive over the legislative branch and to be above the law... You're right. The country may never recover from these decisions.

Palin being Palin is what is so scary. She's just Bush in lipstick (maybe a "little" smarter).

gymbully

In response to your comment -christian134- i find your suggestive comment less than appropriate by someone who goes by christian and dangerous as well. Perhaps you are linked to some terrorist group by your comments. Shooting a gun off in any circumstance is serious stuff and to suggest doing that at the President is worrisome. There is no excuse! Maybe you should move to Afghanistan and live in a cave too.

She's been in the national spotlight 2 months and she's had her life turned inside out? Obama's had years of scrutiny and right wing attacks and that's "shadowy"? If you want to look at someone considered a Messiah, I suggest you look at the right's worship of Reagan. McCain is dropping like a rock in the polls and the Reps are trying to pull out every dirty trick in the book. Lies, innuendo, character assasination, and race baiting are the keys to the Reublican playbook. McCain even has the guy who did the push polls in SC saying he had a black daughter. As Don Imus said, I'm suprised they haven't pointed out that Obama has 2 black daughters.

patriciathomas

All three LTEs today are about Palin or Reagan. Good! The left is terrified and should be kept on the run. As more of the truth about Obama comes out, the lies about Palin become more obvious, as well as the reason for the lies. Run lefties run, the sunshine of truth is about to shine on all of you.

randon

You must not look at the polls.

gymbully

If these are all lies about Palin - then why is the Republican Party so worried? The sunshine - is partially obscurred by cloudy skies ms patriciathomas. You may need an umbrella. Remember, open mouth and insert foot! The elections will give everyone a reality check.

Palin's been in the naional spotlight for 2 months and she's had her life turned inside out? Obama has had his life scrutinized and picked apart for years by the Reps and that's "shadowy". McCain is dropping like a rock in the polls so it's time for the Reps to pull out every dirty trick in the playbook. Lies, innuendo, and racebaiting are their main weapons. McCain even has the guy who pulled the pish polls in SC saying he had a black daughter on his payroll. As Don Imus said, I'm suprised that the McCain camp hasn't pointed out that Obama has 2 black daughters. also, if you want to see someone looked on as a messiah I suggest you look at the right's worship of Reagan.

Isn't it nice of Michelle to defend Sarah Palin. But..Michelle, no one has taken Sarah's personality. Just watch her shine!

Sorry about the double posts. Screwy dial up internet.

TechLover, you seem to be a knowledge hater. In your 8:09 comment you referred to overturning the attempted judicial fiat of the Florida supreme court as judicial fiat by the U.S. Supreme Court. The entire comment was based on spin and ignored fact.

patriciathomas

I agree with you last two sentences, gymbully, @ 8:55.(they're the ones that make sense)

patriciathomas

Tech Lover, Obama DOES have two black daughters. How is that relevant?

Oh Lord deliver us from literal-minded neocons.

justus...I agree with the child out of wedlock. One parent families are tough. Some of the children act out and begin using drugs. They turn to strange religions. Wait....that describes Obama. I don't know you but seem to be very ignorant. Have a good day anyway.

For those of who think Palin lost the debate...I encourage you to watch it again if you have the opportunity. Make a note of how many times Biden had to say "I agree with you, Governor Palin". If she is such a bad candidate, then she is a reflection on the democratic choice for VP as well since he agreed with a lot of what she supports!

PT.Elections are the responsiblity of the states, not the fed. While they claim to be supporters of state's rights, the US supreme court intervened where they did not have jurisdiction. Again you criticize other's knowledge and call it spin. I suggest you look in the mirror. The Reps use race baiting, fear, gay bashing, and hate as their prmary campaign tactics. What Imus said was a joke about Bush's old campaign guy (now with McCain) using race baiting and prejudice. That's how it's relevant. Do you lack a sense of humor as well?
