Don't blame Bush for gas prices

  • Follow Letters

This will be a short reminder from one who does remember. I wonder how many citizens can recall?

President Bush has been our national leader now for almost eight years. Early in his first term, he introduced a proposal through Congress to drill for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve in Alaska.

Almost every Democrat in the House, and even enough of the president's own party, refused to authorize the measure. His motion was denied.

Look at us now! Had we started drilling then, we could presently be completely independent of foreign oil.

And yet, there are still thousands, maybe even millions, who totally blame the president, for our present-day gasoline problem.

WOW I like that post justus,I thought that I was the only one that remembered that. Know one on the right will comment on it with any intelligence. That was the first of our Constituional rights that we lost. Why was it kept a big secret? Could it be that he was lining up Haliburton and maybe T Boone Pickens? Who knows but the communist's that were in on it.

DrGunby68

Lie Bush, Mac and most Repugs...big lie embedded...drilling on every inch of America where oil is would not make us independent of foreign oil...where is the cite...repeating a lie over and over does not make it true...blaming the questioner for unfair attacks when you are called out on your lie is Repug 101.

bigfishlittlepond

justus4..ARE you kidding? You want to sum up President Jimmy Carter, as a good president, just for installing solar panels on the white house?, while he turned a blind eye and wrecked the world's greatest economy and made a nuclear Iran and North Korea possible ? Im suprised in your choice of Jimmy Carter as an example for VIGOR (

PTHS2

"Less dependent" is not applealing to you scholars?

SisterAbdullahX_

justus, Where you aware that the solar panels were removed because it cost more for the maintenance than they were producing, or do you just like the spin?

GACopperhead

The FACTS are that the gas companies refuse to build refineries, which keeps prices high. Check, just this year they have canceled 5 refineries. This is while they make billions in profit. They don't need more land to drill on, they refuse to drill on the millions of acres the are permitted to drill on now. Check the facts. Quit spewing mantra as if it is true.

CH

DrGunby, why don't you tell us all about your training and experience in the oil field. Justus, why don't you tell us about your expertise in petroleum. And GAhd, why don't you check the facts, like the one where Dems in Congress, including the almighty SanFranNan refuse to allow further drilling on fed lands and have blocked construction of refineries. They didn't cancel. Democrats know that if gas prices get lower, just like victory in Iraq, that will lose them elections, which is all they care about. You let your hatred of Republicans blind you to the facts. I admit I'm no expert. Why don't you guys? If the almighty Owbama gets into the WH, and gas prices spike, I'm sure you'll find a way to blame Bush and the Reps again. You've blamed them for everything from global warming to excess flatulence despite the fact that your Democrats have been in control of congress for 2 years now!

GACopperhead - I agree the first thing they need to do is build some refineries if only Congress would let them. On drilling - Just because they have a permit does not mean there is oil there. So how about they spend millions where they don't think there is oil so we can pay for that too as a tax write-off if the area doesn't produce. I'd rather they drill where they know oil exists.

GACopperhead

Don't, Congress isn't stopping them.Lower prices stop them, Supply and demand...lower supply, higher demand= higher prices with minimum expended in research and maximum profits (OBSCENE) going to investors and speculators. Unregulated by the Republican administrations.

GACopperhead

I also would like to find some proof somewhere that there is no oil in the areas that they refuse to drill in.

GACopperhead

This is the best answer I can find. While it does explain some of the answer, it also states that the oil companies are secretive, and I have to wonder why they aren't doing more. I do believe more offshore isn't the do all and end all, and having listened to residents of beaches where off shore drilling takes I believe there are some heavy risks of damage to the environment that need deep consideration before just drilling willy nilly. I don't agree with making a deal with the devil in order to line more pocket that i perceive as being in league with the Republican administrations. It's basic social stratification here....if the poor and middle class(middle class who pays the most out of their USABLE income) continue to be ignored by those in power, a revolt will inevitably occur. That revolt is happening now, in this election, and I, for one hope to see the present administration and those who continue to spout it's misinformation booted from office. Hopefully Arizona will eventually get wise and Boot McCain. Alaska just has no sense. http://www.factcheck.org/askfactcheck/are_the_democrats_correct_in_stati...

GACopperhead

No, Don't the speculators aren't OPEC, they are "investors" who but the oil with no intent on using it, so that when the price for a barrel rises they sell for profit. They are MIDDLE men who are serving no purpose but to raise the price of oil. Unregulated and protected by Repubs.

justthefacts

Amazing. What can you say? I don't know how some people actually function in life.

owensjef2

BY all means please blame Bush.

GACopperhead

Thanks for your permission, not that I needed it, and I will and Cheney and the fools that elected them.

factchecker

What kind of proof do you want Copperhead? For them to drill and go "Oh no oil". Geological studies are not exact science. No one knows for sure until they drill. And because it's not exact they work on probabilities. Would you finance them to drill where they don't think oil exists? If you are going to regulate everything and not let the free market do it's thing then you might as well have a socialist state. Sure we all have to have gas but if it cost way too much then the public will quit consuming as much which drops the carbon in the air and slows down "global warming" (which I personally believe is a natural not man-made occurrance).

factchecker

And see, I was so proud of you the other day GAC. But I see you backslid.

patriciathomas

Had many friends that fell for the solar panel scam. They had money to throw away, luckily. The concept was and is a fun idea, but the technology has not improved enough to make it viable. The giant solar fields will never justify themselves financially. Drilling will solve the oil shortage problem. Not drilling will not.

I don't know about anyone else but I won't be going to DrGunby for any medical procedure anytime soon. Because if he gets his way not only will there be a long line out his office door for those waiting to receive care, but he will probably ask you to bite down on a bullet and take a shot of whiskey to help the pain as he cuts into your flesh with a rusty saw that has not been cleaned and used on the thousand before you. Grow up Gunby and then grow a pair. And if you can't I am sure Mrs. Clinton will let you barrow hers

convertedsoutherner

Just like all the windmills being practical. Can't you just see those windmills in NY and areas that have no wind? Of course, that would be a great idea for the uninformed. The dims turned out the lights and went on vacation per Pelosi, rather than discussing the drilling. Rather than agreeing to more drilling several yrs ago, they now say it will take 10 yrs from now. Look at how we have all these rigs in one area and all that were threatened during Ike. I guess some want us to stay so vulnerable.

factchecker

Of course the Dems want us to stay vulnerable that way we have to run to government (them) to take care of all our needs. They want that power to tell all the rest of us how to live and how they will be our savior and benefactor. Utter Bulls--t!! Dems it is so easy for you to be "compasionate" when it's with OTHER people's money huh?

rbk

Jimmy Carter had good intentions, to bad most of them were wrong! He gave away our interests in the Canal Zone, hurt Israel with pushing them to accept treaties that were unfair to them. I can't even remember all the other things that he promoted that were or would have been bad for our country and the world. Also if the environmentalists had not gotten their way in the past, we would probably already have more refineries on line now.

ZenoElia

A lease to explore by drilling is something that precedes drilling to produce crude or natural gas. The exploration and research that goes into it is extensive and not handled by your average engineer or geologist. These folks have often been in the petroleum engineering field for decades and know their stuff. That said, the company profiteers who make decisions about how to handle discoveries and their subsequent production will only permit for production those wells that have a sustained predicted outflow that meets a minimal dollar figure in profitability. So yeah, there are wells already drilled and not in production because they are predicted not to produce a substantial amount worthy of pursuit of profit. From initial lease to final production of raw product takes usually six months to three years depending on depth and field structures to penetrate and fracture within the desired zone. Drill sites on land produce tons of un-environmentally safe waste by-products that costs to be removed or sometimes buried, ruining land for years. Wildlife and livestock cannot live on it. It can't be farmed. It is poisoned and worthless for a consequential period of time.

realistineducation

do you not understand that this is virgin land and drilling will destroy the wildlife and environment, get a grip dude, drilling their will not produce enough oil to lower the price of gasoline at all. get your facts straight

I worked in the gas and oil fields of TX and OK for about five years after Reagan deregulated the industry allowing for 'boom' periods immediately after he did so. The economy was suffering similarly then and potential roughnecks and roustabouts showed up from all over the world for those few years, driving the economy. I suspect this is the plan again. Shale oil can be produced inland at a profit now as opposed to then since it's refining and production costs exceed refining bulk crude we import from OPEC and its relatives. The problem is that oil barons don't want to spend on what they already have, they want to afford themselves of lease ownership in unexplored areas that have high output predicted from surrounding geological studies. The Natural Arctic Preserve in Alaska is such a place. It's nothing more than competition between oil barons that desires to open up ANWR and is driven by greed and DC lobbyists. Drilling offshore is much more expensive than inland wells being drilled. Pickens has a good short term idea by suggesting natural gas be used as an alternate fuel, providing we can keep that cost lower than today's expense for fuel.

ZenoElia

Keeping our technology current, using the combustible engine powered using fossil fuels, is not the correct approach. So drilling will not resolve the issues nor provide a long-term solution. Why continue in that direction if it is clear we need another solution? We have the minds, the money, and the institutions where progress can be made. My question to everyone is, "Do we have the will to do the right thing?"

rufus

to, too, two- their, there, they're

I4PUTT

Actually oil has dropped to below $95 per barrel. I blame Bush for this. If indeed we are successful in establishing a Democracy in Iraq, we should benefit from having a friend in the oil business. If the Democrats are serious about waging war in Afghanistan, we might be able to have a loyal ally there as well. Then Iran. Iran is begging to be next. How long do any of you think it will be before Iran forces the hand of the world's leaders. Allies don't assure lower prices but may break op the strangle hold of OPEC.

dani

Natural gas as a short term solution? I just read where the prices of natural gas will raise heating bills by 25% this winter. And... My cars doesn't run on natural gas. Can we make that change over night? I didn't think so. Drill, baby, drill. The only sensible way to go until other forms of energy are practical.
