This war is ours; I support our troops

  • Follow Letters

As I read the letters to the editor Sept. 16, something just didn't sound right.

Mr. McGaughy's letter entitled "This is Bush's war to live with," I feel is totally wrong. This is every red-blooded American's war to live with.

As a proud veteran who served seven and a half years, I support President Bush and I support our troops fighting this war.

Mr. McGaughy stated there were "thousands upon thousands of Iraqi civilians killed, many who were women and children." Mr. McGaughy, Iraq is not America. In Iraq, women and children are taught to kill Americans, not play Mario on the Nintendo Wii and cook as our women and children are taught.

Having lost family and friends in the war, my heart goes out to all who have paid the ultimate price. Unlike past wars, this war is being fought by an all-volunteer Army. There was no draft. If men and women joined to get college funds and to get away from trouble, they may have joined for the wrong reasons.

As far as the war being planned before 9-11, that is probably true, however the same intelligence reports that President Bush received about 9-11 and he didn't react on are the same intelligence reports that stated Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. What should Bush have done? Wait for Saddam to strike first?

Contrary to popular belief, weapons of mass destruction were found and destroyed in Iraq. Their names were Uday and Qusay Hussein.

God bless America and God bless our troops.

Amen, Myran...God bless you! Now, sit back and watch the pinhead liberals come at you. They seem to think the only bad people in the world are Republicans. Owbama wants to cut and run. I guess actually standing up to terrorists is above his pay grade. Never mind how weak that makes us look in the world view, or how that will encourage future terrorists. I guess an actual leader who's expeienced war like John McCain and who has sons currently fighting in Iraq like McCain and Palin don't matter. Okay, Techlover, GAhd, Justus, and GAgirl...let's hear what pearls of liberal wisdom you grace us with today.

SisterAbdullahX_

Actually Obama doesn't want to cut and run just yet...... "Iraqi government sources have revealed to the New York Post that Presidential candidate Barack Obama demanded Iraqi officials stop negotiations with the Bush Administration to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq. Fearful that the success in Iraq would harm his political aspirations, Obama sought to keep U.S. troops in Iraq so he can continue attacking the Bush Administration for not imposing a timetable for withdrawal."

JohnRandolphHardisonCain

7 more U.S. troops died today when a Chinook helicopter made a "hard landing" in Iraq. That brings the total U.S. military fatalities in the war in Iraq to at least 4168. United States is spending $10 billion a month in Iraq to maintain a precarious status quo. Iraqis cannot agree on an election law. The surge has not pacified Iraq nor has it united Iraqis. Iraq is a country of roughly 25 million. United States troops cannot withdraw from Iraq and leave a stable situation. Therefore U.S. victory in Iraq is not near. United States is also mired in a war in Afghanistan that will enter its 8th year on Oct 7. 2008 has been the bloodiest year for U.S. troops in Afghanistan since we overthrew the Taliban in 2001. In the final days of his Presidency, George W. Bush is expanding these costly wars. The President ordered U.S. ground troops into Pakistan. That has angered Pakistanis and their military. Pakistan is a nuclear armed nation of 165 million people. United States simply does not have the human resources nor the financial resources to wage endless wars in Iraq & Afghanistan, to maintain a precariously & costly status quo in Iraq, to escalate the war in Afghanistan, and to extend the so-called War on Terror into another war in Pakistan. United States has reached the limits of its power - militarily, economically, and politically.

SisterAbdullahX_

7 troops died in a non combat related helicopter crash....OMG, we better run away! Cain will never change. Now that we see the light at the end of the tunnel in Iraq, he claims we are "mired" in a war in AAfghanistan, where he, himself claimed we should have been in the past. Afghanistan used to be Cain's reason we shouldn't be in Iraq, but not that victory is near in Iraq, he has to change his hatred toward Afghanistan so he can still hate on America. Typical coward mentality.

JohnRandolphHardisonCain

There is no military "victory" near in Iraq. SisterAbdullahX is a gullible fool. He falls victim to a disinformation piece planted in The New York Post by the charlatan Amir Taheri who has previously reported false stories. Barack Obama never "demanded Iraqi officials stop negotiations with the Bush Administration to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq." United States had a right to invade Afghanistan in order to destroy those responsible for the 9/11/01 attacks. United States had the right to overthrow the Taliban because they harbored Al Qaeda. United States does not have the right to occupy Afghnistan for 7 entire years and to continue to wage war there. United States military must leave Afghanistan and pursue a regional solution. Americans must say NO to another war in Pakistan. This is not "cowardly". Remember that fools rush in where angles fear to tread. Anyone who does not think that United States is capable of being defeated needs to look at the multiple calamities now befalling United States. Nobody is cowed by the Cowboy President Bush. The U.S. dollar is rapidly becoming worthless. Asian investors have lost confidence in America. The decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court are being cited less and less in other countries. Nobody is looking to United States for leadership anymore. United States of America is clearly in decline - economically, politically, and militarily. The American empire has reached its limits and is now in decline. Continuing to wage counterproductive, unwinnable wars only accelerates that decline.

CH

Cain, take a look at the dollar. In case you missed it, its rise in value is one of the factors given to bringing down the price of oil. Its still the single most popular currency in the world. There must be a reason for that. There were whiners like you who said we couldn't win a war with a fanatical nation like Japan in 1941. What happened with that logic? Owbama now wants to stay in Iraq. I guess his pay grade improved so he came up with an answer. If you think the world isn't better off without Saddam Hussein, then I have some oceanfront property in North Dakota I'll sell you...cheap!

JohnRandolphHardisonCain

Obama does NOT want to stay in Iraq. Just two days ago he reiterated his commitment to "responsibly end the war in Iraq". Respected economists say the U.S. housing market still has a long way to fall, and the U.S. dollar is still in decline. Gold and Swiss francs are recommended as a way to protect assets. The euro has passed the U.S. dollar as the world's most influential currency, but the financial crisis / credit crisis / liquidity crisis/ is also hitting Europe. If you were truly well informed CH, you would know that Iraqis - including Iraqis who detested Saddam Hussein (with the exception of the Kurds) - are hard pressed to affirm that getting rid of Saddam Hussein was worth the price that has been paid. Iraq is an ongoing disaster. The U.S. war in Iraq is nowhere near to being won - either militarily or politically. Meanwhile United States hemorrhages red ink, exacerbates instability in the Middle East, creates chaos in south Asia, and makes more enemies everywhere. The U.S. war in Iraq was a mistake. The U.S. war in Iraq is a mistake. The U.S. war in Iraq will continue to be a mistake as long as U.S. troops illegally occupy Iraq.

CH

Hey Cain, I've been to Iraq. Have you? I talked to Iraqis, and the vast majority said thank you for getting rid of that butcher Hussein. I served twenty years, and have a brother serving now. Why don't you ask the men and women serving what they think before you coronate yourself as the almighty expert in all matters political, economical, and military. Maybe you think the terrorists would simply go away after 9/11. Its that kind of lazy, naive thinking that emboldened them to begin with. The Israelis warned us about this, and they're warning us now not to let up. Pull your head out of a certain part of your anatomy and take a look at the fact that we've not had another 9/11 in 7 years. What's up with that? And please, tell me an administration, Republican or Democrat that hasn't had to deal with a recession. They come and go like storms, and better times always follow. Don't believe me? Remember the Wall Street meltdown in 87? It was followed by some of the greatest economic growth in US history. Cain, you may want to scream the sky is falling, but for those of us who have a pair, it is simply a time to ride it out and get ready for the good times that are coming.

ibewalkintooldmemphis

God Bless Our Troops!!!! for you Cain, eat a big shiet sandwich!

CH

Good one, Ibe. Unfortunately, I have to leave you good folks. Some of us have to work today. God bless America!

I4PUTT

Why would anyone ever respond to Cain? You can't reason with broccoli. When we first committed to go to Iraq the vast majority of this nation supported that decision. So did an over whelming majority of congress. So did more than 35 other countries. When times get tough, cowards always look for the easy way out. Many years ago I served in Viet Nam. As the public opinion of the war there soured and troop withdrawal became policy I felt that I was in more danger than ever before. Sometime support companies left before those who depended on that support. Ammo was even rationed sometimes. Going camping in the beautiful woods of S E Asia just didn't seem as safe. I have a great respect for what our troops are doing. My vote is to see this thing to it's victorious end for a change.

Myran Hunt thank you for your service to this country and telling it like it is instead of the way mainstream media would like it portrayed.

christian134

Thank you Myran Hunt for your loyalty, service and sacrifice for your fellow Americans and this great nation...Thank you and may God continue to bless you now and always....

afadel

What victory are some of you talking about? Number 1, the lastest recommendations from military commanders is that troops cannot be withdrawn from Iraq without jeopardizing the so-called "security gains" of the Bush's escalation of 2007. So troops are not coming home soon, if we keep the Republicans in power. Number 2, do any of you war supporters care about the money the U.S. is spending? If you don't, let's have a check box on our tax forms so that those of us who do want to pay for it can put their money where their mouths are. Number 3, does nobody notice how Maryan Hunt justifies killing Iraqi civilians? Isn't that immoral? Finally, assuming everything goes well, and we get to withdraw after 20 years of 10-15 U.S. soldiers killed a month and $10 billion spent every month, how has that helped us?

factchecker

They become enemy combatants when they try to kill even if they are women and children. As far as the money goes, if we weren't spending it on war the Dems would be sending to other countries as foreign aid or to nationalize more companies working towards their utopia. I'd rather it go to killing those that want to kill us.

I4PUTT

afadel, where were you with all this logic during WW2? How's your German?

GnipGnop

I can see a lot of people never learned the lessons from Vietnam. You let military leaders fight wars and keep politicians and politics out of it. So civilians get killed in wars. That's part of fighting wars. It sucks but it's an ugly part. Let us not forget the thousands of civilians that died as a result of terrorists actions. Not just on 911 but in every suicide bombing and plane or ship hijacking there has been. I, for one, believe that if these terrorists want to meet Allah so bad we should aspire to make that wish come true. You curse wars and spit on soldiers that give you the very freedoms you enjoy. Everything is not a conspiracy and sometimes peace can only be found on the other side of war. You cannot call all the terrorists together and join hands and sing Kumbaya. Make no mistake about it. They do not want your opinion. They want your head severed from your body because you are an infidel. Cain and people of his ilk would be the first to go in an islamic society because they would lay down and let it happen.

disssman

ch If we haven't had a terrorist problem since the Iraqi invasion, why do we have way over 4100 deaths and tens of thousands of severly cripled soldiers. I would say that we have had terrorist attacks, in fact we have lost far more than 911 ever cost us.

TechLover

I see a lot of you peolple never learned the lessons of Vietnam, You don't fight a war that does not is not required for true natonal security. The letter writer says that the women and children of Iraq are taught to kill Americans, then CH says that most say thank you. Is the thank you so they can be "free" to kill more Americans?

GnipGnop

What should we do? Just like in the late 30's when Hitler came into power people sat back and did nothing. Then everyone was shocked when (4 million jewish deaths later) he was trying to dominate the world. With great power comes great responsibility. We are obligated to give as many people the freedoms we enjoy whenever possible. You are twisting what CH says to fit the agenda you have come up with. There is a big difference between someone that enjoys their newfound freedom and someone that would plant IED's and wear a suicide bomb.

What happened to Bush's stance against nation building before his election? And the rhetoric about how Iraq was going to burden the cost of the war before we went in and then says after we go in that it wouldn't be viewed favorably by Islam?Do you think it's coincidence that oil prices and record profits by the oil companies rise after Bush, the oil man, is elected? What about Halliberton, previously headed by Cheney, getting all the no bid contracts and repeatedly mismanaging them with BILLIONS unaccounted for? P.T.Barnum said it best;there's a SUCKER born every minute!! Liberal? No,just observent.

PLAYLIKETHUNDER4

my son ,who btw is home from his tour in iraq, was hit twice by ied's(wounds superficial thank god). he slept in makeshift tent cities,he endured all the trappings of war.he told me thursday nite over a beer, ( yeah he's only 21,it was our first beer together) that all it takes is one iraqi civilian to say thank you,we love you, and you immediately understand why you are there, and why we must do our duty.
enough said.

christian134

Techlover I suggest that many of those who are posting on this forum have not one clue as to what happened in Viet Nam let alone the harm thrust upon it's soldiers afterwards or the carnage of ethnic cleansing after we abruptly pulled out...That can not be allowed to happen again...Our men and women fighting this war are doing, some at the supreme sacrifice, so you and others will be allowed to continue to live as you are now living which is mercifully better than those who are residing in the countries we are currently fighting...Support them by not saying anything ugly against them...To speak as some of my generation spoke was mean-spirited and just down-right fatal to many who came home to a nation that spit upon them and looked at them with hatred...This is not Viet Nam...

War Is A Racket

WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives.

A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of the people. Only a small "inside" group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes.

In the World War [I] a mere handful garnered the profits of the conflict. At least 21,000 new millionaires and billionaires were made in the United States during the World War. That many admitted their huge blood gains in their income tax returns. How many other war millionaires falsified their tax returns no one knows.

How many of these war millionaires shouldered a rifle? How many of them dug a trench? How many of them knew what it meant to go hungry in a rat-infested dug-out? How many of them spent sleepless, frightened nights, ducking shells and shrapnel and machine gun bullets? How many of them parried a bayonet thrust of an enemy? How many of them were wounded or killed in battle?

Play - thank your son for me and let him know that he and his comrades are in a lot of people's prayers every day. There has not been a draft since the Vietnam war so everybody who has served that are under 55 signed up in the all-volunteer Army. I knew, as did everyone else, in 1974 and the 20 years after that I could go to a war zone at any time my nation sent me. People who went in before this war started and after know the same consequenses are there. If they didn't what did they think they were doing in training? Training to fight wars or just playing Army?

GnipGnop

You should add into that LaTwon that this is a man that was born In 1881 and died in 1940. He didn't even see the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He didn't get to see airplanes flying into high rises or people strapping bombs to themselves and killing people. You have to weigh his opinion toward the time he lived in.

jillpeterson

i think i recognize a lot of you war analysts from youtube. the iraqis are taught to kill americans? since when? no, really, when? and why? and by whom? and how?

GnipGnop

I agree play. I also commend your son for his service. Some people appreciate what he does.

GnipGnop

Well meek those IED's aren't burying themselves. Nobody has said all Iraqi's are bad nor are they all taught to kill Americans. Once again you read what you want out of a paragraph.
