Man gets life sentence for killing 21-year-old

  • Follow Metro

Convicted murderer Maurice Roscoe didn't have a problem facing his victim's family Friday, he told the judge. He just didn't want to participate in his sentencing hearing.

Judge James G. Blanchard imposed the mandatory life sentence for murder on Mr. Roscoe, 29, and added the maximum possible for two weapon violations, 10 years.

A Richmond County Superior Court jury convicted him of murder last month in the Feb. 20, 2007, shooting death of Pierce McClattie, 21.

The day of the shooting, Mr. Roscoe argued with Mr. McClattie's brother. When the brothers left the Jennings Home complex, Mr. Roscoe pursued them and fired a handgun into the McClattie vehicle on Olive Road. A bullet pierced Mr. McClattie's head.

"Life doesn't mean anything to him," the victim's father, Pierce McClattie Sr., said of Mr. Roscoe.

He's shown no remorse and actually acts "like it's a joke to him," Mr. McClattie said.

Mr. Roscoe made a brief appearance in court Friday. Handcuffed and shackled and dressed in the jail's green jumpsuit, he told Judge Blanchard he had nothing to say and didn't want to attend his sentencing hearing.

Judge Blanchard asked Mr. Roscoe whether the reason was because he couldn't face the McClattie family. Mr. Roscoe turned and looked at the family members filling two rows of benches and shrugged. He didn't have a problem facing them, he said.

Judge Blanchard told the McClattie family he hoped the parole board would read the court transcripts of Mr. Roscoe's case before making a decision about his future. Agreeing with the victim's father, the judge said Mr. Roscoe should never be free again.

Good thing Judge Blanchard was on the bench, a less wiser jurist would have sentenced him to time served. A wiser judge would have sentenced him to a more just punishment, DEATH!

Who cares if he didn't want to attend his sentencing make him do it anyway. I don't understand why this murders rapist etc have rights there rights should be taken away when they commet the crime...

Bet he won't be shrugging at anyone now that he's in the big house. He's in for a rude awakening and a never ending nightmare.... just like the nightmare he is putting the McClattie family through! What a waste of two young men's lives.

I resent that my tax money goes to keeping trash like that alive. I wonder if Roscoe was from a single parent welfare home? The Federal welfare program is producing criminals and we are paying for it. Support www.hongkongaugustaga.org

While this brutal, uncaring murderer received life + 10 years, it is most unfortunate that the sentence included parole. It seems he was convicted of second degree murder and not first degree murder. As for your comment, sargentmidtown, WEALTHY people are just as corrupt and DO COMMIT heinous crimes such as the one Roscoe was convicted of. To imply that all individuals who come from "single parent welfare homes" are the only ones who commit crimes is blatenly a moronic thought. Shame on you--there are MANY from these homes who are productive, law-abiding citizens and MANY are serving in our armed forces just so YOU can contemplate such irrational thoughts using your moronic mentality.

They should have just taken him to the sand pit and put a bullett in his head like he did the other person. I do not like providing lodging and food for that piece of crap either.

What a piece of #$$%. I hope better justice is served slow and painful once he is in the big house!!!
