How local government can cut spending

  • Follow Letters

I read the article in the paper Friday morning; this is not what I wanted to see first thing in the morning.

It stated that, due to state fund cuts, property owners "may" be billed again, to make up for the difference.

We, as property owners, should not be continually burdened with the shortfalls and continued government spending. As a Richmond County resident, I chose to live here when I bought my house years ago; but this tax-and-spend and make-the-homeowner-pay has got to stop.

As we have had to adjust our lifestyle and spending habits and look for ways to cut-back, as our income either remains the same or has tiny increases, it's past time for our governments to do the same.

Look with open-eyes at your spending, projects and supplements; find places to reduce the burden on our community, not increase it. First look at where cuts can be made; start with the high salaries that are paid in government.

I call for a 5 percent salary cut across the board for anyone making over a certain amount; cut cell-phone usage, or renegotiate the contracts, and cut who has one; cut gas allowances by 25 percent until the prices go down; reduce utility usage in buildings ( there are many ways to do this; I have in my home); reduce trash pickup to once a week and ask that everyone recycle to help pay the cost; and get realistic in spending our money.

The homeowner shouldn't be the one to take it on the chin each time.

Come-on folks; we voted you into office to make a difference. Let's see that happen.

AMEN, Larry Garner. I said it in yesterday's paper......they don't know how to manage money all they know is to pass the buck to the taxpayer.

You certainly have the right idea Larry Garner. Asking elected officials to embrace the responsibilities of their job is the right approach. How will you force the situation?

Great question PT. How can we force a re vote if government officials don't do what the taxpayers demand? Perhaps if elected officials knew that we would demand them to be voted out of office at normal intervals it would help. But it would certainly be a stronger statement if we had some method of demanding a re vote at 1 year intervals if certain criteria were not met.

I have noticed that in CC they aren't discussing sending out another tax bill. In the last meeting they discussed that departments need to submit cut considerations since they aren't getting the state money.

If you vote for a tax increase, you will not get my vote.
