More than 60 exhibitors are expected at the 23rd annual Science Education Enrichment Day at the University of South Carolina Aiken on Oct. 18.

"The purpose is just to get people on campus and get them excited about science and math," said John Hutchens, director of special programs at the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center at USC Aiken.

Almost all of the exhibitors will have hands-on demonstrations involving math and science, and they will show how science and math are used in real-world applications, he said.

Although the event is targeted at fourth- through eighth-graders, there will be something for all age ranges, including adults.

The hands-on demonstrations include making paper and slime, which is always popular, Mr. Hutchens said. Honda Cars of Aiken will have a hybrid car on display, and a representative from the Savannah River Ecology Lab will bring out some of its creatures.

Other exhibits will focus on crime scene chemistry, telescopes, robotics and glass blowing.

The free event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The university's two gymnasiums will be used, and some of the activities will be held outside.

Mr. Hutchens said the event draws about 2,500 visitors each year.
