Letter to the Editor
As I begin to write this, it is exactly seven years to the minute since the Islamic terrorist attack of Sept. 11th, 2001, the latest in a succession of attacks that demonstrated once again to the American people that a war, already in progress, had escalated -- and now our country was really involved.
The heartbreaking photo of New York's Twin Towers on the editorial page this Sept. 11 is, to me and surely to many, the best single depiction of the reminder that America was attacked .
Interestingly, the photo was not on Page 1 today (so also, not above the fold). Why is that? Shouldn't this photo be placed at the top of the front page every day until it is all over?
Why are there incessant reminders on TV, radio and in all other media as to the station you are hearing, the channel you are watching, the newspaper you are reading -- reminders before, during and after each program and within each edition? Why does every campaign -- advertising, political, fund-raising -- have its verbal and pictorial slogan, for the duration of the campaign? It is so that we never forget.
But for the most important campaign in which our country is involved, there is no regular photo reminder. There cannot even be a front-page acknowledgement of the 9-11-01 tragedies on the anniversary of that terrible day. We ... are ... at ... WAR, for crying out loud.
And crying out loud is what I feel like doing right now.
