Silent film adds different dimension

They're opening Pandora's Box tonight at Sacred Heart Cultural Center.

This particular Pandora's Box is a 1929 silent movie that will be screened as part of the Westobou Arts Festival.

Organist Ron Carter will provide the old-theater sound for the movie.

"The music really makes the film pop right off the screen," said Catherine Wahl, the chairwoman of the silent movie committee.

Mr. Carter will play different scores written for the film, along with other 1920s music to accompany the scenes.

Sandra Fenstermacher, the executive director of Sacred Heart, said the silent movie experience gives a different dimension to the arts festival.

"They have focused on a lot of different areas of art to interest people and attract people to come to Augusta," she said.

Ms. Wahl and Mr. Carter chose the movie.

"We wanted to do a real dark drama movie thriller," she said. "This one is real slick and it has some pretty racy themes."

Though the movie is German, when director G.W. Pabst was looking for an actress to play Lulu, the lead, he found American actress Louise Brooks to be a perfect fit.

"She was always a real renegade," Ms. Wahl said.

Lulu, like the mythical Pandora, ruins everyone she comes into contact with, leaving only hope behind.
