ATHENS, Ga. - Marjorie Ann Matthews Harrison, 72, passed away Friday, September 26, 2008. Marjorie was the daughter of the late Dr. Walter Eugene Matthews and Geraldine Gerow Matthews. She was born on July 12, 1936 in Augusta, Georgia where she graduated from Richmond Academy. She earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Georgia in 1958 after which, she worked for the Citizens and Southern Bank in Augusta. Marjorie was the wife of E. Dunbar Harrison, Jr. After their marriage in 1961, the Harrison's lived in Atlanta, Savannah, and Athens, Georgia. During her husband's banking career, Marjorie raised their three children, participated in a number of volunteer and civic organizations, and was actively involved with her church. She held memberships in the Junior League chapters of Atlanta, Savannah, and Athens in which she worked in many of their service projects. Her passion, however, was her work with the Humane Society and various animal rescue projects. During her years in Athens, she was well known as the lady who would take in a lost animal and find the rightful owner or a new home. She was a founding member of St. Stephens Anglican Church in Athens, where she worked in a variety of the church's women's activities and became one of the first presidents of the Women's Guild. In addition to her husband, E. Dunbar Harrison, Jr., Marjorie is survived by a daughter and son in law, Marjorie and Scott Scaffe, son and daughter in law, Dunbar and Andrea Harrison, III, son and daughter in law, Eugene and Laura Harrison; her brother, Wayne Matthews of Augusta, and five grandchildren, Christopher Nickels, Harrison Nickels, Anna Matthews, 'Mattie' Scaffe, Dunbar Harrison, IV, and Foster Harrison. A memorial service will be held at St. Stephens Anglican Church, 800 Timothy Rd., Athens, GA 30606, Monday, September 29th at 10:30AM with The Very Reverend Robert T. Jones officiating. The family will receive visitors in the parish hall following the service. A private burial will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made in her honor to St. Stephens Anglican Church, 800 Timothy Rd, Athens, GA 30606, St. Mary's Hospice House, 1660 Jennings Mill Rd, Bogart, GA 30622, or the Athens Area Humane Society, 399 Beaverdam Rd, Athens, GA 30605.
