Ex-economist gets 10 years for fraud charge

CHARLESTON --- Flashy economist Al Parish appeared in court Thursday in shackles, baggy prison khakis and a white T-shirt as he was sentenced to 10 years, the maximum, on a state securities fraud charge.

Mr. Parish, 51, a former Charleston Southern University economist already serving 24 years in federal prison for defrauding investors of an estimated $66 million, was sentenced in a brief hearing before Circuit Judge G. Edward Welmaker.

Prosecutors alleged Mr. Parish spent millions of the money investors entrusted to him on loud sportcoats and sweaters, fancy homes and cars, and guitars once owned by rock stars.

He pleaded guilty to a single state count earlier this year. The state sentence will be served at the same time as the federal, which is being appealed.

"I want to apologize to anyone who is still here for this mess," said Mr. Parish, his hands at his sides, held by shackle chains which reached across the back of his waist.

"I also want to apologize, this is all they gave me to wear," he added. "I wouldn't have chosen this."

Change in policy lets Citadel freshmen nap

CHARLESTON --- Citadel cadets are now a bit more like other college students and can take naps during their free time.

Commandant of Cadets Greg Stone says an internal review found cadets need more chance to rest, especially freshmen, who must adjust to a grueling military training program and challenging academics. The military college changed a policy that prohibited cadets from sleeping during their free time.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports the new policy also allows cadets who want to go to bed early to avoid the 11 p.m. knock at the door to make sure they're in their rooms.

"I also want to apologize, this is all they gave me to wear," he added. "I wouldn't have chosen this." Well he hasn't lost his sense of humor !!

The state sentence will be served at the same time as the federal, which is being appealed. Why waste the court's time when the sentencing process is moot anyway? Just do the paper work & save the Judge's time.

Another animal ---no pardon me not animal because animals, for the most part, take care of their offspring--Another demon has cowardly murdered an innocent...If guilty he needs to be put in a cell with the murdered baby' picture flashed on his cell walls continuously until the day he meets his Maker...

I have nothing but contempt for anyone who abuses children.

There is no excuse for killing a child. I suppose if this had been a woman, people would come out of the woodwork defending her sorry behind.
