That more people can identify Mark Richt than can identify Mike Adams tells us more than I'd like to admit about the relative valuations of college football and learning in our state. The legacy of such a misprioritization may be telling.
For the third Sunday in a row the University of Georgia football team has been on the front page for no good reason.
If Georgia Southern had beaten UGA, then that would be news, but still better placed in the sports section. With over two dozen people killed in a train wreck, that would have been front page material, but it was tucked into the middle of section A.
I hope none of the families that lost a loved one in that train wreck ever find out how unimportant they are compared with the UGA football team. Maybe next Sunday some real news might make the front page. This is an election year, in case you run out of tragedies such as a hurricane hitting the coast.

Needed for the brain dead.
At least it's worth reading!
You could make the same argument about The Oscars, The Miss America Pageant, or the photo showing Britany Spears getting out of a car with a stategic blur over a specific area because she doesn't have panties on. The paper is in the business to do one thing, not report, but sell more papers and advertising. Journalism? Don't make me laugh, Bill. That's as old fashioned as morals in politics.
CH great points. Here's one more. It is more important to hold the readers attention that it is to inform. Dilliards won't buy that 10 page spread if readership gets too low. I'm a die hard Bull Dawg fan, but I get that it's just a game. You referenced the lack of morals in politics, from where I stand most of us must be in politics.
You must have been on the chess team in high school!! NERD!

You never know what news you'll find where. The Chronicle needs a Extreme Makeover.
Must be a SC fan...or not raised in the South where football is a way of life.
Football is news. Georgia football is front page news in Georgia. Seems logical to me. I'll bet the train wreck was front page news in L.A. and Georgia football was tucked away in the sports section.
"Are football games front page news?" Hello? You're in Augusta, GA....are you a damn yankee or just stupid?
don't all the football fans know how the game turned out before the paper comes out? so it's not really news to them. and to everyone else it's nothing. it's fine to want to read about sports, some of my favorite people are sports commentators, hunter thompson, bob costas, but it's not helpful to the community really that the press is meant to serve.
Ummmm who are you meekmoeeko to say who the press is "meant" to serve? I pay for the paper so therefore it IS meant for me as well as anyone else who chooses to read!! And yes sports are very helpful to the community. In this time of nothing but bad news, a good, fun game keeps people in good moods!! Not everything on the front page should be death or a horrible tragedy!
