Gets Founders Scholarship

Bryan Davis , of Augusta, has received a $500 Founders Scholarship from the Black Faculty and Staff Organization at the University of Georgia, Athens.

Gets degree in economics

Marcus Alex Brown , of Augusta, has earned a bachelor of science degree in economics from Oklahoma State University, Stillwater.

Teacher of the year winners

The following Richmond County teachers have been named Teachers of the Year for the 2008-09 school year for their schools:

Georgia State Idol winner

Carlena Prophet , of Augusta, has been named the winner of the 2008 Georgia State Idol competition at Georgia State University, Atlanta.

Valdosta State graduates

The following area students have earned degrees from Valdosta (Ga.) State University:

Augusta -- Terrance Antonio Jones , bachelor of fine arts in speech communication; Jacqueline Nicole Mitchell , bachelor in general studies; and Latray Barnard Walker , master of education in communication disorders.

Hephzibah -- Samantha Nikeya Farmer , bachelor of science in exercise physiology; and Devon James Perry , bachelor of arts in criminal justice.

Earn reading awards

The second grades of Bayvale Elementary School, Jenkins-White Elementary Charter School and Craig-Houghton Elementary School, and the fourth grade of Copeland Elementary School have been awarded State Superintendent's Distinguished Achievement Awards in Reading from the Georgia Department of Education.
