Police warn commuters this week

  • Follow Metro

AIKEN --- South Carolina commuters, watch your driving this week, because the police will be watching you.

It is Driving Safely to Work week, a time when law enforcement agencies work to raise awareness about the increased danger to motorists during their commute to and from work.

"Our goal is for everyone to make it to work safely each week," said Lance Cpl. Trevor Clinton of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Collisions are more likely to occur during rush hours -- 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 6 p.m.

"With the increase in traffic during those hours, drivers should try not to be so aggressive in their driving habits, be patient with the traffic that's around them," Lance Cpl. Clinton said.

According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, there have been 419 collisions, resulting in one death, in Aiken County during the three-hour evening commute so far this year. During the morning commute, there have been 198 collisions this year, resulting in one death, on Sept. 30.

Statewide in 2008, there have been 19,886 collisions during rush-hour traffic, resulting in 130 fatalities.

Lance Cpl. Clinton said mornings and evenings are the busiest times for law enforcement.

"People are really aggressive during those hours because they're trying to get to work on time, and they're trying to get through the traffic," he said. "Everybody needs to be focused on the roadway."

"our goal is to give out more

"our goal is to give out more tickets at this time" would have been a more truthful statement, officer clinton. but in the interest of raising awareness and safety i'm sure you can justify almost anything these days.

"If you do not violate the

"If you do not violate the laws, then you do not need to worry about a ticket." It's not so black-and-white when it comes to largely subjective laws like these which have provisions such as "inappropriate speed for conditions". At least they've done us the courtesy of warning us that they intend to focus on meeting their quota of tickets this week.

Kudos Lance Cpl. Trevor

Kudos Lance Cpl. Trevor Clinton of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. I don't think tickets are the reason for the season. The reason is saving lives. Yours and mine. Coming from Aiken Monday, several vehicles had to be running 70+ mph in/out of traffic. So easy to drag good drivers into a rage when they continue to do it and get away with it. I frequent Highway One from Georgia to Aiken and the speed limits are very confusing being up/down - up/down throughout the approximate 10-12 miles and consideration needs to be reviewed.

So now we don't watch out for

So now we don't watch out for traffic, we have to watch out for super trooper!! Just remember we elect these idiots, better known as INCUMBENTS or the people who hire them!! By the way boston, traffic wouldn't be weaving in and out if people would stay to the right after passing. Thats how they teach you to drive in the civilised world!

boston93 , you are the prime

boston93 , you are the prime reason,no pun, that police get away with turning holidays, special events, and situations such as the on going forever and a day road construction into cash cows.
you are stupid if you think the motivation is safety, totally stupid.the motivation is to produce by hook or crook enough income to justify the budget requests and tax dollars these people waste.
every two bit police force in this area tries to capitalize on these situations, just like first friday, and even the small sassafras festival in burnerttown. they close off the street, detour traffic around the main street, but guess what....put a check point on the detour route????
why didn't they just set up a vendor stand and sell hot dogs....that's an appropriate analogy...

We get police all over the

We get police all over the road and "confusing up/down- up/down" speed limits. -----

Germany gets sections of highway with "no" speedlimit, speed 'ticket' cameras, and up/down- up/down speed limits, along with a lower highway fatality rate. -----

The difference? DRIVER EDUCATION AND STRICT TESTING

Cruise control won't work in

Cruise control won't work in many areas where the "super trooper" hangs out. Stretches that are too short for cruise control. And for those of you who are silly enough to believe these programs are all about your safety. You obviously never worked where I have. It's about the revenue.... Trust me on this one. One day or one time of the day should not serve as an excuse for citation writing at its finest. Americans have lost control of their own destiny. Your destiny now lays in the hands of some bureaucrat, be they in Washington or the state capital. Sorry America, you have surrendered your rights to be free to have a false sense of security. What will you sacrifice next?

If, by hook or crook you're

If, by hook or crook you're caught, don't blame those of us who obey the speed limits. Right or left lane, doesn't matter, the speed limit stays the same. If you're the snotface who just has to weave in and out of traffic, then you deserve to be rewarded. The only Super Trooper you have to watch for is the dope looking in the rear view mirror to see if he/she got away with being, as you say, stupid. Dissxxit, and playxxuck. Just for you!

BTW, you meatheads, and justretired (from where, the pen?) when's the last time you saw someone pulled over for obeying traffic rules? Your time will come, if not already. You all sound as if you've been cited. Speak up. P-poor driving is not an excuse for down-playing good intentions by the law enforcement community. Suck it up, pals!

Why do they let us know?

Why do they let us know? Seems like it would be much more effective if they wouldn't tip off the public.

Think about it a minute. They

Think about it a minute. They let us know because they actually DON'T have a quota. Those were outlawed years ago & some ppl didn't get the email. In some places, finding stupid drivers is like shooting fish in a barrel. I think by telling us they're actually trying to make their job easier, but, alas, they're still going to be busy, because some ppl don't get it, don't care or are just stupid. Let's not forget talking on a cell phone, eating, changing clothes, reading the paper, etc. Everything BUT driving.
